  • James and the gang learn more about the Shanti Virus.

Glad, however, must have been braver then they'd thought. In the weeks that followed she did seem to be getting paler and thinner, but it didn't look as though she'd cracked yet. Every time they passed the third-floor corridor, James, Michael and Jenny would press there ears to the door to cheak if that beast was still growling inside. Sky was sweeping about in her usual cold mood, which surely ment that the Shanti Virus was safe. Whenever James passed miss Yaga these days she gave him an encouraging smile. Jenny, however, had more on her mind than the Shanti Virus. She had started a little project on painting. James and Michael wouldn't have minded, but she kept nagging them to look at a sketch she had made of her flying and especially about the upcomming tests. 'Jenny, the exams are ages away.' 'Ten weeks,' Jenny snapped. 'That's not ages.' 'What are you revising for anyway? You already know it all.' 'What am I revising for? Are you mad? You realise we need to pass these exams to get into the second year? They're very important, I should have started studying weeks ago, I don't know what's got into me...'

Unfortunatly, the teachers seemed to be thinking along the same lines as Jenny. They piled so much homework on them that the Easter holidays weren't nearly as much fun as the Christmas ones. It was hard to relax with Jenny next to you reciting the seven ability families. Moaning and yawning, James and Michael spent most of their free time in the library with her, trying to get through all their extra work. 'I'll never remember this,' Michael burst out one afternoon, throwing down his pen and looking longingly out of the window. It was the first really fine day they'd had in months. The sky was clear, blue and there was a feeling in the air of summer coming. James, who was looking up 'Ability replication' in Ability homology: The many uses, didn't look up until he heard Michael say, 'Donna! What are you doing in the library?' Donna shuffled into view, hiding something behind her back. 'Just Lookin',' she said, in a shifty voice that got their interest at once. 'Listan,' she said 'Why don't you come and see me later? And I'll make you all a nice cuppa' tea.'

'What was she hiding behind her back?' said Janny thoughtfully. 'Do you think it had something to do with the Virus?' 'I'm goin to see what section she was in,' said Michael, who'd had enough of working. He came back a minute later with a pile of books and slammed them down on the table. 'Dogs!' he whispered. 'Donna was looking up stuff about dogs.' 'Donna's always wanted a dog, she told me so the first time I ever met her,' James said.

When they knocked on the door of the dinnerladies quaters an hour later, they were suprised to find that all the curtains were closed. Donna called, 'Who is it?' before she let them in and shut the door quickly behind them. It was stiflingly hot inside. Even though it was such a warm day, there was a blazing fire in the grate. 'So, you wanted to ask me somethin'?' 'Yes,' said James. There was no point beating about the bush. 'We were wondering, because you've worked here a while if you could tell us anything about the Shanti Virus and what is gaurding it.' Donna frowned at him. 'Of course I can't,' she said. 'Number one, I don't know myself. Number two, you know too much already, so I wouldn't tell you if I could. That virus here for a reason. It was almost stolen out of its last place. But ... I gusses it wouldn't hurt to tell yeh that ... let's see ... some of the teachers did traps ... Mrs Marbloss - Mr King - Miss Grace the librarian -' she ticked them off on her fingers, 'Miss Yaga - and Miss Magpie herself did something, of course. Hang on, I've forgotten someone. Oh yeah, Miss Sky.' 'Sky?' James knew Michael and Jenny were thinking the same as he was. If Sky had been protecting the virus, it must have been easy to find out how the other teachers had guarded it. She probably knew everything - except, it seemed, Yaga's power and how to get past that horrible creature.
