Known power

I'm confused on something. On the "known power" space, it says Maya's power is "none". However, we know she has a power, we just don't know exactly what it is. So is her known power still "none"? --Hero!(talk)(contribs) 20:21, 18 September 2007 (EDT)

  • Right, if we take into account spoiler info, we could add her to the evolved human category but since the exact power is not known, "known power" should be "none". Minus spoilers, also, we don't know she has a power. She could simply have a virus similar to one described in Chandra's book.--MiamiVolts (talk) 20:42, 18 September 2007 (EDT)
  • You said it yourself, Heroe: we don't know what her power is. So she has no known power. Confusing, I agree. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:08, 18 September 2007 (EDT)
    • Shouldn't it make more sense to put "unknown" rather than "none"? When you use "none", it seems to state that she doesn't have a power at all, which isn't true. -- Reubs1 03:42, 25 September 2007 (EDT)
      • She doesn't have an "unknown known power". She has no "known power". Ergo, "none".--Hardvice (talk) 03:48, 25 September 2007 (EDT)
  • I've updated it on the theory we know she has the power to kill people, even though we don't know almost nothing about how she kills people. --Ted C 10:07, 25 September 2007 (EDT)
    • On a related note, would we want to create a page called Hana's power, to be renamed later when we know more about it? --Ted C 10:09, 25 September 2007 (EDT)
      • Don't you mean Maya's Power? You could make a user sub page. I would like to see it. -Lөvөl 04:31, 27 September 2007 (EDT)

I have thought the way we use the 'known power' box is confusion as well. This option is really has a tri-phased answer, and the way it is designed presently, it is can only handle a two-phased answer (Y/N). What if we changed the label to just say: "power:" (removing the 'known'); and then we only support 3 answers.

1) power: none (no power exists) or
2) power: Flight (a power exists, and we have agreed upon its name) or
3) power: uncertain (a power exists, but we are yet uncertain of its name...and their might be a better word than uncertain, but the premise it conveys should show a yet-to-be-named power definately exists)

This tri-phase approach would remove the confusion, and we would know for every person, whether or not they have a power, and if it is certain, what that power is. --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 09/25/2007 10:17 (EST)

