Global's Early Broadcasts in Canada

My fellow Canuks and Americanuks;

I receive Global through Cable in Saskatchewan. I get their Global Edmonton broadcasts. During the last two weeks that Global has been broadcasting Heroes one day early, all the listings I have access to have said that it was not broadcast then. Having not been able to see myself because I was away from home and TV during both Sunday and Monday night, I don't know if it is being broadcast here early or not.

I know that it is being broadcast at least somewhere early by Global because I have seen screenshots of content with the Global TV 'bug' (Station ID Icon they put in the corner of the screen) before Mondays broadcast as proof. I was wondering if I was able to catch it a day early or if there are other Global locations that supposedly aren't broadcasting it early.

Yours;

--WolvenSpectre 23:06, 4 March 2007 (EST)

  • It looks like it airs on Global Ontario. Not sure about any of the others. (Admin 23:38, 4 March 2007 (EST))
  • Global Vancouver airs Heroes a day early. Infact, I'm watching it right now this Sunday, March 4th at 9:29 PM (PST). Great episode going on, even halfway through. Anyways, back to subject on hand, it's Global Vancouver and Ontario that's airing Heroes early (that I know of, maybe more affiliates). --Aero Zeppelin 00:31, 5 March 2007 (EST)
    • Looks like Global decided to clear it up on the page with the video stream. It says it is broadcast on Monday in Alberta. That means here in the "Land of Living Skies" too (oh, how I hate that moniker for Saskatchewan).--WolvenSpectre 07:18, 5 March 2007 (EST)

So what that it airs in Canada

When its aired its aired, write the info here. And if the US idiots don't want to be spoiled well don't read it before you've seen it.--IceHero 08:01, 5 March 2007 (EST)

  • The spoiler policy is designed to benefit everyone -- since the US and Canada are supposed to be on the same schedule. We'd do the same thing if it aired Sunday night in New York only, and I'd sure hope we'd do the same thing if it aired on Sunday night in the US but not Canada. It's not a matter of "US idiots" vs. Canadians (particularly since it hasn't even aired all over Canada) ... thanks to P2P, anyone can have seen it already. It's a matter of having a bright line for when spoilers cease to be spoilers. People can't effectively avoid being spoiled except by avoiding the entire site, and that's not fair. If you are just dying to write new articles from the episode, I'd suggest writing them offline in a text editor and uploading them tonight.--Hardvice (talk) 08:34, 5 March 2007 (EST)
  • We'll be having respect for our viewers and users -- the episode will be considered a spoiler until it is widely aired. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:37, 5 March 2007 (EST)
  • This is one of the reasons I thought that maybe it would have been better to have the posts for episodes that air early up here then bring them across after the airing. They are already marked as spoilers. Then in retrospect, I thought about the points the admins made, and took into consideration that this means that they would have to have a spoilers version of every article and section in case someone wanted to alter them. Then they would have to lock down the originals, make a whole new set of reference links, then after one day copy them to the main articles. Thats allot of work for just one day.

That doesn't take into account that for that day people could not alter the main documents with non-spoiler material without going into the spoilers section defeating the whole purpose of the section. This doesn't include people who have direct bookmarks that go to the webpages of the main articles.

I know many of us Canadian Fans are getting the 2cd and 3rd class treatment, but I have found this community to be more than accepting of us so I think we can put up with a little inconvenience. You wouldn't like it if somebody spoiled the best parts of an episode you had to watch on tape, so give them that same respect and then we can all do the "ooh ooh ooh did you see when he...(censored "Parasite" Scene that you HAVE to talk about at 10pm)".--WolvenSpectre 13:54, 5 March 2007 (EST)

