Japanese Names

• Taro translates to "太郎", a common Japanese surname.
• Jiro translates to "次郎".
• Dai seems to be a Chinese surname instead of a Japanese one. In Japanese, dai means big.
• In the movie "Nankyoku Monogatari", Taro and Jiro was the two dog that survived the expedition.
• Oni is the Japanese equivalent of demon.

• Probably not related, but the premise of this novel reminds me of the Biblical story (1 Kings 3:16-28) of two women who both claimed a newborn baby, and took the dispute to King Solomon; who draw a sword and feigning to solve the squabble by cutting the baby in half. The true mother yelled "no", let the other woman have it; to spare the child's life; and Solomon then knew who the truth mother was. --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 02/12/2008 10:37 (EST)
• Another parallel I saw, from Japanese culture, was the two men, one named Jiro, jockeying for position after the founder of the company died. This similar even happened in the world of Japanese Karate; when the Wado Ryu Founder, and head of all Japanese Karate, Hironori Otsuka died at the age of 90 in 1982, and his son Jiro and his senior students jockied for position over who would take over the Wado Karate Organization. What resulted was a split and fracture, with the Son Jiro removing some members from the whole, and the senior students keeping the other students; and something that was once united and whole becoming fractured and split on the death of the founder. Japanese followers of Heroes will be familiar with this parallel because of their familiarity with Wado Ryu Karate in ways that Americans will not be. --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 02/12/2008 10:37 (EST)

• I don't see what good it does to point out NBC's mistakes on our main page. Even with the sic link, it still seems unnecessarily dogmatic to me. A note on the GN's page is fine, but to muck up our front page seems silly. The point shouldn't be to copy something exactly, but to get the content across. I don't see any point in keeping a spelling mistake, at least for the week that it's included on the main page. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:41, 12 February 2008 (EST)

    • With Mossad and Gitelman, which are both transliterations of Hebrew words. Those words don't exist in English (though "Mossad" has a spelling which is more accepted over others) and hence don't have English spellings. Other times we've fixed punctuation and other spelling mistakes. I don't think we need to hold ourselves to a rigid standard of copying something exactly even if has a spelling mistake. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:48, 12 February 2008 (EST)

• Agree. There's also some great info at Sword of Oni#Trivia you added. Unless we get another character from there or it's mentioned in some other way, I don't think we need the article. Besides, I'd rather see places like Sakashita or Charlottesville, VA get articles first.