  • That would be an acceptable solution to me. --Ted C 13:04, 25 September 2007 (EDT)
    • I like HiroDynoSlayer's solution, but it opens debate on whom we are sure is an evolved human. ie. is Charles Deveaux evolved? I'm okay with that, but I think that's the main reason this was not previously changed as HDS is now suggesting.--MiamiVolts (talk) 13:21, 25 September 2007 (EDT)
      • "Uncertain" actually allows more leeway than HiroDynoSlayer suggests, since it can be used for characters who may or may not have a power, although there is reason to think they do. You could also use "uncertain" for people about whom we suspect a power without being sure, and using "undefined" for characters we know have a power without knowing what it does. --Ted C 13:25, 25 September 2007 (EDT)
        • Right. The extra "leeway" is exactly the reason I think this was not done before. The tradeoff is clarity for certainty, and we should let the other admin voice their opinion; though, don't get me wrong--I do like the idea, I'm just playing a little devil's advocate here so we don't get our hopes up too soon that this will get changed.--MiamiVolts (talk) 13:36, 25 September 2007 (EDT)
          • Maybe 'Undefined' is a better term than 'Uncertain' to describe the 3rd phase of 'Yes, they have a power, we just aren't ready to name it yet' case. Maya is the best current example, we know she has a power, we just haven't come up with a name for it yet. Here power isn't none, but it is Undefined. --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 09/25/2007 14:37 (EST)
            • I'm beginning to think the solution I implemented is the best: a short statement of what we know. We know she has a power and that it can kill people, but that's about all we know. --Ted C 11:04, 27 September 2007 (EDT)
  • In Today's "The Daily News", there was a section of interviewing with Dania Ramírez. Although she wouldnt spill the beans on maya's powers, she did say "Trust me, you don't want to make her cry". Maybe her tears release an aromatic virus? Divinebaboon 22:36, 26 September 2007 (EDT)
  • The trouble is, the minute we change from "known power" to "power", everybody who hasn't displayed a power becomes "uncertain". You can never prove that somebody doesn't have a power. Rufus could have a power. The bus driver could have a power. Mr. Muggles could have a power. That's precisely the reason we don't categorize into "people who have a power" and "people who don't have a power", but rather into "people who have displayed a power" and "people who haven't displayed a power" -- in other words, people who have or don't have a known power. And technically, Maya doesn't have a known power. It's possible (though contradicted by every shred of available evidence) that she has no power whatsoever. Consider this: Alejandro has the power, when separated from his sister by more than a hundred yards, to summon magical pixies at her location that turn all of a person's body fluids into 10W30. Now there's absolutely no reason to suppose this is true, but it's certainly not disproven by anything we've seen. Alejandro and Maya believe she has a power, and when Alejandro was not present (and Maya was conveniently off camera), something caused an entire truck load of people to die a very sticky death. But we can't even assume that this is a result of Maya's power (though it almost certainly is), because we didn't see her use a power. The only three-way classification that's even vaguely plausible is "people who haven't displayed a power", "people who have displayed a power", and "people who haven't displayed a power but we're really pretty sure they probably have one", and that's just silly and largely arbitrary.--Hardvice (talk) 05:06, 27 September 2007 (EDT)
    • Agreed. I think the problem is some users want to spread speculation via the infobox, but it's not the place to do it. More than likely, Maya has an ability and Alejandro has one as well that neutralizes it (based on their dialogue and spoilers) but until we actually see Maya's ability in action versus the effects of it, then we don't know she actually is an EH.--Bob 05:38, 27 September 2007 (EDT)
      • That's my guess, too. (Another fun possibility: they both have the same power, but just cancel each other out when together--after all, we've only seen Maya on her own around other people.) Still ... imagine those 10W30 pixies, eh?--Hardvice (talk) 05:47, 27 September 2007 (EDT)
        • Actually, Tim Kring just said in an interview, "Alejandro has the power of summoning oil fairies." I'll have to get back to you with a link later. :) ... I think it's important for all of us to remember that Heroes Wiki is primarily a site for reporting, cataloging, and classifying things that have occurred in the Heroes world. Now, we're also a fan site, and people (myself included) have some great theories--and Heroes lends itself to great speculation. But there's a place for strict reporting, and for fun speculation--the infobox and main namespace is not the place for taking really good guesses or for saying "this prolly happen'd." It's a fine line, difficult to see at times, and one of the main reasons we're so quickly approaching 100,000 edits. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:05, 27 September 2007 (EDT)
  • There is a very big resemblance between Maya & Alejandro and antoher animated television series called Twins of Destiny, they also have abilitys and in order to use their magic, Jules and Julie would have to hold hands also.

Reflections on Four Months Later

I think she has the power to explode people's brains. Or something.--IMax 00:55, 25 September 2007 (EDT)

  • As Hardvice mentioned on the episode page, until we witness the use of her power, we can't name it, but my guess is that she is altering the makeup of people's blood stream (thus the black-colored blood; the GN Maya and Alejandro showed with the autopsy that the black fluid is not limited to the eyes/face, but is in the chest cavity as well).--MiamiVolts (talk) 04:02, 25 September 2007 (EDT)

Spoiler Tags Still Necessary?

We now know that Maya and Alejandro are characters, even if we don't know that they'll be on the show without spoiling it. I think we took Hana's spoiler tag off when her first comic was released, so why not these two? --AvadaNella 00:41, 19 September 2007 (EDT)

