Theories

Theory Citations Notes
Nathan's power is aerokinesis, or the ability to control air. None. + This would explain how he flies (propelling himself by riding on air currents), how he protects himself during flight (surrounding himself with a condensed air force field), and how he heard Peter tell Claire, "there is no other way" (How to Stop an Exploding Man). Nathan amplifies the sound waves and carries them to his ears.

If Nathan's power is aerokinesis, then he might be able to do more than fly. He may also be able to control air to create focused blasts of wind, keep the air around him warm or cool, and direct air currents that carry sounds to his ears.
+ With this, he could have protected himself from the radioactive blast when he sent Peter into the sky.

- Nathan was severely scarred from the explosion in Four Months Ago.
+ That was a pretty huge explosion. Nathan's injuries aren't that terrible compared to actually being caught in the explosion.
It is possible that Nathan hasn't considered that application of his power, and thus was not shielding himself at the time.
- The temperature of a nuclear fireball is over 10 million degrees, which would have heated such a shield to the point where it provided no protection. It's more likely that after Nathan dropped Peter, Peter quickly flew as far as he could before exploding, just far enough to not kill Nathan.

+ This could explain how he appears to be able to breathe normally even at higher altitudes.

- It appears as though most of his flying is done near the ground, no higher than a few thousand feet, which, in most cases, isn't high enough to largely affect a person's ability to breathe.

- It is unlikely condensed air would stop a nuclear blast of that size. Also Elle referred to West as the "flying boy" (he has the same power as Nathan).

+ Hiro refers to Nathan as the "flying man". Elle could merely be unaware of this secondary function, or she could merely be using the phrase "flying boy" colloquially. West's ability could also be different than Nathan's.
Nathan and Peter Petrelli are brothers with Hiro Nakamura. Hiro's biological mother may actually be Angela Petrelli, since we know she slept with Kaito Nakamura. (Lizards) - Ishi loved Hiro too much for him to be the fruit of an extramarital affair.

- She would know if Hiro wasn't her son. She wouldn't have been pregnant with him if she wasn't.

Gerald Dickinson was murdered so that Nathan could take his Senate seat. None. + The Company has been trying to ensure Nathan takes a position of power. This is likely still the plan.
Sylar will kill Nathan and take his ability. In a possible future Sylar had acquired Nathan's ability. Many aspects of that future are still coming true, like Sylar killing Candice (though not taking her ability). + Sylar would likely see killing Nathan as a good way of getting at Peter.

- Sylar has learned how to take abilities without killing people.

+ He prefers to kill people.

- In the latest possible future, Sylar stops killing people, with Nathan still alive.

+ In that future, Sylar still thinks that he is a Petrelli. He is already on a different path.
Nathan will eventually die permanently. None. + In every single alternate future (Explosion, Outbreak, Exposed), Future Nathan has died.

+ Nathan does seem to be quite prone to accidents and attempts on his life (hit-and-run six months before the series started, injuries at the end of volume one, assassination attempt at the end of volume two). It's probably only a matter of time before he is unsuccessful at escaping }death.
+ Everyone will eventually die permanently.

It goes without saying this theory indicates a plot-affecting death...
Adam would have lived forever (had Arthur not taken his ability). Same goes for with Claire and Sylar.

- Just because Nathan died in the alternate futures doesn't mean he will die in every future.

+ Try to note that he has died in every future so far.
Nathan is not blood related to Peter. None. + Peter and Arthur have similar powers.

+ Peter was born with abilities, Nathan was not.

- Nathan's ability could have been taken from him by Arthur.
Nathan was actually born with a power, but Arthur detected it before anyone else and (for whatever reason) stole it. None. + Based on the powered families in the show, more often than not, two people with powers appear to produce a child with powers.

+ Nathan could have had a very dangerous ability which could destroy Arthur.

Nathan is a villain. None. - Nathan has, on many occasions, gone against what he believes is evil, even if it is at the last moment.
+ He was still tempted by Linderman and Angela. He could still go evil.