    • Well said. I would also add, as I stated above, that I hope we would do things the same way if part of the U.S. decided to air things a day earlier. As I see it, it's not a U.S. vs. Canada issue at all ... it's a spoiler vs. non-spoiler issue.--Hardvice (talk) 13:57, 5 March 2007 (EST)
      • It wasn't done when Run! was broadcast almost a week late in Utah. ;)
        • Actually I didn't mind cause I got to see what I missed, and I read spoilers anyway. -Level 14:07, 5 March 2007 (EST)
          • if its a spoiler till most people see it, when exactly does heroes air in china or india? shouldn't it remain a spoiler till these two billion people have had the opportunity to see it JD 00:52, 6 March 2007 (EST)
            • It doesn't air concurrently in the U.S. and China. It does (or is supposed to) air concurrently in the U.S. and Canada. You're comparing apples to pomegranates. Don't be obtuse.--Hardvice (talk) 00:57, 6 March 2007 (EST)
            • I think we're getting a little petty here. You get the gist of what the admins of this site are saying, so try to refrain from being immature. Point being is that the show is filmed in the US, distributed by a US television company. Its designated audience is in the majority American, so it's only fair to assume that North America is what is to be assumed for when something is a spoiler or not. British television rarely makes it to the states, you don't hear me going on any sites like this for Dr. Who. Again, it's a matter of practicality and who the target audience is for the show and this site.--Baldbobbo 00:58, 6 March 2007 (EST)
            • I'll leave the pointing out the irony and problems with the above statement, and that previous discussions with Admin we discussed the voluntary self regulation that happens for one day, and if it doesn't work the Admins will probably just lock down the wiki for a day, which I think would be bad for the community and HeroesWiki.

Admin also stated, and I assume the offer still stands, he offered to help set up a wiki for those fans in locations who are getting the show late. Also I think the community would probably not mind trading posting information after they are no longer spoilers for that new location. Think CSI and CSI:Miami only more like HeroesWiki:Japan.--WolvenSpectre 07:45, 6 March 2007 (EST)

    • On another note... Australia is still MANY episodes behind us...--Riddler 01:03, 6 March 2007 (EST)
      • According to what I have read and scene, Australia's broadcast companies are the ones that keep it that way. They wait purposefully for content price reductions and charge such inflated ad space on shows for how old they are it could be cheaper for the show distributors to press DVDs, selling their own ads, and mass mail them so long as the show is in positive ratings.--WolvenSpectre 07:51, 6 March 2007 (EST)

Season One DvD

Anybody know anything about when the season one dvd is gonna be released? Benoni 02:49, 24 March 2007 (EDT)

  • No confirmation on any release date yet (the season hasn't wrapped yet, remember) ... but you can read this to get excited about all the extras. :) — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:49, 24 March 2007 (EDT)
  • Jesse Alexander also talked about it at Wizard World, including revealing that the DVDs will have exclusive scenes showing what happens to some of the characters after the season ends.--Hardvice (talk) 14:59, 24 March 2007 (EDT)
    • When it comes out, should there be an article about it? Heroe(talk) 15:01, 24 March 2007 (EDT)
      • We'll need to decide that after it comes out. It may be easier to just add info to individual character pages. It depends on the scenes, really.--Hardvice (talk) 15:04, 24 March 2007 (EDT)
        • I realize the season hasn't ended yet. I just figured they would release the DvDs asap, cuz of how popular the show is. So I thought maybe someone might have heard something about it. Of the extras I've read about I'm looking most forward to the uncut 72min pilot. Benoni 23:42, 24 March 2007 (EDT)
          • I'm looking forward to the 72min pilot too! I read that the DVD will have things that will satisfy the fans. Citizen

New .07% Trailer

Hi - please does anybody know if the trailer is still on? looks like the link is broken. Thanks. Stellatomailing 11:50, 12 April 2007 (EDT)

Here it is. Somebody tweaked a bit the original version from MS. Stellatomailing 15:19, 12 April 2007 (EDT)

Weird formatting?

Sometimes when I refresh the page, the language bar and everything south of it stretches the full screen width, and sometimes it's only about 60% wide. Is anybody else seeing this?--Hardvice (talk) 18:37, 16 April 2007 (EDT)

  • Yeah, when I just forced a refresh it and everything below it was only halfway across. (Admin 18:40, 16 April 2007 (EDT))
    • Ok, made some changes and it seems to be loading ok for me now. You can check the diff, but essentially I just removed a lot of the table code that was added with the new language bar as a result of copying code from the linkbar. (Admin 20:18, 16 April 2007 (EDT))

Other other Heroes Wiki.