  • The main reason is that unlike the Hana graphic novel, this graphic novel didn't confirm their identities so that's still a spoiler. On a related note, if the article is despoiled we should swap in the graphic novel photos for their portraits, but we don't have to do that yet cause the characters were not officially introduced in the graphic novel.--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:58, 19 September 2007 (EDT)
    • Exactly. Hana's was a different case, because she was introduced as a graphic novel character first, and there had been no spoiler article for her. It wasn't until much later that she became an episodic character. These characters were first identified as episodic spoilers, then introduced as GN characters, and will eventually be seen as episodic characters. Now, had the characters been explicitly identified in the GN, we'd be in the curious position of making a spoiler character into a GN character and then into an episodic character, but since they weren't explicitly identified, they should remain spoiler characters.--Hardvice (talk) 03:04, 19 September 2007 (EDT)
      • Ah, I gotcha. Sorry if I came off with a little "do-it-like-this-or-it'll-be-wrong" attitude. =P --AvadaNella 00:27, 20 September 2007 (EDT)
        • Not at all. We all just like to give very detailed answers sometimes to help clarify things. :) (Admin 00:32, 20 September 2007 (EDT))

Maya's Power Name

Can we come up with a name for her ability? Could we start with something simple like, Viral Poisoning (since the GN uses the phrase these people were poisoned by somebody and it says the ability to host a deadly virus? At least that would allow us to get her catalogued and listed, and if we need to tweak the name later, it would all be in place. --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 09/25/2007 10:45 (EST)

  • Not until we see her use her power. I think it's not a bad idea, though, if we want to talk about what it could be. You're right about my deriving the name viral poisoning from the graphic novel. :)--MiamiVolts (talk) 11:03, 25 September 2007 (EDT)
TV Guide called it an instantaneously killing vrius, jsut my 2 cents. Dean Harper 18:29, 25 September 2007 (EDT)

  • Yeah, I agree with Miami. In the powers section I just wrote down what best I could. I don't think we could write anything until further episodes. And I can guess we'll being see more of Maya. • Yeah......--Hero!(talk)(contribs) 22:15, 2 October 2007 (EDT)
    • I already mentioned this elsewhere, but "stigmata" is too religiously loaded and not at all likely to conjure an image even vaguely similar to what she does. Stigmata doesn't imply black or dark; it just implies blood. And it additionally implies, for most people at least, a relation to the five holy wounds of Christ--the hands/wrists, feet, and side. Bloody tears aren't unknown, but they're scarcely the first association people will make.--Hardvice (talk) 14:58, 7 October 2007 (EDT)
  • How the very simple "Death Stare"? Too speculative? --Hero!(talk)(contribs) 20:05, 3 October 2007 (EDT)

          • We know nothing more today than we did a week ago. I'd rather get some more information from Kindred, and see what Joe Pokaski and Aron Coleite have to say about things. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:01, 7 October 2007 (EDT)
            • Agreed. Still no idea how it works (is it a virus? is it a toxin? is it something else?), so any name would still be speculative. Really, this is no different than the process we go through with other articles. We don't know the name of the hooded killer, so we're calling him/her "the hooded killer". As we learn more, we'll get a more precise grip on the killer's identity, and eventually, we'll get a name. Even if everyone agreed the killer was Tina, and everybody voted to rename the article, it still would be wrong to rename it, because it's pure speculation.--Hardvice (talk) 14:58, 7 October 2007 (EDT)

I know that a lot of new powers don't have names and probably won't unless they say them in the show, but I was watching the comentary (i think it's spelled wrong; I'm an awful speller). Anyway I don't remember the episode, whichever one with Tim Kring in the comentary, he said it was a "Plague" that she emits. So a good name for the power would be: "Plague Emition", but this is just a thought.--Patrick 16:07, 25 October 2007 (EDT)

Description of powers

The Powers section on this page needs a bit of tweaking. Besides being partly written in the wrong person, I'm not entirely sure that "there are many hints that you do not want to upset Maya or something bad will happen." There's also a bit of speculation that needs to be adjusted. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 12:05, 28 September 2007 (EDT)

I added her power description as Viral Infection...should we change it?--DarkPhoenix 21:42, 1 October 2007 (EDT)

