Adrenaline or epinephrine is a natural hormone found in many animals that accelerates physical performance in times of stress. It has medical uses, including treatment for cardiac arrest and severe allergic reactions.

During a blackout at a New York City hospital, an adult patient experiences cardiac arrest. A doctor and nurse try to revive him with a shot of adrenaline.
The Second Coming
Mohinder watches Maya's ability activate and realizes that abilities are based in the adrenal glands. He takes a sample of her adrenaline.
Later, at a pier, he injects himself with it, giving him a monstrous ability.
Dual
Sylar injects Meredith with a large dose of adrenaline, causing her power to become uncontrollable. She begins to involuntarily release bursts of flame that become larger and more frequent as time passes. Eventually, her ability creates an explosion that sets the entire building on fire.
