Name Change Request
- Admin, could you remove the 14 from my name? Thanks!-- Japanimation My Talk 22:40, 1 December 2007 (EST)
- Done. (Admin 22:47, 1 December 2007 (EST))
- Much appreciated-- Japanimation My Talk 22:49, 1 December 2007 (EST)
- What, you're not 14 anymore? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:49, 1 December 2007 (EST)
Name Changes
I'm curious about the technicalities involved in name changes. After you change names, it looks like you just move the user pages and user talk pages to the new username. But the old pages, which now contain redirects, aren't deleted. Am I right to assume that you block new users from taking the old username after moves? I'm not considering a name change atm, but I don't want there to be potential db holes if this continues to be an ongoing thing.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:18, 1 December 2007 (EST)
- The old redirects will be deleted, I'm just leaving them temporarily until Japanimation changes all the old links over to his new name. As part of the name change process the requestor needs to be willing to update all the links to their old name so that it's all cleared out in case someone else registers it in the future. I forgot to point this out explicitly before this particular name change, but I don't think there will be a problem. (Admin 23:21, 1 December 2007 (EST))
- That can be a lot of updates for some users. Japanimation is relatively new, so it's not that big of a problem. Maybe you can check into whether the bot could help with that for future changes. Just a thought.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:30, 1 December 2007 (EST)
- It can't do it currently, but in time as I add more functionality it may be able to. It's a good idea. (Admin 23:32, 1 December 2007 (EST))

Bot request (maybe)
- Take a look at User:Hardvice/Guest_stars. We're ready to go with autoportals for minor characters except for one thing: lots of the characters articles don't have
|sortname=set. Is it possible to have the bot set |sortname= to PAGENAME for all of the articles which don't have a sortname? Does it matter that some have the variable, but leave it blank, while others don't have the variable at all? Can it be done in two passes if that does matter? Are we better off doing it by hand?--Hardvice (talk) 05:25, 2 December 2007 (EST)- Shouldn't be a problem. I should be able to work on it sometime Sunday if I have time. (Admin 05:28, 2 December 2007 (EST))
- Rock solid.--Hardvice (talk) 05:46, 2 December 2007 (EST)
- Is there one particular category that you need the sortname added to? (Admin 13:26, 2 December 2007 (EST))
- It'd be good for all characters. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:58, 2 December 2007 (EST)
- I mean which category tag for articles should I modify and add the sortname to? Does it have to be added to all categories that those pages have defined or just one specific category? (Admin 16:45, 2 December 2007 (EST))
- I don't think I understand what a category tag is or what you mean by "all categories that those pages have defined". What needs to happen, as far as I understand, is that any article in Category:Characters that does not have
|sortname=defined in their character box should be defined as|sortname={{PAGENAME}}. I hope that helps. If that's still not what you're looking for, I'll let Hardvice respond. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:12, 2 December 2007 (EST)- That's it on the nose, though we can probably get away with just Category:Minor Characters. All the others already have sortnames. But yeah, what we need is a variable in the infobox, not a sort added to a category link.--Hardvice (talk) 18:15, 2 December 2007 (EST)
- Ah, ok, I see now. (Admin 18:17, 2 December 2007 (EST))

Hello again :)
Hey Admin, remember me? The Hebrew-version guy? :P We haven't talked for a while, although I do read here everyday. I haven't given up on the Hebrew Wiki, and I'm planning on bringing it back to life during the break.
I saw that you opened a wiki for the Bionic Woman, with the same design and everything. I thought to myself, would it be possible for you to open a wiki for Chuck, a great TV show, on your server, with the same design as HeroesWiki and The Bionic Woman.
Thanks,
Obi-Dan Kenobi 13:37, 2 December 2007 (EST)
- Sorry to bug you, I just wanted to ask some questions regarding the Hebrew version. When I try to write a paragraph, the text will appear below the infobox, instead of appearing next to it. Any solutions?
And, also, any news about the Chuck wiki? Obi-Dan Kenobi 19:35, 5 December 2007 (EST)

Quite a few name changes
Radiokinesis (induce radioactivity) Florakinesis (plant control) Cryokinesis (freezing) Spontaneous Regeneration (Rapid cell regeneration) Omnilinguality (Omnilingualism) Self-Duplication (replication) Electrokinesis (lightning) Emotion Manipulation (bliss and horror)
i hate to be a bitch but i kinda found some 'better' names for some of the powers. the current names are in brackets
thanks, ash--Ashwilson12 (talk) 16:18, 2 December 2007 (EST)
- Unfortunately, per our help:naming conventions, it's no to all. Induced radioactivity, freezing, rapid cell regeneration, replication, bliss and horror, and lightning all come from canon or near-canon soruces, which trumps any made-up names. "Florakinesis" literally means "flower movement". "Omnilinguality" is just a very awkward form of "omnilingualism", which follows the pattern of real words like "bilingualism".--Hardvice (talk) 16:21, 2 December 2007 (EST)
- ah well :D fair enough--Ashwilson12 (talk) 16:23, 2 December 2007 (EST)
Email...
...check it. Sorry I called you the "money guy at Heroes Wiki", but I didn't know whether or not you'd want me to give out your name. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:32, 4 December 2007 (EST)
- A reasonable decision. :) You can give out my first name to anyone in the future, it's on my user page afterall. (Admin 23:43, 4 December 2007 (EST))
- Never noticed it there. Hmm. Thanks. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:55, 4 December 2007 (EST)
Comparing Notes
- Dear Brian:
- We're the guys that run Battlestar Wiki, amongst other things. As a fellow independent wiki operator (we also ended up turning down wikia), we were wondering if you'd talk with us. It looks like our sites run on similar models, and we'd be interested in comparing notes.
- In particular, we're having issues handling load during peak usage. Viewing is fine, but we end up having to lock down key articles right after episodes air to prevent edit conflicts from bringing down the server(s). While the traffic of such surges usually brings in enough to sustain the cost of our current two servers, the slow times (between seasons and episodes) often end up coming out of Joe's (our founder) pockets, and so it's hard to justify adding more servers into the equation. Given your background and experience, we were hoping you might have a few ideas.
- This was just an overview given my (limited) understanding of the technical operation side of the wiki. If you're interested in talking shop, you'd probably be better of dropping Joe a note at his user page or emailing him (joebeaudoin at joebeaudoin dot net) directly.
- Thanks for your time,
- Matt Williams