  • I don't think you should change it and before you create an article about Viral Infection, let others get their two cents out.--The Empath 21:59, 1 October 2007 (EDT)
  • I don't know where the idea of "viral infection" came from. Where's the source saying it has anything to do with a virus? (Admin 22:30, 1 October 2007 (EDT))
  • Sure as hell wasn't her staring at the guy, and everyone else is saying virus.--DarkPhoenix 22:32, 1 October 2007 (EDT)
    • The graphic novel suggested that it might be a virus, but it wasn't a definitive id, so yeah, we can't use that as confirmation.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:12, 1 October 2007 (EDT)
    • We have no idea of how the power works, just what it does. The name should not imply that we do know how it works. Is it viral? Is it toxic? Is it transmitted through the air? Is she mentally affecting other people's biochemistry? We just don't know.--Hardvice (talk) 23:40, 1 October 2007 (EDT)
  • Stigmapathy - Stigmata is what the appearance of her power is. Seeing how shes crying some black murky type blood. Unless its just nighttime and it just looks black. Just noting that Dania confirms that Maya and Alejandro are in fact supposed to be Dominican in her TVGuide interview. That's good ... it's been bothering me that we had that listed (along with the twin thing) without any real reliable confirmation, and now both are pretty well confirmed. Still, it's a little weird that, according to Hana's newspaper cuttings, they crossed south into Colombia and then worked their way through Central America if they're in such a hurry to get to New York, but hey ... we don't have the whole story yet.--Hardvice (talk) 21:56, 2 October 2007 (EDT)

  • My best guess is that they went deep in Colombia either to find a witch doctor or in an effort to get as far away from civilization as possible, but just a guess.--MiamiVolts (talk) 16:29, 7 October 2007 (EDT)
  • Episode eight. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:06, 7 October 2007 (EDT)

We've seen the power but no results

I'm not saying name it yet but to avoid continuous argument I'm going to sum everything up. We've seen Maya's power. We're not sure how it works but it does involve poisoning yadiyada. We are not sure of how this poisoning occurs or if it actually is poisoning! So until Mohinder or one of the writers give us a clue of her power we should waste our finger energy on thinking of name or not thinking of one... But I think we should ask Joe Coleite or something. Nuff saidJason Garrick 23:08, 13 October 2007 (EDT)

  • Yes, exactly. We'll probably get bits and pieces as the season progresses. We may encounter different explanations or theories (we already have one--that she's cursed--but that's not really the most likely option). But chances are good we'll eventually have a pretty decent idea what she does and how it works.--Hardvice (talk) 23:37, 13 October 2007 (EDT)

Small comment from Season 1 may elucidate Maya's power...

Although I don't consider myself an encyclopedia of Heroes knowledge, I distinctly remember a sound clip from Season 1 that easily explains Maya's power. In the last, or second to last, episode of Season 1 either the Narrator or Dr. Suresh starts making mention of powers and heroes that haven't made appearances yet. One of those powers was described something like "we've gotten word of a mysterious occurrence that left over 20 school children inexplicably left dead... all of the oxygen completely sucked out of the air."

Now, I wish I could go back and find this exact quote, but I'm just not sure where it appeared. It may have even been in a promo or summary clip. Either way, I know it was aired, and I'm sure someone else has a recollection of it and can probably locate it.

During Season 2 when Maya's character first appeared, I remembered the "oxygen deprivation" clip from Season 1 and I've always just assumed that was her power. If you look closely at how victims of her power react, they always clutch their throats and collapse within seconds. Sure, it could be a poison, but the "oxygen deprivation" theory works here as well. The only thing it doesn't explain is the "black tears," but that may be for cinematic effect.

