In Chapter 1, “The Battle of the Twelve Swords”, Professor Donna Dorn documents Japan’s Edo period, proclaiming White Beard has turned Japan from its most prosperous time to its bloodiest. Expecting an easy victory, she says, he marched to Otsu with only a small company of men. He was met by Takezo Kensei, who saved the people of Otsu, in what became known as the Battle of Twelve Swords.
In Chapter 2, “The Trial of the Fire Scroll”, Donna comments that entire villages were burnt as a result of people trying to steal the Fire Scroll from White Beard. In order to get to the Fire Scroll, Kensei had to defeat the ninety angry ronin. Dorn documents that White Beard had picked his ninety most cruel men to guard the scroll.
In Chapter 3, “The Trial of the Hidden Fortress”, Donna documents that the Snake Women Kensei had to face were twin sisters whom were known for killing their foes with serpent venom.
In Chapter 4, Part 2, “Kensei and the Dragon”, Donna believes that Yaeko did in fact exist, but she was not Kensei’s great love.
In Chapter 5, “The Mystery of Kensei”, Donna comments that little is known about Kensei's sword’s origin.