In the Exposed Future, Nathan's intentions are unclear.
+ Nathan wants the government to hunt evolved humans. (Dual)

Nathan will be the main villain in Volume 4. None. + Nathan seemed to be leaning toward villainy with his words to Peter about taking power.

+ Nathan has often been on the cusp of being a villain.
+ Nathan wants the government to hunt evolved humans. (Dual)

Nathan became a villain as a result of his encounter with Samedi. None. + Samedi, and his followers, clearly thought of him as a god, and Nathan might have coveted that worship.
Arthur might have wanted Nathan to fancy himself as a god because he might have be more inclined to work with Arthur if he felt that way. After all, many of the founders, and Adam, seem to have viewed themselves in that way. Arthur might have used Samedi to that end.
The Haitian could not prevent Nathan from flying away because he can not stop synthetic abilities. None. - The Haitian may simply have been pretending to assist Noah Bennet but was actually preventing him from capturing Nathan since he is Angela Petrelli's son.
The sailor seen at the end of the graphic novel "Playing with Fire" looking at Meredith is Nathan. None. + Nathan served as a U.S. Navy pilot, according to votepetrelli.com.

+ If you follow the years correctly, Meredith and Nathan would have met about the time of this graphic novel.

Nathan is the son of Maury. None. + Peter and Arthur have similar powers.
- That doesn't mean that Nathan is Maury's son. It would be as likely as Angela being Maury's sister.
+ Matt has the same power as his father.
Arthur also displays this ability.
- Nathan does not.
Nathan's ability could have been taken from him by Arthur.
Nathan was given a synthetic ability. Arthur could have felt bad about stealing his ability and gave him a new one.

+ Angela has alluded to have cheated on Arthur before.

- Nothing has been confirmed or even hinted.
Nathan will want to make sure his proposed government "hunt" for evolved humans is kept secret from the public. Nathan will turn against his own people and establish himself as a dictator in another alternative future. He will also have the government force other nations to comply to the hunt or otherwise be invaded by the United States Army. None. + It seems that Nathan does not want the public to find out about the hunt for evolved humans. Otherwise, it may stir controversy and public discontent. Should anyone find out or express opposing views, Nathan may try and silence them. And since the formula was destroyed by his brother Peter, who is also an evolved human, he decided to turn against his own people as revenge.

+ The ending of Dual/beginning of Volume Four: Fugitives, shows Nathan talking to the president about the evolved humans, thus proving that he decided to turn again his own kind.

Nathan is a part of the President's cabinet. The President seemed to know him well. + The President seemed very trusting of Nathan's information. If he was just a senator that he barely knew, why would he trust Nathan's word? If this is a president that was President throughout Heroes' time on television, maybe one of his cabinet members died and Nathan was his/her replacement.
Nathan's warning the President about evolved humans without lumping himself in with them may be a reference to how Adolf Hitler wanted to eliminate Jewish people while being part Jewish himself. The end of Dual. + There is symbolism in the show.
- This doesn't mean that everything has to be symbolic or metaphorical in the show.
+ Nathan would not turn himself in nor his mother or Claire.
Surprising that Nathan would turn in Micah, he was friends with Niki and could relate to her so he may actually show no mercy besides his own family, but then again that's just selfish.
- A one-night stand hardly constitutes a friendship.

+ Nathan could be considered "part evolved human" as he has synthetic abilities.
- There hasn't been any definitive, conclusive evidence that Hitler had indeed Jewish heritage.

Nathan and Niki did have common grounds which they both knew, besides sleeping with eachother: he wouldn't want to put his kids through something like that, yet he's willing to do it to another child who has control over their ability? No mercy unless blood related to him, otherwise he'd feel guilty.
- Nathan can't possibly have an attachment to Claire the same way he has for his boys, him turning Micah in says it pretty clear: he'll turn anyone who's not his family, regardless of any connection to him.
((minus)) Nathan was willing to imprison Peter after it became clear that he couldn't manipulate Peter anymore. At this point, all bets may be off about what Nathan will or won't do.
Nathan will be killed in Volume Four. None. + Nathan betrayed every evolved human by exposing their existence to the President. Evolved humans may want revenge.

+ He could also be killed by Danko when he finds that he's one of "them".