Hope this helps. --DallasK 16:22, 21 November 2007 (EDT)

"FUTURE NATHAN": In Santa Cruz, a boy somehow sucked all the oxygen out of the air. Suffocated his entire middle school.
Probably not a direct reference to Maya, since it's five years in the future and an American boy. I suppose it's a possible explanation for her power, but it doesn't explain why Alejandro is immune (preumably, he breathes). Also, Tim Kring has refered to her power as the emission of a plague in the episode commentary.--Hardvice (talk) 16:31, 21 November 2007 (EST)

A question

What would happen if Sylar took Mayas ability and Peter came into contact with Alejandro and absorbed his? IIRC Sylar doesn't know Alejandro has a power so he may not kill him. Or what If Sylar and Peter ended up having both powers? Would they be able to have total control over both powers? Meatydoughnut 16:12, 22 November 2007 (EST)

I like they wy the writers wrote her out

As much A I don't like Maya, it's refreshing to see a character written out but not killed off. Normally when the a character no longer is needed in the story the writers just kill them off or just never mention the again (ex: West, Monica, etc) I liked how they had the character move away for a legitimate reason. I know that shes supposed to appear in Duel, and may die in that episode, but I kind of hope she doesn't because it will be the first time a character was written out this way.--Cairoi 15:11, 10 December 2008 (EST)

  • I do not want to make any enemies here, and it’s probably not the smartest thing to say that I dislike a character on her own page, but I really don’t like Maya. Until she is killed off, I will have this irrational fear of her returning. In fact, she probably will return. (I just hope that when she does, she does not reveal that she is pregnant with Mohinder’s child) Please die, Maya. --Mohinder613 (my talk page) 22:56, 19 January 2009 (EST)

          • The dislike for Maya is largely due to her thankless storyline, if she had been introduced as a just recruited for the Company, like Donna Dunlap, the public opinion on her would be very different. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 09:21, 19 January 2009 (EST)
    • I just like to be careful about how I word my discussions. I didn’t want to start an argument. Like all fictional characters and elements Maya was created for a purpose. Fan criticism is vital for the character’s evolution, though I still believe that when all creators flesh out a character they have a precise plan of who that character is mentally, emotionally, and physically. Heroes is such a remarkable show because people can relate to one or many of the characters. I can personally relate to Mohinder in an overall personality. While it is clear that many people do not like Maya, there are many people who do. But then again, she is just a fictional character, and maybe I’m just reading into it too much. I liked Maya’s character when she was first introduced, but I feel her storylines have ever since gone downhill. There’s no other character I really dislike, but of course I like some better than others. --Mohinder613 (my talk page) 22:56, 19 January 2009 (EST)
  • More like how cleverly the writers wrote her into standby. Her character could make a comeback with her powers back, as being Heroes anything can happen. Like every character, they each have a unique way of showing their powers through symbolism. Like the Curandera telling that her that she can't be cured and she has something black "enough to kill the devil". This may leave a door open up for her as this may suggest that Arthur may not have completely taken her ability away. The devil could be referring to Samuel of the carnival as Hiro called him the devil once I believe, and maybe she may be the one that saves the world from Samuel's wrath? Also, Maya being shot and falling on the painting of the explosion in Isaac's apartment before being revived by Claire's blood. Being symbolic of Maya causing the death of thousands of people and maybe saving them if she has the right tools? And yes, I am a fan of Maya and feel real gutted about all that has happen to her! We also saw development in her controlling her power and maybe one day see her powers being able to direct to exactly one group of people! --DoctorStrange 08:56, 23 April 2010 (EDT)

  • My problem isn't with Maya herself, is with the thankless plot she was given and the way she was developed. IceGhost78 mayas crap, they couldnt even work her storyline into the show, instead when they introduce her they just randomly went to a story about two mexicans trying to come into america, i cant beleve this dead weight is still around in Libertard, just kill her and bring back adam is what i say

As I said, Maya just had the bad luck of being put in a weak storyline, that doesn't mean she's a bad character, it means that the writers weren't able to give her a proper development, remember that she was going to be the cure for the Shanti virus, and quit complaining about Adam already, the only way he could possibly appear without ruining the consistency of the show is in flashbacks. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 14:37, 24 April 2009 (EDT)

IceGhost78 im not complaining youre making excuses for maya, she was never a good character and never will be a good character

I'm not making excuses, I agree, Maya's character in season two was hell, I'm just saying that given a better storyline, her character would have been much more interesting, it's matter of proper writing, you're the one who just decided to hate her and say she'd be a terrible character no matter what. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 20:04, 26 April 2009 (EDT)

