The activatingevolution.org stuff

  • Sorry about the activatingevolution.org stuff. I was a bit overzealous there, I suppose. (Walters 09:43, 7 March 2007 (EST))
    • Hey, no problem! :) The site is a little disappointing, they could have done much more good with that site, but including a practically unmaintained wiki is a bad idea and they're just letting it flood the Heroes universe with inaccurate and incorrect information. (Admin 09:50, 7 March 2007 (EST))

Heroeswiki in Portuguese

  • Hey Admin, how are you? I'm Scaico, a great fan of Heroes here from Brazil and i'm wondering if is it possible to get a PT version of the Wiki. I already got some friend who are willing to help with the translations of the articles already created and the creation of new articles. You can catch me on MSN at: scaico@gmail.com . Thanx and Hugz, (Scaico 13:39, 9 March 2007 (EST))
    • Thanks for that. My fault I didn't checked it first. I noticed you have no Portuguese-Speaker burocrats yet. Any idea about when you're gonna get some? What are the requirements? Hugz, (Scaico 13:51, 9 March 2007 (EST))
      • Once the Portuguese site has more activity and needs an admin, I'll set someone up as one there. There's not a whole lot that really requires a dedicated administrator while the site is small, but as it gets larger it helps. Generally I'm looking for someone who's a reliable contributor, comfortable working with MediaWiki, and also understands English well so that all admins across the different language wikis can communicate with each other easily. In the meantime if anything needs administrative attention over there, feel free to let me know. :) (Admin 14:02, 9 March 2007 (EST))
        • THanks for the info. I'm working on the wiki right now, creating some pre-definitions for translating articles. I've been SysOp of LostPedia PT for about 7 months and was willing to make a PT version of HeroesPedia. I'll help as much as I can, with my friend Jean Goés. I'll be sure to contact you if i need anything that i can't do. Thanx for your time, buddy.
          • Oh, excellent. So you have plenty of experience. I'll definitely keep you in mind when setting up an admin for that site then. (Admin 14:24, 9 March 2007 (EST))

Suggested mediawiki plug in

Hey Admin.. I noticed you've got the parserfunctions and stringfunctions mediawiki extensions intalled. Perhaps you might consider using Winter (short for Wiki Interpreter), which is useful for producing more complex logic than the string and parser functions allow. I wrote the extension so i'm very familiar with writing WinterScripts and also I could add Heroes Wiki-specific improvements if needed. Anyways just a though :) --Frantik (Talk) 19:11, 9 March 2007 (EST)

  • Thanks, Frantik, I'll check it out. It saw it supports for loops which is something I've thought would be useful for a while. (Admin 22:22, 9 March 2007 (EST))
    • Yeah.. loops would be cool especially for the minor character pages.. adding a new character and reformatting 4 pages of tables is no fun :( hehe. Plus I was thinking the random number generator would be useful for the new "did you know" box. --Frantik (Talk) 01:40, 10 March 2007 (EST)

An Area for Descriptions & Links to Heroes Fanvids

  • Hi Admin(s), I have seen several creative and very humorous Heroes fanvids on the net, but I've noticed that there is no place on this wiki that lists & describes the videos. For instance, there is a fanvid of a Mohinder video montage with the Jem theme song, "Them", which is very funny. I want to start a wiki page dedicated to cataloguing such Heroes fanvids. Where in our wiki is the best place to do that, and how would I create a portal icon for it? Thanks!. (AlexDo 15:41, 13 March 2007 (EDT))
    • I would suggest just creating an article named "fan videos" and adding links and descriptions to it and see how the community accepts it and where it grows from there. :) (Admin 18:00, 16 March 2007 (EDT))

