  • It's normal, that all signature times are in EST timezone? In my prefferences I have set the timezone offset to 1:00 as I am in CET (UST+1) timezone. (Zarevak 17:13, 27 November 2006 (EST))
  • Yeah, when using ~~~~ for signatures it uses the server's default timezone for everyone. Right now the server uses EST (GMT -5) so that's how it comes up. Since ~~~~ just substitutes the signature text in when the page is submitted it's not dynamic so signatures couldn't come up in the viewer's own timezone. I'll probably change the wiki in the future to use GMT for uniformity since that's how most dates/times are given here already. (Admin 14:42, 28 November 2006 (EST))
  • You can also go to Special:Preferences, choose "Date and Time" and offset the date/time to your time zone by pushing "Fill in from browser". Ryangibsonstewart 15:39, 28 November 2006 (EST)

Wikipedia (RE: Genesis)

  • Thank you for acknowleding wikipedia as the original source (-: MatthewFenton 12:33, 19 October 2006 (EDT)
    • Sorry for causing a ruckus over at Wikipedia. :) I'm trying to encourage people to replace the reprinted content with original content and new synopses will be written here and not reprinted. Collision, for instance, is an original synopsis. No point in having a site just reprinting all of Wikipedia. ;) Any other issues, feel free to let me know! (Admin 12:38, 19 October 2006 (EDT))

  • Any plans to use categories? Any particular objection to doing so? -- Hardvice 03:36, 20 October 2006 (EDT)
    • If no one else added them, I'm sure I'd end up adding them eventually. No objection at all to using them, if you want to add categories then go for it! :) (Admin 09:17, 20 October 2006 (EDT))

GD Library

  • Activating Evolution.jpg
The GD library is not completely installed for .jpg's. We can't use thumbs or galleries because it can't create the scaled images. The message it gives is "Incomplete GD library configuration: missing function imagecreatefromjpeg" (see image at right). It works OK for .png's, though. I thought it might be cool to put together a gallery of Isaac's paintings and of the places the symbol has shown up.--Hardvice 02:04, 22 October 2006 (EDT)
    • I probably missed it when I specifically compiled PHP5 for MediaWiki. I'll recompile PHP when I have a chance and include GD support this time. Thanks for the heads up. (Admin 02:06, 22 October 2006 (EDT))
      • Awesome. Thanks!--Hardvice 11:13, 22 October 2006 (EDT)

  • Did you see the preview at the end of the marathon last night?--Hardvice 17:18, 23 October 2006 (EDT)
    • No, I didn't catch it. I tend to not watch clips from upcoming shows so that I'm more surprised during the show itself. Based on your reaction, however, I can assume that they were pretty good. :) (Admin 17:21, 23 October 2006 (EDT))
      • Yeah. They did a two-minute preview from a bunch of upcoming episodes. There was nothing too spoilerish, but there were some pretty impressive moments. It's on Youtube if you get curious.--Hardvice 17:25, 23 October 2006 (EDT)

  • Went and photoshopped you a Lostpedia-like logo. Feel free to use it if you like it. Also, I don't have a ton of wiki experience but I'd be willing to help out with your little project - if you still need it, that is.--YoShIe 22:54, 24 October 2006 (EST)
    • Hi, YoShIe. If we could get a logo like that but at a higher resolution with ther name "HeroesWiki" clearly visible on the front cover then I think that could also be a good logo. I wouldn't call this my project since it's the really the community that helps build this site and make it what it is. :) Feel free to contribute any material you think would be helpful, I'm sure everyone will appreciate it. (Admin 23:07, 24 October 2006 (EDT))
      • I will see about something like that tomorrow. All I have time left for tonight is sleep.--YoShIe 23:19, 24 October 2006 (EST)
        • Heh... I know the feeling. Nice to have you here, YoShIe. Hope you have a good time! (Admin 23:21, 24 October 2006 (EDT))

Episode Template

This should be pretty easy if we use {{subst:}}. Just copy Better Halves and save it as a template.--Hardvice 19:29, 28 October 2006 (EDT)

Forgot to ask

  • Can you delete Hardvice/Main Page for me? We shouldn't need it any more.--Hardvice 01:35, 31 October 2006 (EST)
    • Done. (Admin 01:38, 31 October 2006 (EST))

Adding my fan site

  • Hello, I love this place, it's such a great idea! I have built a fan site called HeroesAddicts at Would it be possible to add it in the fan site list? If yes, I could definitely add a link to this page on my site. Thanks. -Psyko, SysOp
    • Sure, I'll add it for you. (Admin 14:23, 5 November 2006 (EST))
      • Thanks! I just added a link to this page on my site header.

