The following is a list of chapters of the Purpose volume of the iStory, with summaries and appearances noted. The summaries below are for each chapter, and explain what must happen in order for the reader to complete the story successfully.

John Mulligan finds a paper in his pocket. It seems to be written about himself and by an evolved human. It says that his experience could offer them a great deal and though it is risky, it is a risk worth taking. With Samuel's invitation still fresh, John decides to see the carnival. In the carnival, he observes everything, the entrances and the exits and imagines what the Company would do here in old days. John tells Samuel that he belonged to factions before but they were not in the open like time, which also makes them vulnerable to attacks. Samuel implies that they know how to hide and wishes to be able to rewind time long enough, to fix his own mistakes. Samuel goes on telling that John can find redemption in there and that they would accept him as he is. John finds Samuel too persuasive and doubts whether he is one of the people who forces thoughts. John says that he is not providing him with the whole story, that he has something up his sleeve. Samuel denies and says that he needs a purpose. John is convinced but he understands that Samuel is only a very good orator. He asks to be shown around and asks how can he be employed there. While Samuel is listing the possibilities, a carny, Josh, attacks him. He rewinds time and dodges the attack, Josh falls into the mud. Suddenly, Josh's brother, Evan, attacks him, but John easily dodges the attacks too. Samuel intervenes and stops the fight saying that John is their guest. Josh exclaims that he is an agent and is here to take everyone into custody. John denies it and says that the Company was destroyed long ago. As the crowd seeks answers, he goes on telling that he is not taking anyone in. |

| Despite an invitation, Mulligan found himself to be an extremely unwelcome guest at the Carnival - after he was recognized as a former Primatech agent. When things got ugly, Mulligan decided to wash his hands of the whole thing. But then he learned that the love of his life, Gail Bowman was living at the Carnival with her family...
