Image rendering problem

  • Hey, when you have a moment, can you take a look at Paradox and Talk:Paradox? We've been having problems with some images showing up blank even when properly linked. So far, it's been reported on FF, IE6, and IE7, and clearing the browser cache doesn't help. If you follow the links, it's adding extra escape characters after the file extension. Any ideas what's going on?--Hardvice (talk) 16:20, 3 January 2007 (EST)
    • How about now? I just basically deleted and retyped the Image links in the gallery. When you clicked on the image it was going to Charlie_birthday_1.jpg but then it had some ASCII hex after it for some reason so it didnt find the filename, but it didn't show up when editing the page. Not sure what the deal was, but it seems to work now. (Admin 16:28, 3 January 2007 (EST))

Meta: StringFunctions

  • Admin, I noticed that there are a number of string functions that are available for parsing. They are not installed by default, but they would allow substring manipulations. Do you think the community would be interested in these? I can think of a few parser tricks to check if a template variable is a Ref or not by checking if the string begins with [[ ... but I don't know what kind of risks adding string parsing would add to your server. --Orne 17:11, 4 January 2007 (EST)
    • I'll take a look at the extension and test it out. If it looks good, I can add it. (Admin 17:38, 4 January 2007 (EST))

Episodes to Chapters

  • Shouldn't we Rename All the Episodes to Chapters cause that is the Term that the Show uses. ~ ~ ~ ~ Red = 22:34, 4 January 2007 (EST)
    • It's an interesting idea. Personally I prefer the episode approach (in terms of the namespace name) since it's more general and I'd be afraid of them doing something along the lines of splitting the series into different "books" and then they'd start reusing chapter numbers. Maybe it could be added to the title field of the episode sidebar? Would be good to get some more feedback on this from others here before adding it. (Admin 22:43, 4 January 2007 (EST))
      • I like the idea, but I agree with your concern, Admin, that things might change along the way. I don't think it's necessary to add the title field, since the chapter number is already on the page (in the form of the episode title screencaps). But I'm not opposed. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:21, 4 January 2007 (EST)
        • Yeah, I'm on the fence as to the value. I think we include an image of the chapter and episode name in every episode already anyway, right? So it might be superfluous. (Admin 23:22, 4 January 2007 (EST))
          • Easy! this is to be Volume one for the 1st Season. And it is a Canon ~ ~ ~ ~ Red = 23:38, 4 January 2007 (EST)
      • Seems like more trouble than it's worth. We have about nine billion links to articles in the Episode: namespace. Considering a lot of them are to redirects, we'd have a ton of broken redirects and not much to show for it.--Hardvice (talk) 23:56, 4 January 2007 (EST)
      • Also, all of the links are set to exclude the namespace anyway, either by piping or by redirect. So even if we went to all the trouble of changing every link to "Episode:Genesis" to "Chapter:Genesis", it'd still display as Genesis. Lots of work, no gain.--Hardvice (talk) 02:09, 5 January 2007 (EST)

IMDb Images

Ok, my brain isn't working properly. Is there a way to get a list of images in Category:Cast and Crew Portraits that don't have {{image-imdb}} on them? I've already searched for variations of "IMDB" and tagged 'em, and cleaned out Category:Uncredited Images, but it seems like there are probably more. I'll have to go through all the images manually now, right, or am I forgetting something?--Hardvice (talk) 01:42, 7 January 2007 (EST)

Short of writing a bot, I'm not sure of a good way of doing it automatically. I should just take the time and get up to speed on writing bots so I can just automate things like this. (Admin 01:47, 7 January 2007 (EST))
No worries. There are only about a hundred images, and most of them have already been checked, so it shouldn't be too bad. But as the cat links above testify, my brain is just not quite right tonight, so I thought I'd ask.--Hardvice (talk) 01:52, 7 January 2007 (EST)

Edits not registering on "Recent changes"

Hey, Admin. I noticed on the History page of Mohinder's taxi license that the page was created at 16:46, 10 January 2007 by Cuardin. For some reason, this is not showing up anywhere on my "Recent changes" page. I've tried fiddling with the show/hide options, and doing everything I know. I'm afraid I might be missing other edits as well. Any thoughts, or is this just a freak thing? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:40, 10 January 2007 (EST)

  • It's because I moved it ... it was "Mohinders Taxi License". Since it was misspelled, I deleted the resulting redirect. Since I deleted it, the creation doesn't show up in RC. Totally normal.--Hardvice (talk) 23:55, 10 January 2007 (EST)
    • But every other time something has been deleted, the original creation still showed up as a red link, and then the deletion appears later on. Weird. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:24, 11 January 2007 (EST)

Re: Affectations on HRG's Glasses

  • thank you Admin, for removing my post on The Symbol page. I just got a look at a recording from an HD source on a subsequent episode (10) and found that the details on the accents I noted were probably just lighting effects crossed with a VHS recording. You saved me the trouble of removing them. Besides It was pointed out to me that if Doctor Chandra Sharesh saw the symbol of his discovery and the cover of Accelerating Evolution on the glasses of HRG/Mr. Bennet, he would have probably pointied it out (Episode 10, Six Months Back).

