He got into interactive storytelling when he became a gamemaster for some pen-and-paper role-playing games. Though he went to law school to become a literary agent, his life took a different path, and Tom began working in the entertainment industry with new media. He worked on some of the webisodes for ''[[Superman|Smallville]]'', and wrote the webisode series ''The Lex Files'' for the show. He has also written short stories and articles for [[DC Comics]] and ''Smallville Magazine''.

Tom Inkel was a digital writer for Heroes. Part of his responsibilities as a digital writer was to be the main iStory writer (a responsibility that was taken over by Zach Wilson when Tom left Heroes in the summer of 2009). Tom also wrote for the Linderman Election Hack story found in Heroes Evolutions content during Season One. Later, he helped write communications and puzzles found in the Evs Dropper storyline, and he also wrote some Assignment Tracker 2.0 profiles. Tom was also heavily involved in the creation and management of the Heroes: Survival role-playing game, including writing most or all of the regular messages.
