All cases (I)

Jason has begun to see a strange pattern of behavior in his partner, Rachel Mills. After encountering Alex's father, Jason and Rachel search sectors of Costa Verde with spotty video and satellite surveillance until the still-dark hours of early morning. They then head to a motel and Rachel falls asleep on her bed. After the sun has come up, Rachel is awakened by Jason screaming at her from the doorway of their adjoining rooms. Rachel asks Jason what his problem is and he turns, heads back into his room and shuts the door. Rachel then realizes she is soaked with sweat, must have been dreaming again, and must have yelled.

Later, Rachel and Jason have bagels for breakfast at a table outside a small bakery. Rachel begins to say how they think they should proceed, but Jason interrupts her and says she said something in her sleep.

Options (I)

The player then gets to choose what Rachel says in reply.

Option 1A: Rachel asks what she said...

...but Jason just stares at her without replying. Rachel notices he has a hand under the table and is beginning to pull it out. The player again gets to choose how Rachel reacts. Option 1A.1: Rachel waits for Jason to act... ...and he puts one of his hands on one of hers. He says that he knows about her problem and is there for her. The player then chooses how Rachel responds. Option 1A.1A: Rachel says she can't talk about it... ...but Jason says that Rachel is not alone. Rachel replies that, of course, the "freaks" are everywhere. However, Jason says it's no way to talk as it's not their fault and slides a business card over to Rachel. He explains that the card is for a woman she should call, that she helped many of his friends over the years, and that PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is her specialty. Rachel then laughs out loud that this is what they are discussing and Jason frowns. The player then gets another two options for Rachel's response. Option 1A.1A.1: Rachel asks Jason what makes him think she has PTSD... ...and he explains that Rachel talks about the people she has lost and the missions that went bad in her dreams. Jason adds that she mentioned a blue girl, her grandfather and mother, and a bald guy. Rachel asks about the bald guy, but Jason can only say that he thinks he is another of the "freaks" she went after. He continues that Rachel keeps yelling at him to do something; but Rachel is offended at hearing him call them "freaks". She cuts him off before he can finish his sentence, says for them to go, and that they can continue the conversation later. Option 1A.1A.2: Rachel tells Jason they will think about it and they need to leave... ...and they do so. Option 1A.1B: Rachel claims to not know what he is talking about... ...and Jason responds that Rachel can't avoid it. She again says she doesn't know what he means, but Jason replies that he thinks she does. He asks if Rachel really thinks he hasn't noticed, and adds that Rachel's attempts to cover it up are making it worse. Jason then specifies the nightmare, obsessive training, and irritability. Rachel is offended by Jason calling the fugitives freaks, but she remains quiet about it. Jason then says that PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) cannot be ignored, and Rachel laughs out loud. Jason then frowns, so Rachel thanks him and tells him she will think about it. They then leave the bakery in the car. Option 1A.1C: Rachel asks how he found out... ...and Jason asks if Rachel is kidding. He also asks if she knows how long he has been in their business, and says that she is not the first friend that this has happened to. Rachel asks what he means by "happened to", and Jason clarifies that he is referring to PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Rachel is relieved that it doesn't appear Jason knows her secret, and listens as Jason continues. Jason tells Rachel she needs to address her condition, saying he has seen it harm his friends. He adds that he has seen it cause them to tear themselves and their families apart, and how it turns them towards drugs, violence, and isolation. Rachel then cuts him off, saying he's said enough; but Jason replies that he can't have her endangering the mission. Rachel then tries to convince Jason that she will not; and that since they count on their hunches for survival and are in the middle of a mission, now is not the time to question her decision-making. Jason responds that he believes her and that she is right, but Rachel notices he doesn't look convinced. They then leave the bakery by car. Option 1A.2: Rachel grabs Jason's arm... ...quickly and the table flips over with a crash. Nearby customers gasp as Rachel performs a chop on Jason's wrist, but he isn't holding anything. Rachel then notices a look of compassion on Jason's face. Jason tells her to look at herself and that she needs help, explaining that he thinks she has PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). He continues that she is not the first friend he's had that got sick, and says the experiences she has had in addition to her new job, taking on the "freaks", is the likely cause of her nightmares and defensiveness. Rachel is slightly relieved that Jason doesn't appear to know her secret, but is still unsettled that he calls them "freaks". She tells Jason that they can't deal with it right now, and says for them to get to work. They then leave the bakery by car.