Hey there! Didn't realise you were online or I'd have asked you directly about the MW upgrade. Thanks for the info ... that net change counter is a neat trick. Also, when you get a chance, can you take a look at Template talk:Character box? Orne seems to have come up with a really clever use for the StringFunctions extension. I don't know much about the MediaWiki backend, so I'm really not sure how well it will work, but it's worth a thought.--Hardvice (talk) 00:27, 17 January 2007 (EST)

The extenstion looks fairly innocuous... I'll load it up onto my staging site and if it doesn't appear to break anything deploy it here shortly. (Admin 00:30, 17 January 2007 (EST))
Ok, it's available here now. (Admin 00:36, 17 January 2007 (EST))
It works perfectly. That turned a huge project into a couple of template changes. Awesome!--Hardvice (talk) 01:15, 17 January 2007 (EST)

Mark as Patrolled

  • You know the shortcut keys for things like Recent Changes (alt-shift-r) and Upload (alt-shift-u)? Is there any way to assign one to "Mark as patrolled" on the diff page? That would make life so, so easy. Between that and the close tab shortcut in FF we could patrol recent changes almost entirely mouse-free.--Hardvice (talk) 18:30, 24 January 2007 (EST)
    • Yeah, shouldn't be too hard. I'll check it out. (Admin 18:36, 24 January 2007 (EST))
      • You are the best.--Hardvice (talk) 18:40, 24 January 2007 (EST)
        • Ok, try alt-p now when viewing a diff and it will mark it as patrolled. If it doesn't work the first time, force a reload of the page. (Admin 20:29, 24 January 2007 (EST))
          • That works perfectly. And makes things a lot easier. Thanks. Incidentally, I didn't know about those shortcut keys - are there others? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:04, 24 January 2007 (EST)
            • Wikipedia has a list of them that should also work here. (Admin 22:07, 24 January 2007 (EST))

Why can't I see anything on that page? --Gargyloveswolfy 19:44, 25 January 2007 (EST)

Hmm... I'm not sure. It's coming up fine for me. It's blank for you I assume? Perhaps try clearing your browser cache or forcing a reload of the page and see if that helps. (Admin 19:47, 25 January 2007 (EST))
    • Clearing the browser's cache worked. Thank you!! --Gargyloveswolfy 19:52, 25 January 2007 (EST)

Removing info

  • Why did you remove what I just posted. It was relevant to the topic. --Pie-ro 20:54, 26 January 2007
    • Hi, Pie-ro. Check out the change summary I posted along with the undo along with the comment I added to the article's talk page. We're trying to keep all the articles as much like references as possible. The part I took out was basically "promoting" the article and made it look more like an advertisement than a reference article. (Admin 20:59, 26 January 2007 (EST))

Re: Hebrew site

Thanks. I took a small break because of school, but now I'm back. I have a group of Hebrew speakers fans who would love to help me. I hope that in a month the Hebrew Heroes-Wiki will be ready for weekly updates. Thanks again :) Obi-Dan Kenobi 21:59, 26 January 2007 (EST)

Authors of Changes and EMail Notifications

I have been getting notifications of changes to pages and the author when I go to the website is often different from the email and thus incorrect one way or another. It has also been missing some changes to my "my talk" page.

If there is another spot on the wiki I'm supposed to report a tech problem like this I don't know where it is.