Adding a german version

  • Hi, i've posted this already on the discussion on the mainpage, but i can't wait the answer ;-)I'm from germany and since the first episode a fan of heroes. I'd like to translate the heroes-wiki into german as soon as possible, because i've started once the translation of lostpedia into german and there was already thousands of information. The faster we get the possibilty to start this thing, the more easier it would be. At your question: Google-Translation works okay, but there are a lot of weird meanings coming out sometimes. For two short words like "turn left" it's okay, but a whole sentence...forget it ;-) Greetings --Bob 23:07, 8 November 2006 (PDT)
    • Hi, Bob! I'll setup a German version for you today as soon as I get a chance. Glad to have you here and good luck on the translations! :) (Admin 17:12, 8 November 2006 (EST))
      • Thx a lot! Sorry for the double post, but i was too excited ;-)--Bob 23:17, 8 November 2006 (PDT)
  • I have a question: The logo you'll take thats winning in the contest, it will be for ALL languages or should we design our own logo? In case, we all take the same, i'm gonna erase the contest or better, link them on your contest. --Bob 03:25, 9 November 2006 (PDT)
    • The logos will be the same across the wikis, so sure, go ahead and link to the main one if you'd like or just remove the link. I'll setup interwiki links soon so it'll be easier to reference back and forth. (Admin 21:29, 8 November 2006 (EST))
      • Okay, done. I linked the contest to the main one. --Bob 04:05, 9 November 2006 (PDT)

Main Page: Podcasts

Heya, I was looking at the front page and I noticed that there aren't any of the fan discussion podcasts in the fansites directory on the main page. I was going to pop in the 2 I know of, but then I got an idea I wanted to run by you. Would it be okay if I made a separate directory similar to the fansite one, but just for podcasts? It would be nice to have them distinguished in some way from regular fansites, and if the Heroes fanbase ends up being anything like the ones for Lost or Alias, there's going to be a lot more than 2 podcasts by the end of the season. (3 22:29, 10 November 2006 (EST))

  • The3, I added a new Template:Podcasts for you to fill out. --Orne 22:59, 10 November 2006 (EST)
  • Hey, The3. You dont need to run anything by me, just run it by the community. :) A posting on Talk:Main Page usually gets you some opinions on an idea. :) For my own part I don't know whether I think a separate section would look good, or whether it would be better to just place them within Fan Sites, but at the bottom with a header that says Podcasts. Plus I think we should avoid cluttering the main page too much and a separate section (like Fan Sites or News are) has a lot of overhead. It's possible in the future if we get too many fan sites then we'll remove the straight list of fan sites off the main page and instead place them in a separate article and link to them. But whatever the community thinks looks best we should go for. (Admin 00:33, 11 November 2006 (EST))

Portal Pages

Check out the portal pages Bob's got set up on the German site. What do you think of them? I like 'em and may well steal 'em. He has them linked from the Main Page where we have the category links.--Hardvice (talk) 01:16, 11 November 2006 (EST)

  • I like them, makes it an easy alternative for navigation. --Orne 01:37, 11 November 2006 (EST)
  • Yeah, I like them, too. Nice and visual. (Admin 01:59, 11 November 2006 (EST))
  • Did i told you about the price for copy this? 50$ once and 1$ for each click. ;-) --Bob 23:21, 12 November 2006 (CET)

XML Files for Upload?

Ok, I think I have an idea. What we could do is build a page on your website that supports the Google Map API, but the code in the page would use an included XML file to hold the coordinates of the map markers + map polygon lines. The other wiki users would edit the XML file, and upload it in-place when they want to edit the map -- this would protect your server from allowing users to edit JavaScript code, and XML is not renderable as HTML in browsers. Right now, the .xml extension is not recognized as an uploadable image format for uploading in Wiki. I don't know if any of this would actually work though :) --Orne 14:56, 11 November 2006 (EST)

French interlanguage links from German wiki

I don't seem to be able to link from the German wiki to the French one. Trying it on the main page yields in a red link to an article named fr:. Not that there's too much activity going on... Any clues? -- CmdrCash 17:35, 11 November 2006 (EST)

I hadn't added the French site to the list of German interwiki links or vice versa. I had only added English to each of them. I've added the proper links to the database now, so it should work. (Admin 17:40, 11 November 2006 (EST))

So should we move these over redirect or leave 'em be? Also, how fully do we want to follow WP naming standards? We currently have a ton of articles that begin with "The" for example. I think these sound better in Plot Points, at least, but the standard would make editing and reading a lot easier.--Hardvice (talk) 00:54, 15 November 2006 (EST)

Personally I liked how they were before. When writing an article and making a reference to Linderman's cop it's easier to just use [[Linderman's cop]] rather than have to do [[Linderman's Cop|Linderman's cop]] just for spelling. I think articles should be named how they're likely to be seen in context like before. Usually when the article is multiple words that means the other words will be lower case. The Symbol is a specifically named symbol, so that's capitalized naturally. The articles starting with The don't really matter because whether you use the or The MediaWiki will automatically capitalize the first letter. (Admin 01:00, 15 November 2006 (EST))
I'll go ahead and move 'em back then as appropriate--Hardvice (talk) 01:35, 15 November 2006 (EST).