Option 1B: Rachel says to disregard it as just sleep-talk and they need to leave...

All cases (II)

After Rachel directs Jason drive them about ten minutes through Costa Verde, Jason begins asking where they are going. However, Rachel says they are already where she wants to go and instructs Jason to park the car on the corner after making the next right turn. A half-block away, Jason spots a pool-cleaning van parked across the street from the Bennets' house and realizes where they are. He begins to Rachel if they should be there, but she tells him to be quiet and he does so. Rachel and Jason then approach the van on foot, and Rachel slaps her ID onto the van's window bringing to attention the two agents inside. Rachel says that they will take the current shift, and the two agents agree to take a break and leave.

While watching the Bennets' home from inside the van, Jason asks if Rachel thinks Claire is hiding Alex. Rachel replies that she does, noting that since Alex's apartment is still locked down and they have his car, he needs to be either hiding nearby or vanished into thin air. Jason responds that Alex wouldn't be the first of them to do exactly that, but Rachel insists that Claire has got him. Jason then suggests that they go "rattle the cage" and Rachel agrees with doing so.

As Rachel and Jason cross the street towards the Bennet house, they both a curtain move inside and comment that the Bennets see them coming. Jason adds that he is going around back and Rachel agrees to let him in when she gets inside. After Rachel bangs on the front door, she is let inside and allows Jason to enter from the back as planned. Claire Bennet then tells them that they shouldn't be there. Rachel turns around in the kitchen and looks at her, and thinks she looks fearful. Rachel then tells Claire that she knows Alex is there, but refers to him only as "he".

A moment later, Jason returns from searching upstairs and says that area is clear. Rachel spots Claire glance at her adopted mother, Sandra, and reads their faces. She then turns around and sees that a door leading to the pantry was behind her.

Options (II)

The player is given the option for Rachel to enter the pantry or interrogate Claire.

Option 2A: Rachel chooses to enter the pantry... Rachel opens the door and enters a pantry full of dark shelves and cans. The Bennets in the other room remain quiet as Rachel searches, but she doesn't find anyone. The player is then given the option for Rachel to give up or keep searching the pantry. Option 2A.1: Rachel chooses to give up... Rachel steps out of the pantry and says that she knows Alex is there somewhere. Claire then comments to Rachel something sarcastic and Sandra asks Rachel and Jason to leave, and they do so. Option 2A.2: Rachel decides to keep searching... ...and finds a loose shelf. She realizes there is a hidden panel panel behind the shelf, and opens it up to see a sliver of black and possibly the glint of eyes. Then, Rachel hears a gunshot in the kitchen, spins around with her gun raised, and sees that Jason has been shot in the chest. As Jason reels back up against a wall, Rachel points her gun at the shooter, Sandra Bennet. Claire then moves in, trying to block a shot at Sandra, but Rachel doesn't fire. Rachel repeatedly tells Sandra to fire, but Sandra hesitates also. Later, Rachel wonders who would have pulled the trigger first. To follow what actually happened, the player then follows Option 2A.1.

Option 2B: Rachel chooses to interrogate Claire... Rachel takes Claire by the arm and tells her it's time for some questions. Sandra responds by telling Rachel to let go, and Rachel wonders what Sandra's hand is holding under the counter. Then, Claire convinces Sandra to allow the questions, saying she is just making things worse for her when her father finds out. Rachel then pushes Claire into the next room. Claire asks why Rachel is so upset, and Rachel tells her she had friends on the plane Claire helped to take down. Claire replies that she did too and they didn't have a choice in the matter. Rachel responds that her people don't have a choice in how they do their job, noting that they signed up to protect the country and part of that means following orders. Claire remarks that she doesn't buy following orders as an excuse, saying that went out of style with the Nazis. Rachel then resists the urge to hit Claire, and asks Claire when she learned about her ability. Claire responds if Rachel hasn't already read her file, but Rachel lies and says no even though she has read it many times. She then gets Claire to explain she learned about her ability a few years ago, but didn't tell anyone at first as she thought she was a freak. Rachel remarks that she is, and then asks if Claire ever considered how much better life would be if Claire had kept the secret. She adds also if Claire considered the damage that has been done to her friends and family. Claire flinches and asks in a whisper why Rachel is asking these questions. However, Rachel stays silent and Claire realizes that she has a power. Sometimes now, Rachel wonders if that is how the conversation would have wound up, but interrogating Claire is not what Rachel chose to do. To follow what actually happened, the player then follows Option 2A.

