"Soma" on Wikipedia

The word soma appears frequently in comics illustrated by Micah Gunnell. In an interview, Micah said that he uses the term as a reference to the drug used to control the population in Aldous Huxley's dystopian novel Brave New World. Micah said, "Basically, I used to do a little bit of graffiti back in the day, and 'soma' was my tag....I'm definitely a politically-minded person, very anti-government control, and I think there are many parallels between Aldous Huxley's vision of the future and the world we're on the brink of living in today. So basically I want to make people think by putting that in there."

The word soma has multiple meanings, including the following:

  • Soma is the Greek word for body. It is used in anatomy to refer to cell bodies, such as the soma of neurons, and is the root of the words somatic and psychosomatic.
  • Soma is the name of a hallucinogenic drink used ritualistically by early Vedic and Persian cultures. The exact plant used is no longer known, but it has been hypothesized to be either a hallucinogenic mushroom or cannabis.
  • Soma is a Hindu god often depicted by a bull, bird, or embryo. The god evolved into a lunar deity, and is often identified with the Hindu moon god Chandra.
  • Soma is the name of a narcotic tranquilizer regularly taken by all members of society in order to produce feelings of euphoric happiness in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.
  • Soma is a brand name of the prescription medication Carisoprodol, a skeletal muscle relaxant which has been found to have some abuse potential.
  • Soma is a decades-old, very popular punk and hardcore music venue in San Diego, CA.
  • Soma is the title of songs by The Strokes and Smashing Pumpkins.
  • Soma Holiday is the former name of the band currently known at Go Van Gogh (intermediately known as Greenwheel); it was also the name of Greenwheel's 2002 debut LP album.
