- According to The National Post's July 25, 2007 report on the press conference (sponsored by the Television Critics Association), Maya is "a young woman plagued by a threatening ability that has driven both her and her twin brother Alejandro (Shalim Ortiz) from their home in the Dominican Republic to make the dangerous crossing to the United States in search of help."
- According to the July 19, 2007 issue of TV Guide, Maya "will be seen working her way through Central America and Mexico to try to enter the U.S. illegally." Dania Ramirez says, "Maya is a very good person but her abilities have made her extremely dangerous." She continues, "This has caused a lot of havoc in her life." "She'll be on the run with her twin brother, Alejandro (Shalim Ortiz), and find border trouble along the way."
- Dania Ramirez told Michael Ausiello on July 24, 2007 that Maya will be "on the run from the cops."