Nathan was possessed by Arthur Petrelli at the end of Volume 3, and since then Arthur has been in control of Nathan's body. There is a known body insertion ability. It is possible Arthur already has this ability. + Arthur Petrelli's body disappeared during "Dual" while he was "dead," and Nathan was unconscious in the same room. This indicates that Arthur could have possibly survived the gunshot wound with one of his healing abilities and survived by taking over Nathan's body.
Nathan's sudden change in character could also be explained by possession.
- Nathan displayed a change in character before Arthur's death, it happened when Samedi was defeated in Haiti.
Nathan didn't display a change in character then. After Samedi was defeated he just started to think that giving people abilities is a good idea, in order to prevent such villains as Samedi. But he definitely displayed a change in character after Arthur died. The change in character may have happened because Arthur possessed his body. But also because Nathan was always in search of being in the "ruling class" and his megalomania-cum-fear of powers plus his strong ego may have hindered his good side, still latent in him. We still don't know what happened during the three weeks, from the end of volume three to the start of volume four where Nathan speaks with the president.
Nathan has rounded up the heroes to isolate them in a way similar to how the writers wanted the Shanti virus to get Primatech under quarantine. Alternatively, Nathan is trying to use the government like The Company, because The Company was effectively destroyed. Nathan discusses the plan with Angela in Trust and Blood, who says she was pushed aside and Nathan replaced her with the government. + He doesn't allow Danko to kill anyone, working with Noah to make sure none of the heroes die.
Except Sylar.
Nathan's ability is in fact ability replication, but he needs to be injected with ability's donor blood. None. + Nathan has received Adam's blood and later was able to heal from Future Peter's shot.
- This has been confirmed as a plain medical miracle, no abilities involved.

+ Arthur and Peter Petrelli are able to somehow replicate abilities.

- Nathan's ability is synthetic, it makes sense for his ability to be different.
+ Peter's new synthetic ability is very alike to the original one.

+ West was captured from the company so he could be the original donor of fight.

- Nathan had no involvement with the Company affairs after being injected with the formula, at least until after manifesting his ability.
+ Arthur, Angela and Linderman, Company´s founders, had all stated that Nathan had a role to play in their plans.
- Doesn't mean he had an ability, they could want someone with political power.
+ If that is so, why did the company had injected him in the first place? It's all part of the same plan.
- Not really, they also injected Niki, Tracy and Barbara, does this mean they also have ability replication through blood? Not at all.
+ When Suresh developed his formula he said to Maya that with each person's blood chemistry, it would mean individual powers. This kind of formula maybe could just enable a potential ability that's already in the patient's DNA.

- So far we saw at most two evolved humans from one family possessing the same or similar ability - Maury and Matt (Matt's son has an ability different from telepathy), Meredith and Flint (Meredith's daughter, Claire, has an ability different from pyrokinesis). The same may apply to Petrelli family.

Nathan will change sides are start trying to protect evolved humans. None. + The fact that Danko views evolved humans as animals seems to be very disturbing to Nathan.

+ Danko is becoming very suspicious of Nathan, if he realizes the truth it may force Nathan to go on the run.

+ Danko now knows Nathan can fly.

+ The President has started to overrule Nathan in the hunt for evolved humans, even classifying evolved humans as "terrorists", this may cause Nathan to loose faith in the government's ability to handle the situation.

Sylar will kill Nathan, then use his shapeshifting ability to impersonate him. None. + It would parallel the events of "Five Years Gone".

+ Danko would likely encourage Sylar to target Nathan.
+ Sylar would certainly enjoy Nathan's ability.
+ It would the best way for Danko to manipulate the evolved human operation.

- Not really, by now Nathan is a target as well, he no longer has his credibility.
+ Once Danko gets killed and his operation cancelled, Nathan may re-assume his place in Senate. This will be the best opportunity for Sylar to fight for power.

Assuming Danko gets killed.

Peter healed Nathan's gunshot wound by using Ishi Nakamura's ability None. + Peter kissed Nathan's forehead in The Second Coming like Ishi does when she uses her ability.