Portal Pages & Screen Resolutions

  • When you have a moment, can you take a look at Template Talk:PortalPlotPoints? We're having difficulty with the rendering of some of the portal pages at low screen res and I'm not sure what the best answer is. Thanks!--Hardvice (talk) 03:05, 15 November 2006 (EST)

Google Adwords

Sorry for the delay! For the record:

I'd like to attract some more German users via Google Adwords to the German site.
Could you tell me the best way in German to say "Community driven repository of
all things related to NBCs show Heroes". Thanks! Admin (00:03, 25 November 2006 (EST))

My suggestion: "Gemeinschaftlich erstellter Wissensfundus zur NBC-Sendung Heroes" -- CmdrCash 09:26, 27 November 2006 (EST)

greetings from wikia

I noticed you were buying ads to promote your wiki - and I wondered whether we might be able to help instead.
Wikia currently has 2,000 wiki projects, including over 100 TV shows and we host wikis for free - and promote them internally on our site. If you have any interest, feel free to contact me at my user page gil

Thanks for the offer, but things are going great here. We're all set already. (Admin 23:46, 27 November 2006 (EST))

Changing Screen cap to {{image-screenshot}}

  • Before I go through and do this on all nine million images, I thought I'd see if you know if there's some way to do it with a bot or something. They should be pretty consistently labeled "screen shot" on a separate line, if that helps.--Hardvice (talk) 17:52, 29 November 2006 (EST)
    • I'll see if I can find something. Otherwise let's just worry about newly uploaded files for now. Plenty of time to go back and fix the old ones. We're not under any pressure, I just want to make sure we do the right thing by acknowledging the copyright. (Admin 18:15, 29 November 2006 (EST))
      • Cool. I went ahead and did the promotional images because there weren't very many of them.--Hardvice (talk) 18:27, 29 November 2006 (EST)
        • Excellent, thanks! Since we're getting popular I wouldn't want to anger those in charge of the show, so I figured we need to tighten up a little bit. Lostpedia's already been through this, so we're best learning from their experiences. (Admin 18:29, 29 November 2006 (EST))
          • If it comes to it, I'm a currently-unemployed licensing attorney. I can write DMCA counternotifications with the best of them. ;) --Hardvice (talk) 18:34, 29 November 2006 (EST)

Pages for Deletion

I found three pages that were redirects for misspelling. They should be deleted, right, so as to not encourage spelling mistakes in our articles? ... I either can't or don't know how (either choice is equally viable) to delete these pages. Can you take care of that? Thanks! - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:23, 30 November 2006 (EST) Pages for Deletion:

  • Claire'sTape
  • Mr Petrelli
  • Yamagoto Industries
All taken care of. Thanks! (Admin 01:28, 30 November 2006 (EST))
Am I correct: page deletion is not something I can do, correct? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:31, 30 November 2006 (EST)
Correct, deletions are left to the sysops. For regular articles there would be a "Request for deletion" topic on the associated talk page discussing the reason for requesting an article be deleted and to make sure people were in agreement... plus the article would belong to Category:Articles_for_Deletion. We've already discussed deleting misspelled redirects, so there was no need to wait. (Admin 01:36, 30 November 2006 (EST))
Okay, one more spelling mistake: Mr Linderman - thanks! - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:30, 30 November 2006 (EST)
One thing we could do is tag a page with Category:Articles for Deletion so that Admin can go and take a look at them later, and either delete or remove it from the category. It's an idea that I "borrowed" from another Wiki. --Orne 13:01, 30 November 2006 (EST)

A page for deletion: Gabriel Grey, since it encourages misspelling. Thanks! - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:51, 3 December 2006 (EST)

Google Translations

Hello, First of all, Great looking site, very clean and well organized. Definitely a model for me. I currently run, and desperately need to setup up alternate languages to my site as you did with google translations. Could you possibly give me some pointers on how you went about doing this. I appreciate any help on this. ThanksRovo 08:35, 30 November 2006 (EST)

Does it have something to do with the hook, LanguageGetMagic ? I just can't figure out how you made the 'Deutsch' link dynamic, so it changes which info it sends to google depending on the page your at. Any pointers would be a great help. Thanks again Rovo 15:45, 2 December 2006 (EST)

Hey, Rovo. Sorry about the delay. Here's a basic example to get you started. Create a page MediaWiki:Google-DE. The contents of that page could be (you'd have to change the site URL encoded in the URL there):{{FULLPAGENAME}}&langpair=en%7Cde

Then in MediaWiki:Sidebar you could add something like:

  • Google-DE|Deutsch

This will include a link named Deutch that when clicked will call Google-DE using the FULLPAGENAME of the originating page. Just need to change that URL to your own so it translates your site.

Awesome I can't thank you enough for that lesson, thats a great solution you've found. I really appreciate your help, thanks again. Rovo 15:04, 3 December 2006 (EST)
Not sure if this is possible, just a recommendation, maybe add an English link to the Google translation box. This may make it slightly easier for a user to return to the english version without retyping in the address . Just a suggestion...maybe not a good one. :o) --Rovo 13:27, 8 December 2006 (EST)
Good idea, I'll do that now. Thanks! (Admin 13:30, 8 December 2006 (EST))
Actually, I tried this before. The problem is that Google changes the link automatically and tries to keep translating it. So once you switch languages you pretty much need to retype the site address to get away from Google's translations. It'd be nice if Google had some kind of notranslate tag, but I haven't found one yet. (Admin 13:36, 8 December 2006 (EST))
