Talk:Portal:Education and Research

We're getting a lot of education places here and the research sites are looking a bit out of place. Might we split them off?--SacValleyDweller 17:03, 28 October 2007 (EDT)

  • 7 are schools or school-related sites. If we include the Cairo lecture hall, that would make a portal of 8 for "Portal:Education". Chandra's office should probably be moved to Portal:Offices (since that's it's primary function, I suppose. The medical facility could be moved to Portal:Medical Sites. Though I could go either way with Chandra's office and the medical facility, if we were to split them off, that would leave us 5 for "Portal:Research". I'm okay with that. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:41, 28 October 2007 (EDT)
  • This one doesn't really bother me too much yet. We should definitely move the medical facility and the office. After that, I'm fine with either splitting it or leaving it.--Hardvice (talk) 21:38, 28 October 2007 (EDT)
    • I should probably also add that most of my reluctance to split this comes from the fact that Portal:Places has twelve items, making for three rows of four, and two rows of six on template:PortalPlaceNav. While a large chunk of this concern is pure anal retentiveness, thirteen is kind of a large number of items for a portal/navbar. Now we could very easily do subportals (put apartments and homes as subpages of Residences (similar to Portal:World Locations), for example, or include Hotels, Restaurants, and maybe Transportation as subpages of Businesses (more like Portal:Things), and that would reduce the number on Portal:Places by a few--though it would mean more clicks to get to an article.--Hardvice (talk) 23:16, 28 October 2007 (EDT)
      • That's cool. I don't really mind one way or another. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:51, 28 October 2007 (EDT)
        • In that case, I am leaning towards subportals. I think it will provide us the most flexibility. Next question: should we just bite the bullet and make the GN places mirror the episode places? There's a breakdown on Talk:Portal:GN Miscellaneous Places of what we stand to gain and lose by doing so (we could also implement the "Parks & Outdoors" / "Recreation" portal over here). I almost want to do so just for parity's sake, and because we'll probably need to do so eventually, but some of those GN portals would be a bit sparse.

In any case, here's my proposed breakdown:
          • Businesses
            • Hotels & Casinos
            • Restaurants & Bars
            • Transportation
          • Education
          • Law Enforcement (could also be subportaled with "Politics" and future "Military" if needed under "Government")
          • Medical
          • Miscellaneous
          • Offices
          • Politics (see Law Enforcement)
          • Recreation
          • Research
          • Residences (currently no articles, though the shacks/cabins could move off of Homes)
            • Apartments
            • Homes
In that case, we've got ten top-level portals, or nine if we combine Law/Politics under one.--Hardvice (talk) 00:27, 29 October 2007 (EDT)
  • I don't feel too strongly one way or another, but I do prefer to hold off on mirroring the GN places until they need it. I'd hate to see a portal with just two or three places. Besides, I have a feeling we'll probably make new portals for Origins places, and there will be even less of them, so I don't want to start mirroring until we need to. That said, if you want to go ahead and do it, it's fine with me, just not my preference. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:01, 29 October 2007 (EDT)
  • I would like to see this kind of treatment with the Episode places, GO FOR IT!--SacValleyDweller 21:07, 29 October 2007 (EDT)

Revisit split

So we have six cells, seven schools, two museums, the Company's facility, and a lecture hall. How might this best be split? "Education" vs. "research" gives us 10 Education and 7 research, but six of the research are also "cells". However, "cells" would be a weird choice for a subportal here, since it's not obvious what incarceration has to do with research until you look at the articles. "Schools" would strand the museums and the lecture hall. We could also move "cells" under Law Enforcement, but the Company isn't involved in law enforcement. Ideas?--Hardvice (talk) 16:41, 14 November 2007 (EST)
