History

The Fix

Peter finds Claude on the roof of Charles Deveaux's apartment building, feeding pigeons in a coop. Peter is surprised that Claude keeps pigeons; Claude says he doesn't "keep" anything.

Distractions

Simone and Isaac meet on the roof of Charles Deveaux's apartment building. Simone remarks that her father wondered who fed the pigeons.

Unexpected

Isaac includes Claude's pigeons in a painting. On the rooftop, Peter asks Claude why he cares for pigeons. Claude says that Charles Darwin bred pigeons while working on his theory of evolution.

Five Years Gone

When Hiro and Ando return from the future, a pigeon flies off of the Deveaux rooftop. As the two look out over New York City, the pigeon flies away.

Dual

Hiro asks a pigeon for help while hanging on a pole, but then realizes he is talking to an animal.

Memorable Quotes

"You know, I never figured out how those pigeons got up here. My father always said, 'If they found their way, we ought to let 'em be.'"

- Simone (to Isaac) (Distractions)

"What's this all about anyways?"

"What's what?"

"The birds. I mean, you sort of hate everything, everyone. Except you treat these pigeons like they're family."

"Charles Darwin bred pigeons when he was working out his theory of evolution. Married up various permutations to get maximum potential."

- Peter, Claude (Unexpected)

Notes

• Pigeons are birds that commonly nest in urban areas; they are noted for their ability to return to their nests from great distances. Wild pigeons are widely considered nuisance animals, while domesticated pigeons can be used to carry messages.
• During the commentary for Five Years Gone cast members noted that wild pigeons live in the soundstage where Isaac's loft is.
• Pigeons belongs to the same family as doves. In Heroes, both Claude's pigeons and Ishi's dove live on the top floor of Charles Deveaux's building.