All cases (III)

A couple hours later, the sun has gone down and Rachel and Jason are again watching the Bennet house in the pool cleaning van. Jason has started to say something a couple times, but stopped himself before doing so. Now, Jason is starting to get restless and Rachel spots Claire's car pull out into the street. Rachel sees blonde hair in the driver's seat and a hooded, slumped figure in the passenger's. Jason and Rachel then rush out of their van and jump in front of the car before it can leave. Then, the driver's window comes down and Rachel realizes she is aiming a flashlight at Sandra Bennet. Beside Sandra, the hooded male looks up, and Rachel sees that it is Claire's brother, Lyle. Sandra tells Rachel she is taking her son to the movies, and Rachel realizes she is being played. Suddenly, dogs start barking behind the Bennet house.

Options (III)

The player is given to the option for Rachel to race toward the noise or tell Sandra to call Claire.

Option 3A: Rachel chooses to chase the noise... Jason and Rachel race around the Bennet house and into the dark backyard. Arriving at the backyard fence, Rachel curses herself out loud for being fooled and Jason puts a hand on her shoulder to comfort her. He tells Rachel that they will get Claire, and Rachel instructs him to split off from her and make sure they don't cross the street beyond the houses. Jason tells Rachel to call him if she sees them, and he turns and climbs the fence. Rachel then turns the safety off on her pistol and continues the pursuit.

Option 3B: Rachel tells Sandra to phone Claire... ...Sandra says never and then remarks that Claire can't hear her from where they are. Rachel then instructs Jason to go after Claire and tell her they have her mother. Jason replies that it sounds like a bad idea, but heads around the house to do so when Rachel insists. She hears Jason's muffled shout from behind the Bennet house, but there is no response. Sandra then remarks that Claire is not stupid and knows their organization will not hurt them. Rachel responds that she thought Claire was in the house; and Sandra reaffirms that that is, adding that Claire is probably calling her father right now. Rachel then looks at the house and sees Eric Doyle standing inside next to a window. She pulls out her gun, and tells Sandra whom it is that she sees before starting towards the house to help Claire. Sandra responds by stopping Rachel from continuing and telling her that Claire isn't inside. Sandra continues that she knows who Eric Doyle is and that Rachel will die if she goes inside. Much later, Rachel wonders if this is how the conversation would have transpired. To follow what actually happened, the player then follows Option 3A.

All cases (IV)

Rachel arrives and searches around a blue-glowing pool. The area around the pool is very quiet until Jason radios Rachel that he thinks he sees them at the end of the street. Rachel and Jason rush to the end of the street, but don't find anyone. After retracing their steps for an hour, they head back to the van. Jason recommends backing off before Senator Petrelli learns what is going on, but gets interrupted when the mission laptop suddenly signals a new message has arrived. The laptop is between the seats, pointed in Rachel's direction, and she sees another message from REBEL asking for help and warning Rachel that a man might give away her secret.

Jason then grabs the laptop before Rachel can stop him, and asks about what he finds. He turns the laptop back towards Rachel and she sees that REBEL's message is now showing as a bunch of garbled text. Rachel tells Jason to contact headquarters and tell them to resend the data. When Jason turns away to do so, a new message appears at the bottom of the screen, "HERE'S HOW TO READ IT".

Rachel reads REBEL's instructions to "BREAK EACH LINE AT 60 CHARACTERS" and when she does so the line wrap she notices the text is an ASCII photo of Eric Doyle. She whispers aloud Eric Doyle's name and that it's unbelievable, but Jason doesn't understand what she says. Jason tells Rachel that headquarters is resending, that a new tip came in a few minutes ago, and now they have direct orders to move out. Rachel is surprised that headquarters actually was trying to send a message, but says only "okay" and stares back at the laptop screen.

Next Week on iStory The chase begins, and the target is someone with whom Rachel, REBEL, and Danko all have recent history... Rachel must work with REBEL again or her secret could be exposed... But a fateful surprise encounter will finally push Rachel past her limits... Meanwhile, REBEL reaches out for help...