Two questions? okay

  • 'ello Mr. Admin. i was just wondering when the site was started and what made you want get it going? by the by its the awesomest place on the web.
    • Actually, that's two questions. :) I started the site on October 11, 2006. I had seen a few episodes of Heroes and realized how amazing the show was going to be. I was inspired by wikis like Lostpedia and Memory Alpha and knew that Heroes would really benefit from its own wiki. I did some quick looking around and there weren't really any other wikis dedicated to Heroes, so I set this one up. The site grew slowly at first, but with the help of some excellent contributors and some advertising, the site really started to take off. I'm still thrilled everytime I see fan sites and blogs that link to us when talking about an episode or a character for instance. If this site's amazing it's because of the hard work by everyone who's contributed. (Admin 23:19, 13 March 2007 (EDT))

Linkage to Got-Heroes.com

  • Hey there, I sent you an e-mail also, but have added you to http://www.Got-Heroes.com and was wondering if I could be added on the main page? (Erratikmind 01:43, 18 March 2007 (EDT))
  • Still wondering.(Erratikmind 21:52, 20 March 2007 (EDT))

MSN

Hey Admin, do you have a MSN account? -User:Citizen

  • I have one, but it's only used for work. If you're going to ask me if it was flakey today, yes, a number of us had problems with it. :) (Admin 17:57, 16 March 2007 (EDT))

New Category

I want to make an "Images for Deletion" category. Is it alright if I go ahead and do that? Heroe 22:06, 19 March 2007 (EDT)

  • You don't need permission, but it's good you're discussing it first to get feedback. :) Is there a compelling reason to separate images from other articles? There's already a Category:Articles for Deletion for instance. To me there's not much difference between an article and an image and it's convenient to have a single category that can be checked when looking for articles (or images) that have been nominated. Did you have something in particular in mind? (Admin 22:12, 19 March 2007 (EDT))
    • Personally, I think it would be neater if we separate images and articles for deletion. Heroe 22:35, 19 March 2007 (EDT)
      • Right now, the afd template changes to say "image" if it's on an image, and says "article" if it's on an article. When I'm perusing stuff for deletion, it's nice to have everything (images and articles) in one place. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:39, 19 March 2007 (EDT)
      • Maybe it could be a sub-category? Heroe 22:45, 19 March 2007 (EDT)
        • If it were a subcat, that would make it easier than if it were its own category, but it would still require going to two pages. As it is now, the page separates the articles from the images. I personally think that's sufficient. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:04, 19 March 2007 (EDT)

Admin

  • Do you recruit frequent contributors to be admins like Lostpedia? (Citizen 20:48, 20 March 2007 (EDT))
    • You know, I've been wondering that too... Heroe(talk) 22:01, 21 March 2007 (EDT)
      • From time to time when it looks like we need an additional admin the other existing admins and I discuss it and pick a consistent editor and ask them if they're interested in becomming an admin. It doesn't take a huge admin staff to run the wiki, so the number of admins grows slowly... but as the site continues to grow, and it is indeed growing steadily, the number of admins will increase. Simply stated, "Don't call us, we'll call you."  ;) (Admin 22:06, 21 March 2007 (EDT))
      • I can't speak for anybody else, but for me, when it comes time to discuss new admins, I think a lot less about frequency of contributions and a lot more about quality of contributions. I think more about things like whether or not somebody writes helpful edit summaries, whether or not they participate constructively in talk page discussions, whether or not they use message templates like stub, afd, noimage, and the like consistently, and most of all whether their edits consistently leave articles in better shape than they were before. As an admin, I probably spend more time cleaning up content for consistency, style, speculation, and the like than writing new content, so from my point of view writing a ton of content is less important than writing consistently good content. Unless you're willing to spend a good deal of time worrying about whether something should be a comma or a semicolon or whether item X should go before or after item Y in an infobox, it's probably not the job for you: it's mostly small, nitpicky details. Having a thick skin and the right attitude for working constructively with new, less experienced editors is also a plus.--Hardvice (talk) 06:12, 24 March 2007 (EDT)
        • Well said, Hardvice. In addition, I think it's also important for an admin to generally have patience and kindness. Across this site, we don't have too much of a problem with people being rude to each other, but every once in awhile, some people make comments that are a bit short, or that show a lack of sympathy and even intolerance of other members' (especially new members') learning curves. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:23, 24 March 2007 (EDT)

