Image Deletion Policy

  • I think as a policy we should refrain from deleting or tagging for deletion any images. Images are shared between the localized versions of Heroes Wiki so it's not immediately clear whether a given image is still in use or not. Storage space is plentiful, so we don't need to worry about the space images take up. (Admin 23:46, 31 December 2006 (EST))
    • Would it be advisable to create a "Image Parking Lot" page, who's sole purpose is to include an Image to take it out of the Special:Unusedimages list? --Orne 23:53, 31 December 2006 (EST)
      • Hmm... let's see what others think about it. Personally I think that unused images aren't really that big a deal so it doesn't matter if they show up in Special:Unusedimages, but I'm always open to other opinions. (Admin 00:19, 1 January 2007 (EST))
        • It certainly doesn't hurt to have them floating around unused, but it might not hurt to have an Island of Misfit Images that people can check before uploading a new image. Unused images don't bug me, but unnecessarily duplicated ones do, if only because it makes it that much harder to change should a change be needed/wanted.--Hardvice (talk) 00:33, 1 January 2007 (EST)
          • Great points. I wasn't aware that so many pics are used on foreign language sites (thanks for the link, Hardvice). As for tagging images: is there any way to remove Special:Unusedimages from the special pages? If possibe, this would be beneficial for two reasons. 1, images that are used on other sites still show up as not being used. 2, some images show up there that are embedded, but used in a gallery, as a thumbnail, as a sidebar pic, etc. It's a very misleading page. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:25, 1 January 2007 (EST)

Archiving

  • Before archiving talk pages, are you checking the sections to make sure they dont have any recent comments? Just a reminder just in case. :) (Admin 22:04, 2 January 2007 (EST))
    • Yes - thank you for the reminder. The only recent comment is yours on the Sylar page, which I'm working on now. I'll go back and double check in a minute. Thanks! :) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:07, 2 January 2007 (EST)
      • We haven't really discussed archival policy at all yet, so I guess it's a good time to start. My suggestion is that if we're going to archive we archive only entire sections that do not have any new comments since the cut-off date. So for Talk:Sylar for instance my recommendation would be to leave the entire original Brain Eating section until the point where we go to archive it and it's no longer active. Just taking the recent comments could become messy and doesn't preserve the context of the original comment. (Admin 22:12, 2 January 2007 (EST))
        • That's a great point. The previous discussion would useful. I'll go ahead and restore those old comments.

With the exception of the aforementioned comment about Sylar's diet, the other most recent comment was a congratulations on the Main Page from User:DeweyQ on Dec 23. Before that there wasn't really anything since about the 20th, and certainly nothing that wasn't relevant (mostly just talk btwn Hardvice and me on the Category talk:Plot Points page.

You're right - I should have checked with the other admins before archiving. I just thought the long pages could be cleaned up. Sorry if I stepped on any toes - didn't mean to! :) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:22, 2 January 2007 (EST)

          • No toes stepped on. :) If anything I think it's nice you're cleaning up the talk pages. We'll probably have to setup an archive template to standardize the archives soon. Keep them orderly in a nice table... plus probably include a list of the discussions that are contained in each archive to make it easier to find a given archived discussion from the talk page. Timeline Deletion

Check out Category:Articles for Deletion. A few timeline-related articles, and the timeline category have all been nominated for deletion. I for one agree - we should either really beef up the individual date pages, or get rid of them all in favor of the main timeline. Thoughts? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:38, 9 January 2007 (EST)

  • With the exception of perhaps November 8th, I'd say get rid of the individual date pages in favor of a consolidated timeline. (Admin 19:02, 9 January 2007 (EST))

MediaWiki Upgrade

  • I've upgraded Heroes Wiki from MediaWiki 1.7.1 to 1.9.0. Let me know if there are any problems. (Admin 21:27, 12 January 2007 (EST))
    • Okay, I'm clueless. The only difference I see is (+141) and (+36) on the Recent changes page. Is that how many characters you added? Cool. What other differences are there? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:54, 12 January 2007 (EST)
      • Mostly bug fixes and small features. The full release notes are here, though I think there's much more info there than you want. You'll probably just notice some slight differences and improvements here and there. (Admin 21:58, 12 January 2007 (EST))
      • Something of interest: This version says it adds support for redirects to specific sections, so if we need them we can use them now. (Admin 13:28, 13 January 2007 (EST))
        • Cool. I think that was mostly an issue when we were trying to redirect to certain sections of the powers pages, but now that we have individual articles for each ... But cool function! - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:51, 13 January 2007 (EST)
          • Weird. So I used a jump redirect (April 24th jumps to Timeline#April 24th), and the "back" button on my browser reported that I had been to Timeline 6 times. Very odd. So I tried it with another jump redirect: Brooklyn. Same thing. Odd, huh? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:49, 22 January 2007 (EST)
            • Strange. Doesn't happen for me, I just see one instance of Timeline in my back list. This is using Firefox 1.5. (Admin 20:52, 22 January 2007 (EST))
              • Not that it's a big deal or anything - it just surprised me when I tried to go back. And then again. And then... (I'm on Firefox 1.0 - I'm so last year!) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:57, 22 January 2007 (EST)
    • It says that there's an edit count field for each user, but I can't find it. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:49, 13 January 2007 (EST)

Edit Summary Shortcuts

I added some shortcuts we can use for edit summaries to link people to the appropriate help article:

That way, if we make a correction for tense, we can enter an edit summary like "change Help:tense" and the user will have a link to explain why the change was made.--Hardvice (talk) 15:15, 24 January 2007 (EST)

How do you feel about moving the redirects out of the regular namespace and into the Help namespace? Otherwise it seems like we're polluting the Heroes namespace with help information. (Admin 15:31, 24 January 2007 (EST))
That'd work. I was just trying to simplify it a bit, since the whole text of the link shows up in RC.--Hardvice (talk) 16:10, 24 January 2007 (EST)
What a great help that will be - I go crazy trying to remember all the jumps. Thanks! - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:51, 24 January 2007 (EST)

Prophecy Test Pages

Sooo ... The other 3 prophecy test pages that we've made are just ... sitting there. Are we ready to move on a new version, stick with the original, or delete the obsolete ones? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:11, 24 January 2007 (EST)
