Joe Kelly interview
- Joe Kelly very graciously agreed to answer some questions for us. He's just going to check with NBC to make sure he's allowed to say what he wants. I'd like to send the questions off by the end of the week, so we'll need to move on some questions. Post your questions below and I'll pick out the best ones. Thanks! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:02, 25 June 2007 (EDT)
- I'm sending off questions tomorrow so make sure any questions you have for Joe are submitted within the next 12 or so hours. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:48, 26 June 2007 (EDT)
- Questions have been sent. Thanks for all the submissions, everybody! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:42, 27 June 2007 (EDT)
Interview questions
I've already asked Joe what he would name Guillame's power. (See here for his response.) I don't mind offshoot questions about that, but I won't ask him the same question again directly. Everything else is fair game. Okay, ask away. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:06, 25 June 2007 (EDT)
- In reply to Joe's answer, I would ask flat-out if Guillame's power could be thought of as manipulating people's hormones. (ie. drug = hormone?)--MiamiVolts (talk) 03:50, 26 June 2007 (EDT)
- How much creative control does NBC give you? --Hero!(talk)(contribs) 17:04, 25 June 2007 (EDT)
- What's the novel writing process like? Do you have to coordinate with the other writers to ensure all the information remains consistent between the episodes and the graphic novels? Do you write the script yourself or is it a collaborative process from the start? (Admin 17:13, 25 June 2007 (EDT))
- Is Betty's last name Pricher?--MiamiVolts (talk) 12:49, 26 June 2007 (EDT)
- Joe Kelly didn't write Betty, Part 1--Joe Casey did. I'm not sure Joe Kelly even knows who Betty is. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:00, 26 June 2007 (EDT)
- Well, if there's no other questions I don't think it would hurt to ask.--MiamiVolts (talk) 13:04, 26 June 2007 (EDT)

- JK Question 1....Is the name of The Haitian 'Boy', since Guillame refers to him by that title 6 times in the series, and never by a specific name? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 06/26/2007 17:35 (EST)
- JK Question 2....Since you show The Haitian manifesting his power over a large group, and considerable range, would you have any insight on why in (Hiros)), The Haitian wasn't able to block Nathan's flight power from a closer ranger, nor block Peter's powers on the roof in (Unexpected) at a similar close range. Both of those ranges appear closer in distance than the crowd The Haitian controls in the novel series. --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 06/26/2007 17:35 (EST)
- What were your deadlines for the script? When did you have to get the scripts to the artists?
- What was it like working with three different artists for one story Michael Gaydos, Staz Johnson, and Tom Grummett)?
- How much did you already know about Voodoo, and how much research did you have to do on the subject? Where did you find your research?
- What changes were made to your scripts? What notes were you given that were particularly enlightening?
- Is there anything about the Haitian's story that you wish you could have put in the series but weren't able to for some reason?
- What year is It Takes a Village set?
- What inspired the story about the serpent and the crane? I've seen some references to it in martial arts, but I couldn't find anything about it from Voodoo or Haitian traditions. Was it your own creation?
- Who are Samara and Delun?
Follow Up
I'm going to ask Joe to elaborate on his "darker ending" if he can. Are there any other follow up questions you guys want me to ask? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:46, 29 June 2007 (EDT)
- If you had to name Guillame's ability, what would you call it? :) --Hero!(talk)(contribs) 18:48, 29 June 2007 (EDT)
- When I used to interview webcomic creators (such as Tim Buckley of Ctrl+Alt+Del), I always had one strange question in the middle to break the tension. So my question is this: "What is your favourite sandwich topping?" --DocM 18:53, 29 June 2007 (EDT)
- I didn't see my question about whether drugs, in regards to Guillame's power, could be taken to mean hormones, so please ask it. If you did ask it and Joe omitted it, please let us know.--MiamiVolts (talk) 19:59, 29 June 2007 (EDT)
- I've already asked him about the power name and he already responded--he said nobody in the village would have given it a name. I don't feel comfortable asking him too much more about it because I don't want to seem like I'm hounding him for something about which he said he's already given his view. I will ask him where he came up with the term "bliss and horror" though. (By the way, I like the sandwich topping question--I'll have to use that next time I interview somebody!) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:33, 29 June 2007 (EDT)
- Thanks for letting us know you don't want to ask about it again. A different question you might ask is DOB and birthplace.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:53, 30 June 2007 (EDT)
- Actually, when I wrote him back, I worded it in a way that I felt comfortable with. He hasn't written me back so I don't have the exact wording, but it was something along the lines of "A lot of people at the site are interested to know the exact mechanics of Guillame's power. I liked the "walking drug" metaphor. Is there any more insights you can give us?"... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 02:15, 30 June 2007 (EDT)

- How about along with asking Joe about what to call the power, simply print-off the lists of names for it we have come up with, and ask him if any of those are most accurate, and if not, what would he suggest we at the Wiki call it? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 07/2/2007 14:21 (EST)
- It's not about which one of our fan-created names he thinks fits the best, it's just about what the writer had to say that expounded on the story. I've asked him pretty directly about the power--twice. He was gracious enough to give us some really great insights. I personally don't feel comfortable asking him a third time. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:58, 2 July 2007 (EDT)
- Too right. We need to be careful that we treat the Heroes staffers who've been kind enough to talk with us with respect and remember that they're enriching our understanding of the world of Heroes. If we can occasionally glean something from them which makes our job easier, all the better, but they aren't a resource we can stripmine to answer nagging questions which ultimately have more to do with this Wiki than the story. The only reason the name of Guillaume's power is important is because we have to call it something so the article can have a title and be linked to; as Joe's indicated, in Guillaume's world, the power doesn't have a name and nobody really knows (or cares) exactly how it works. We can't ask the Heroes guys to do our job for us (or to referee our arguments for us).--Hardvice (talk) 15:34, 2 July 2007 (EDT)
- I concur. Unless Joe voluntarily chimes in again we should let him be for now.--MiamiVolts (talk) 15:59, 2 July 2007 (EDT)