Finding Copy/Pasted Articles

Here a site I use as a web designer to check content to see if it was copy/pasted from another site. I thought you might find it useful. Copyscape --Xmuskrat 14:53, 26 March 2007 (EDT)

  • Thank you, Xmuskrat. :) (Admin 21:56, 26 March 2007 (EDT))

Oh crap

I lost all the content for Talk:The Symbol and now it's just blank. I'm a moron. :( Heroe(talk)

  • Oh thank goodness, you reverted it! :) Heroe(talk) 22:07, 27 March 2007 (EDT)
    • Piece of cake! :) (Admin 22:09, 27 March 2007 (EDT))
      • Can I go ahead and make that archive again, only being careful not to lose it? Heroe(talk) 22:11, 27 March 2007 (EDT)
        • Sure. Just see pages like Talk:Powers for an example of how to archive if you haven't done it before. :) (Admin 22:14, 27 March 2007 (EDT))

CSS?

  • Is it possible to incorporate CSS into pages on a wiki? Anomy 10:42, 28 March 2007 (EDT)
    • Yes, admins can add new CSS elements if there's something in particular you're interested in. (Admin 16:25, 1 April 2007 (EDT))

Ice Vision

IceVision has gone to far. First he posted the theory "HRG stands for Horny Rhino Genitals", and now he's created pages for "Emo" (which only says "Peter") and "Blue", which only says "Blue is a color". Can we please do something about him? Heroe(talk) 13:09, 31 March 2007 (EDT)

  • I deleted those two pages since there's no need for them. Some of Ice Vision's contributions are a bit silly, but others seem worthwhile. For now let's just deal with them on a case by case basis. Just revert any inappropriate contributions (like the HRG one) for now. If things worsen then we'll take sterner action. Thanks for the heads-up, Heroe. (Admin 13:18, 31 March 2007 (EDT))
    • hu mm ... Sry don't know how to use internal link for the diff page-- FrenchFlo (talk)        17:41, 2 April 2007 (EDT)
      • The internal link for a diff page is doable, but not very easy. It's much easier to use the external link. And this is a much better one (though I think only sysops can view it). As for Ice Vision, I think he's being really silly, and quite childish, but I believe he's also just trying to get a reaction out of everybody. I would just ignore or quietly make corrections. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:17, 2 April 2007 (EDT)

Dates

  • Found an extension that will allow us to format dates per user prefs without creating a ton of red links: FormatDates.
  • As for the dates that are links, evidently we need to turn on the date formatting feature to get 'em to work.--Hardvice (talk) 01:46, 1 April 2007 (EDT)
    • Is this an offshoot of a conversation already on a Talk page somewhere? If not then could you explain the problem that would be solved by these? :) (Admin 10:58, 1 April 2007 (EDT))
      • Most of it's on Talk:Timeline, but the problem is tat we have different date formats used throughout the site. Most of the actors are military-style (5 October 1962). Most of the articles are American-style (October 5, 1962). A handful of articles are randomly one, the other, or something else. In particular, it's making links to the Timeline difficult, but it would also be nice to support the user pref for date formats so we don't have to just mandate a format.--Hardvice (talk) 12:51, 1 April 2007 (EDT)
      • Hey Admin. Just wondering if you've had a chance to look into either of these yet. We're getting set to split the timeline article up and it would help to know the best way to handle date links. I'm pretty sure we don't need either of these to do it, but if we're going to use them eventually, it might change how we link dates to the timeline articles.--Hardvice (talk) 16:25, 20 April 2007 (EDT)
        • The grammar on date formatting feature isn't very good, so maybe I'm misunderstanding, but it sounds like if someone creates a link with a date in one format it's going to automatically change the resulting link into a different format based on the user's preferences? Something about that seems like it would cause confusion and doesn't rub me the right way. Would this approach be better than just standardizing date formats across the wiki or just on the Timeline? (Admin 21:15, 20 April 2007 (EDT))