I found another lame excuse of a Heroes Wiki on the interweb, at heroes.wikia.com/wiki/Heroes_Wiki . (Note: I didn't want to link to it, because it will help it rank high in the search engines.) ---- 16:00, 20 April 2007 (EDT)

  • It's been around for a while but has never been very impressive. At some point in the past I remember there was a link to our wiki in their links section, but they got so little traffic that I hardly ever saw traffic coming from their site. Just like NBC's wiki I doubt much will come of it; we're pretty well established. (Admin 16:06, 20 April 2007 (EDT))
    • I just pimped us out over there. :P Heroe!(talk) 19:15, 20 April 2007 (EDT)
      • That was you that vandalized their pages and deleted some of their content? That wasn't a responsible thing to do. You should revert those changes. (Admin 19:18, 20 April 2007 (EDT))
        • Darnit, now I feel guilty. :(. Older people ruin all the fun. Heroe!(talk) 19:28, 20 April 2007 (EDT)
          • Yeah, that really wasn't very nice or respectful. I sure hope you enjoyed yourself because I don't really see how that was "fun". (And yes, I'm an "older person", too--if showing respect means ruining all the fun, then I'm proud to be a killjoy.) I've actually been very impressed with the majority of our users here at Heroes Wiki; we generally treat each other with respect, understanding, and patience. Other wiki sites have users who can get very rude to each other, and we don't have too much of that. I just really hope immature vandalism to other sites doesn't reflect badly on our site. Ugh. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:31, 20 April 2007 (EDT)

"Page Type" buttons

  • Actually, they've got a really great idea, if you ask me. When you add a new page, they provide a buttons with choices for what type of page it is (character, episode, actor, etc.) Clicking the button drops in a blank page in the needed format--it has all the necessary templates and section headings. It's basically the same as subst:-ing, but it removes a step and is a heckuva lot more user-friendly. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:47, 20 April 2007 (EDT)
    • We could do that here, too, if we want. Would just take a quick edit to MediaWiki:Newarticletext. The mechanism just uses the preload variable in the request string to populate the edit box with a Template. (e.g. http://heroeswiki.com/index.php?title=SomePage&action=edit&preload=Template:welcome) (Admin 20:57, 20 April 2007 (EDT))
      • Obviously, I'm all for it. I think it's a great idea. Basically, we already have the pages in place to be dropped in (with some tweaks). I think it would help a lot of misformatting, or using templates that are missing variables (when people just copy a similar article, though it might be a bit old). It would even help with things like standard capitalization in headings--even though every character page has "Character History", when people write new articles they (myself included) sometimes write "Character history"--a small mistake, but one that would be fixed using those buttons. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:06, 20 April 2007 (EDT)
        • Go for it then. :) All administrators can edit the "articles" in MediaWiki namespace. (Admin 21:08, 20 April 2007 (EDT))
          • Standardization and automation are good things....gives us more time to research theories, powers, and super-geeked crossword puzzles! --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 04/20/2007 21:30 (EST)
            • I think that's a good move to add thoose buttons. But why do we only have PLACE and CHARACTERS ? What about other type of pages ? And I know it's meaningless but I don't like how thoose buttons look, they are too big and too... ugly ? :p Can't we edit them to make them smaller and fit the actual graphic template ? -- FrenchFlo (talk)        08:22, 21 April 2007 (EDT)
