A predestination paradox, also called a causality loop, is a special type of paradox that occurs when a time traveler's exploits in the past are what motivate him or her to travel back in time in the first place.
Examples of predestination paradoxes
Takezo Kensei
Ever since he was a young child, Hiro Nakamura was told stories of the legendary Japanese hero Takezo Kensei and his exploits, who eventually became Hiro's hero. When Hiro travels back in time to feudal Japan, he actually meets his hero, Takezo Kensei. Eventually, Hiro and Kensei become great friends as Hiro teaches the previously deplorable Kensei to use his abilities to become a true hero.
However, Kensei is betrayed when he spies Hiro and Yaeko, the swordsmith's daughter, sharing a kiss. He then discards his path of heroism and allies with the enemy Whitebeard. After their final confrontation in Whitebeard's camp, Hiro offers to teleport Kensei out of the camp to save him from the imminent explosion. Kensei refuses, but swears he will have revenge on Hiro. Just as the tent begins to explode, Hiro teleports out, leaving Kensei behind. He is presumed dead, despite his abilities.
Later, as Hiro prepares to return to the present day, wrought with guilt, Yaeko reassures him that he is the true Takezo Kensei. She tells him that everything she learned about Kensei came from Hiro, and all of the heroic deeds that Kensei performed were in fact performed by Hiro. Yaeko tells him that as long as she has a voice, she will tell the true story of Takezo Kensei. Therefore, Hiro became the legendary Japanese hero by traveling back in time.
Adam Monroe
In addition to helping Takezo Kensei fulfill his destiny as a hero (albeit for a short while), Hiro also set Kensei on a bloodlusting vendetta. Thanks to his abilities, Kensei came to be immortal and lived for over four hundred years. During this time, Kensei's view of the world grew increasingly cynical as the centuries passed, thanks to Hiro stealing his love Yaeko. He came to realize that the world was corrupt and needed to be purged. Eventually, he adopted the name Adam Monroe and helped to found the Company. He saw this company as an outlet for his anger and hate, as well as his desire to cleanse the world.