Interwiki links

I noticed that Lostpedia now has interwiki links, but we don't. Is it worth it? I don't see the benefit for me personally since I don't post on too many other wikis. But maybe others feel differently. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:34, 4 April 2007 (EDT)

  • The advantage of interwiki links is the ability to add links to other sites/wikis more easily. I generally don't configure many of them because when linking to an external site I usually like the link to appear as an external link like it does normally so people know the link isn't to Heroes Wiki content. With some sites like Lostpedia and Wikipedia I make an exception since they're large, recognized bodies of related content, so it's convenient to be able to just use an interwiki link. I don't see it being a feature we'll use too often except for handling the automatic links to the localized versions of Heroes Wiki. (Admin 13:57, 4 April 2007 (EDT))

Linderman & www.heroesforum.co.uk

Hi I'm the Moderator at www.heroesforum.co.uk, and we were wondering if you would be able to sponsor/advertise our site in someway?

Also we have some dirt on Linderman, it's yours if you want it, however the information is from one of the Heroes sneak peaks, for episode 19 so will contain spoilers * Linderman is seen talking to Nathan Petreli in his office, he talks about what he does, Linderman explains that he is a humanitarian, and that he doesn't collect paintings as a collector, but instead collects them as lives. He goes on to say "I want to heal humanity", nathan replies with "what do you know about healing". Linderman says "Quite a lot..." and moves his hands over a dead plant, the plant then starts to move and come back to health, turning purple and flowering.

well, thats Lindermans power, in great detail....

Please consider sponsoring/advertising our site

Thanks in advance

Bots attack!!

Hey Admin, it seems the wiki is beeing bot-spammed. Check out the Category:Articles for Deletion I'm trying to add them the +AFD tag but they are fast!!! :) I hope you will be able to ban them. See ya !! -- FrenchFlo (talk)        10:23, 10 April 2007 (EDT)

  • It's not a very intelligent bot. :) But yes, I've been blocking them as of about an hour ago or so. No worries. :) (Admin 10:25, 10 April 2007 (EDT))
    • Hehe ok. Sry for the +afd, thought it was usefull to remember they have to be deleted. I hate bot since they spammed my IRC channel... -- FrenchFlo (talk)        10:41, 10 April 2007 (EDT)
      • There's actually not even a mechanism available to delete users. I could remove them at the db level, but I'd rather not mess with it since it's not really a big deal if the accounts exist or not. As for AfD their user page didn't even exist at the time, so to create a new page for them already tagged with AfD doesn't really make sense. hehe. Yeah, bots are annoying, but the few safeguards already in place here help reduce the occurrences of actual article spam. (Admin 10:51, 10 April 2007 (ED

Slow day?

Wow, the correlation between the past week and today is way off. Kinda weird.--Bob 01:35, 12 April 2007 (EDT)

  • Are you looking at April 12? That's because there's only like an hour's worth of data so far for it. :) (Admin 01:37, 12 April 2007 (EDT))
  • Touché haha I'm dumb. Long day.--Bob 01:51, 12 April 2007 (EDT)

Belgium

In case you're not patrolling or checking all the recent changes, I thought I'd give you a heads up: [1]. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 07:20, 13 April 2007 (EDT)

New Namespaces?