              • I only added two so we could get an idea of what they would look like--I didn't want to go ahead and add 15 or 20 buttons if the community decides to not use them. I'm not sure what you mean about fitting into a graphic template, but yes, I can shrink them really easily. I'll go ahead and do that and you can tell me if they look better. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:09, 21 April 2007 (EDT)
                • Okay, I added two more buttons just to get an idea of how it would look, although the buttons don't do anything (I'll do that later). I also made the buttons a bit smaller, but I fear that they're smaller than other buttons (Save page, for instance). I also tweaked the colors a bit. Whaddya think? — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:18, 21 April 2007 (EDT)
    • My only concern is that some people who join this site only do it to edit existing pages and just add small content (ie a link to the fan link page). If it became super easy to add something like a fan page, my only fear is that new users would be more inclined to just making an article with very little content that would probably get deleted a week later. But I doubt it would be a large enough problem to not be helpful to others.--Bob 08:53, 21 April 2007 (EDT)
      • It does make it a lot easier to add a page, and that's kind of a double-edged sword, isn't it? Sure, it makes it easier for us to do what we need, but it also invites more vandals, I suppose. What I would suggest in that we see how it plays out--we really haven't had too many problems with vandalism on this site, or even with needless articles. If we see a surge in articles with pointless content, we could always get rid of the buttons of course. Would that help? — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:18, 21 April 2007 (EDT)
        • You might want to add "noeditsection" to it. ---- 11:35, 23 April 2007 (EDT)
          • I'm not sure what you mean--MediaWiki:Newarticletext can only be edited by sysops. The templates for the buttons (template:Newpage character, for instance) is an included-only page, so there's no editing to be done. Where exactly would you add a noeditsection? — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 12:07, 23 April 2007 (EDT)
            • My concern is that the page type buttons will lead to lower-quality articles. I think something about the setup will causes people to sorta rush through it. Heroe!(talk) 16:32, 24 April 2007 (EDT)
              • So far, they seem to be leading to better (or at least more consistent) articles. I love them. I want a link for welcoming new users now.--Hardvice (talk) 17:10, 24 April 2007 (EDT)
                • I really like the new buttons and think they're working out well. I agree Hardvice, I have seen more consistent articles, which is nice. In fact, I feel like before, there were a lot of articles that basically had an infobox and a stub tag--maybe a description if we were lucky. Again, if there is a rise in crap articles (which is always something to look out for anyway), we can take the buttons down. Oh, and the new user button: genius! — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:23, 26 April 2007 (EDT)
                  • Thanks! We can do the same context-sensitive buttons for others with their own namespace or pseudonamespace (episodes, graphic novels, Heroes Interactive, etc.) if we want. Now if only we could have Clippy pop up and say "It looks like you're writing an article about a graphic novel"...--Hardvice (talk) 00:28, 26 April 2007 (EDT)