IceGhost78 but thats what makes a character good, the storyline behind them. if you mean by a hot latina chick with the power to absorb a world ending virus, then yes, but if you mean a random mexican who is just abused for other peoples uses then no

The thing is, if the writers decide to bring her back, they'll have to be very careful on how they right her, what they need to do if they bring her back is restore her ability and give her a new personality, make her more Tracy like, hell, make her more Jessica like and Maya could be rescued from the depths of bad character writing. I personaly love Maya and feel that she shouldn't change at all (personality-wise)! Some of you shouldn't speak to soon as we may actually see her return in the near future with a big plot line twisting around her! Look at my points here--DoctorStrange 09:01, 23 April 2010 (EDT)

Was a promising character and still could be

There was so much they could do with this character but they just gave up. She was meant to be the Big Damn Hero if the virus plot had continued but it wasn't and the reason she was introduced was never fulfilled. The character has a spine, she’s got tremendous determination, they just needed to give her a purpose. Personally I thought that would have been going after Sylar, after what he did to her, and/or joining The Company. The writers thought it was a better idea to turn her into a sex object and then make her immobile/speechless until she got to leave. Nice way to treat one of the only female regulars of colour left on Heroes.

She’s in contact with Rebel, according to a GN, and appears to be slightly different. More angry, which is understandable after everything she went through. Maybe she could be helping him to get the specials to safety? They could tie her back in with this. That’s if Dania would ever come back to this show of course…

They can put her in touch with Matt Jr., if you can ignore the "I hate my ability" part, and factor in the hunt aspect, she could make some use of her ability, for protection, and develop it in the many ways it's been said she can. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 21:09, 31 March 2009 (EDT)

I've thought about that to! She could use it to protect and if it evolved to the level it was meant to: curing virus/diseases on a huge scale, it could be very beneficial and she could start to see it as something worthwhile. A way to make amends like she wished. I’d still like to know what would happen if she saw Sylar again, you never got a hint at what she was feeling in vol3, about her dead twin etc. Needs resolution.

Maybe HRG and Angela will track her down and recruit her to their new company!I really want her to come back, there is so much they could do with her... I at least want to see what happened to her, last we saw she was hiding in a room full of agents...--Skullman1392 01:43, 13 May 2009 (EDT)

That's an awesome idea about her being recruited! She even sympathised with the Company, that they catch dangerous people like Sylar. I'd love it if she came back but I fear that they'll just treat her bad again and just use her as a sex object. There's many directions they could go with her character but I don’t think they care, which is sad.

Season Three summary

Should she have a Season Three summary page?

  • I think she should have season summaries on her page... her, Adam, and Monica are the only main characters with episode by episode summaries rather than season summaries. --Skullman1392 22:44, 14 October 2009 (EDT)
    • I don't think she needs one. She barely appeared in the third season, and she shows no promise of returning. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:56, 14 October 2009 (EDT)
      • Don't you think one for at least the second season would be good? And don't mention the number of episodes she was in, season 2 was less than half the lengths of all the other seasons. --Skullman1392 18:46, 15 October 2009 (EDT)
        • No, I don't think Maya's second season history needs to be archived. I'd like to mention the number of episodes since that's really the crux of my opinion. There are only nine entries from the second season. There are ten from the third season. In my opinion (since you asked), the histories are not taking up very much room on the page, and neither is begging to be archived. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:36, 15 October 2009 (EDT)
          • Well, nine out of 11 episodes is a lot... I just REALLY like the summaries, if you haven't been able to tell already lol --Skullman1392 16:41, 16 October 2009 (EDT)

Ability absorption

didnt she absorb Alejandro's ability to control her own?

  • No, her ability developed more so she had more control over it, just like Matt's evolved to include mind control or Tracy's to include control over water. --Skullman1392 01:54, 2 August 2009 (EDT)

Maya's quotes aren't in Spanish, like Alejandro's... Green.gif AltesUTC CH