So what did we ever decide about making some of the pseudonamespaces into namespaces? What needs to be done? If you need help moving articles, let me know. If we're going to do it, we ought to do it before the show comes back.--Hardvice (talk) 15:01, 14 April 2007 (EDT)

  • The articles will have to be renamed temporarily until the namespace can be created, then renamed back. I think I have some tools that should let me automate most of it. I'll just need to do some testing. (Admin 22:24, 14 April 2007 (EDT))

Old Linderman Archive picture changed

1) Go to Linderman's gallery the password is still Vietnam. 2) Look at painting 22 out of 23 ("The President Stands Alone" - Isaac Mendez - oil on canvas) there is now 4 lines of binary code across the picture. Running it through a translator you get: "Congratulations you have" 3) Also in the bottom lefthand corner there are three rectangles that weren't there before. The two shorter and lighter ones are on either side of the longer and darker one. Side by side they make a triangle/pyramid, that point to Nathan.

I just noticed this today. I have no clue how to edit a wiki or if this is even the right place for it so my apologies. Since it's new information in a section people might not check, I thought it might be relevant.

  • Check out this picture. Is this the one you're referring to? It's part of the the Heroes 360 storyline involving Brian. Check here for more info on the picture with the binary code. (Admin 00:18, 20 April 2007 (EDT))

Yup, my bad, sorry about that, I kind of glossed over the Brian stuff since it had already been mailed out and figured out while I was sleeping. But um, if I actually DO find something not posted yet, is this an okay place to put it?

Thank you!

Thank you for the prompt welcome! I'd also like to thank you for paying attention when one of your members vandalized Heroes.Wikia the other day. We had another brief flurry of vandalism today; it could be coincidental (I doubt anyone from here would use the name "User:Heroes_sucks"!) but I'd appreciate it if you would please continue to let your users know that this behavior is not acceptable to you.  :) We're all wiki-users!

We didn't mean to tread on any toes by creating Heroes.Wikia, by the way. We host wikis for a wide variety of television shows (among hundreds of other topics), and it's not surprising that some of our regular users (who often contribute to more than one wiki over there) were enthusiastic about this show too. We didn't know about this site when we accepted a user request to create ours. I think the two communities do have a lot they can learn from each other -- the preloaded template pages are just one example of ideas the Wikia folk have developed, and obviously you have a lot of great ideas for organizing and presenting content here. Let's keep encouraging people to be friendly with each other, and work on building complementary (not competing) sites.

Thanks again,

  • Hi, Catherine. One of the things that many of us have prided ourselves in is how responsibly our contributors have acted as a whole. It's a tribute to the spirit of collaboration that wikis promote. Vandalism of any site is extremely impolite and definitely discouraged. (Admin 16:31, 21 April 2007 (EDT))
    • Don't worry, that wasn't me. I've learned my lesson. :( Heroe!(talk) 16:56, 21 April 2007 (EDT)
      • Thanks, Heroe. I understand how sometimes impulse leads people to do things they regret. The fact that you realized this afterwards and went back to undo the changes you made was appreciated. (Admin 17:00, 21 April 2007 (EDT))

Seeking your inputs

Hi there. I'd like to request your 2 cents on this discussion here. I'd really like to know what the founder thinks as to the standards for content inclusion on the Heroes Wiki. Thanks a lot. --Mercury McKinnon 19:12, 24 April 2007 (EDT)

Request for Spanish Subdomain

  • Good Day Admin, as you may be aware, [[2]] Me and user Mariachiyo are interested in starting the effort to have this translated into Spanish, with the advantage that Mariachiyo is from Spain and I'm from Mexico.

Would be possible to create the SP sub-domain to start the translations, and etc.?

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need more information.

Thanks in advance

Best Regards. --Sitmex 07:44, 29 April 2007 (EDT)

  • Hi, Sitmex. I've setup http://es.heroeswiki.com for the Spanish translations. I'm copying over a little of the English content now just to get it up and running. (Admin 12:32, 29 April 2007 (EDT))

Lists

Is there any way I can view a list of users? How about a list of recent new articles?

War Buddies User List

Hi! I contacted you earlier about a list, but the link didn't work. Could you try again? (Andrewzors 20:33, 29 April 2007 (EDT))

  • Oops. I fixed the link on your page, try it now. (Admin 20:36, 29 April 2007 (EDT))