Woah, what happened?

We went from 1,012 articles to 985? How'd that happen? Heroe!(talk) 12:23, 21 April 2007 (EDT)

  • Hmm... I moved the Episodes into their own namespace. That may have had something to do with it. I'll look into it, thanks for the heads up! (Admin 12:25, 21 April 2007 (EDT))
    • Yep, it wasn't counting articles in the new Episode namespace. I've configured it to count them now and we're back up there now. (Admin 12:39, 21 April 2007 (EDT))
      • But now it says 1,021. Heroe!(talk) 12:41, 21 April 2007 (EDT)
        • It's always possible the count has been a little off for a while. I just ran a script to refresh the statistics, so they should be accurate now, even if it's different from before. (Admin 12:47, 21 April 2007 (EDT))

Graphic Novels Section

In the previous weeks, when Heroes was on hiatus, the graphic novel War Buddies was the feature article. Since it's going to be at least four more weeks before novels become feature again, can we add a small section on the main page for the current novel? Maybe just add a small thumbnail for the current graphic novel that links to the appropriate article?--MiamiVolts 14:28, 25 April 2007 (EDT)

  • Personally I wouldn't mind that. When I was new to the site and the show, I didn't know there were graphic novels at all. (I know, I know, I'm so ignorant!) Yes, it's already on the Main Page (template:index) and even featured prominently there (template:portalnav), but I don't think it would hurt to have a little section for the newest GN. My only concern is I'm not sure exactly how to word it or make it look. I mean, I guess I could see another little box under the DYK section, maybe an even shorter version of the AOTW? I don't know, I'd have to see how it looks before I can give a good opinion. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:29, 25 April 2007 (EDT)
  • Now that the Graphic Novels are announced to be year-round, I can definitely see us transitioning from an "Article of the Week" to a "Current Episode" and "Current Graphic Novel". There are some space concerns (there's really only so much more we can trim before they become no better than mere links), but I'm sure we can figure something out.--Hardvice (talk) 15:46, 25 April 2007 (EDT)
    • Personally, I liked how it was handled during the hiatus. I think that during the "off-season", having "Current Episode" is kind of mute, whereas an article of the week suggests something important is occurring. So, I think in a given week, you post the episode, unless there is no episode, then the latest Graphic Novel. Should the horrible situation occur where there's no GN following an episode, then keeping the episode would be fine. I just don't see the need for two during a very long break. Having said that, I think it's important to show that there was a recent GN after an episode has aired. Perhaps at the bottom of the AOTW put a small section linking to the most recent GN?--Bob 00:34, 26 April 2007 (EDT)
    • If the "Watch Online" section was changed or moved (maybe to the info box?), it could fit. Paste {{User:Level/Aotw}} in the main page to test. -Lөvөl 02:34, 26 April 2007 (EDT)
      • I tried it (see it here), but it seems way too big if we include both in full (even sans view online). I'm thinking a very trimmed down version of the graphic novel is a better way to go (basically trimmed down to navbar-size), or a less trimmed down version of both the current episode and the current graphic novel.--Hardvice (talk) 04:15, 26 April 2007 (EDT)
        • Agree, it was a bit too bloated. I think the graphic novel mention should be the picture, a link, and (at most) the short NBC blurb. Keeping it very simple is the way to go. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:35, 26 April 2007 (EDT)
          • I think I have a high resolution at home. The current Aotw is too big to add anything. Maybe it would work if the section headings were removed and the watch now link moved, the monologue is also kind of big. -Lөvөl 11:29, 26 April 2007 (EDT)
            • So I made a sample Aotw Graphic novel entry. My idea is to add it above the "News" section on the main page. Here it is:

User:MiamiVolts/Graphic Novel mainbar Feel free to customize it if you want.--MiamiVolts 22:33, 26 April 2007 (EDT)

  • Very nice. Heroe!(talk) 22:34, 26 April 2007 (EDT)
  • I like what you've done, MiamiVolts. Two things I would change before I would include it on the Main Page: first, I would make the title more centered. It's not centered across the entire top, just across the cell that doesn't have the edit button. (If the edit link proves to be a problem, it could be moved to the bottom left corner, or could simply be moved off this template and onto a header that says "Graphic Novel" (or whatever) on the Main Page.) And second, there is a lot of whitebluespace under the issue number and date. I don't have a concrete solution, but I do think it should be filled in with something--maybe artist info, maybe the short NBC one-line description, maybe the character who narrates? Just a few things to think about. :) — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:53, 27 April 2007 (EDT)
    • I think I'll make three versions, then. First, add some info and leave this version as it is. It's kind of a mix between the news-type white boxes and the info box used for the episode aotw's. Next, I'm going to remove make a new version of this and remove the edit link so the title centers properly (there's no edit link in the other info boxes anyways). Finally, I'm going to alter it for version 3 such that it has a white background and is very similar to the news-type boxes. I'm guessing version 3 is what we want now, but I'll make all 3 for future reference.--MiamiVolts 13:50, 27 April 2007 (EDT)
      • Samples versions 2 and 3 below:

Version 2:

User:MiamiVolts/Graphic Novel mainbar

Version 3:

User:MiamiVolts/Graphic Novel mainbar

Ok, now the admin can pick and choose some more. :)--MiamiVolts 18:53, 27 April 2007 (EDT)

  • Well, it's not just up to us admins, it's really up to the community. Personally, I like the bottom one with the white. I feel it's easiest to read and would look best on the page. Thanks for all your work on that, MiamiVolts! — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:05, 27 April 2007 (EDT)
    • I like the top one. It would fit in best with our current templates. The one thing I would change is the link. I would make it to the article, not the PDF. Heroe!(talk) 23:37, 27 April 2007 (EDT)
      • The title links to the pdf on the main GN page too, so I wouldn't change that. But we could put something like (pdf | article) after the title to make it more obvious. As for which template, I like version 3 as it would fill the gap in the right column and it matches the other right column entries.--MiamiVolts 00:11, 28 April 2007 (EDT)