--WolvenSpectre 11:23, 27 January 2007 (EST)

This is the right place to go. :) Thanks, WolvenSpectre, I'll check it out. (Admin 11:31, 27 January 2007 (EST))
When I changed "The EMail" back to "The email" in Theories I used the undo link, the next editor was Darc, it is likely WolvenSpectre did not get a notification of my undo. -Level 02:50, 28 January 2007 (EST)

In that case you are correct, but in several other cases I got users that er diffrent, no intermediate edits were listed when Ivisited the page, and once I recieved a notice for a Theory added by RyanGibsonStewart but I was the one who had seconds before just entered it. There were no changes listed. This seems to only happen with the Theories page.--WolvenSpectre 04:18, 28 January 2007 (EST) (PS I didn't save any of them, but I might be able to get them (the EMails) back... I will let you know)

Well I got another one that claims a user Carosel1039 had made some changes to the Theories page, and when I got there (instantly after recieving the EMail) it was telling me I made the changes, and I didn't. Where do you want me to send the EMail?--WolvenSpectre 09:24, 1 February 2007 (EST)

Heh. I didn't even see that. But the link to the talk page is a much better idea!--Hardvice (talk) 14:10, 30 January 2007 (EST)

Ad blocking

Do we have a lot of people blocking ads? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:04, 30 January 2007 (EST)

With Google Ads there isn't really a good way of telling. It was more of a preemptive request since I noticed some ad blockers automatically block all Google ads. I figured I'd put a request out there especially since perhaps some people don't realize that some of the ads can generate revenue even without being clicked. If people have the blocking turned on by default they might not even think about it so I wanted to ask them to please turn it off so they can help out. I figure it doesn't hurt to ask nicely.  :) (Admin 17:08, 30 January 2007 (EST))

Spelling Nazi

I gess that spel cheker is rilly comin in handie. :) — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:21, 9 February 2007 (EST)

  • You keep that up and you're going to break it! :) Yes, it's very useful. Though it would be a lot nicer if I could tell it to login to the wiki and actually make the edit automatically. Plus I wish I could ignore certain patterns. I don't need warnings that "Category:Something" is not an actual word. (Admin 22:24, 9 February 2007 (EST))
    • I also noticed that about half the spelling mistakes were from me...sorry! I have to upgrade to Firefox 2.0 one of these days so I can automatically check my spelling. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:42, 9 February 2007 (EST)
    • Out of curiosity, was that everything it picked up, or just part of it? I'll be amazed if that's all we had wrong. Of course, it's not going to help us with homophones...--Hardvice (talk) 23:31, 9 February 2007 (EST)
      • No, I got about half through the list. I'll get some more of them again soon. Yeah, it doesn't catch everything that could be wrong, but it's a good start. (Admin 23:36, 9 February 2007 (EST))
        • If that was about half, I'm still impressed. We're not such horrible spellers as I thought we were.-Hardvice (talk) 23:39, 9 February 2007 (EST)
      • More progress made. Still a bit left to go. Hopefully 1-2 more sweeps and we should be pretty well off for now. (Admin 04:00, 11 February 2007 (EST))

Hana Gitelman page and notes regarding email/IMs

If the following info is "canon"...

Then why is the content of the messages she has sent not canon? --Waffle Fan 03:01, 10 February 2007 (EST)

  • Hey, Waffle Fan. The main issue was that the info is already on, so it didn't need to be on Hana's article as well since there's already a link from her article to The smaller issue was that what occurs as part of Heroes 360 is not exactly canonical so it should only really be mentioned in character articles in the Notes or Trivia sections. The article is part of our documentation on Heroes 360 so it definitely belongs in there. (Admin 08:45, 10 February 2007 (EST))

MediaWiki Without Subdirectory?

This is the only MediaWiki site I've ever seen without the /index.php/ or /w/ or /wiki/ or whatever between the domain and the actual pages. How do you do it? --Sgtbenc 23:57, 17 February 2007

  • Magic! :) Actually, in this case it's for two reasons. First of all I have MediaWiki installed right in the document root, so there wouldn't be any subdirectories. Secondly I'm using mod_rewrite to redirect all requests that do not correspond to an actual file over to /index.php?title=PAGENAME. Along with a quick change to MediaWiki's config telling it how to format the links it displays on the wiki the magic is complete. :) Even if the wiki were in a subdirectory I could still use mod_rewrite to make it appear not to use subdirectories or index.php. I set it up this way because I like to keep the URLs small and simple. (Admin 00:04, 18 February 2007 (EST))
    • Using htaccess? When I have mine isntalled in the document root, I can still only get it down to appearing as a subdirectory with mod_rewrite. Here's my code:
 RewriteEngine on
 RewriteRule ^wiki/?(.*)$ /index.php?title=$1 [L,QSA]
 AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php

And of course I set up the settings correcty. Is there any chance you'd let me see yours? Sgtbenc 08:44, 18 February 2007 (EST)

  • How's this config work for you?
  RewriteEngine On
  RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
  RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
  RewriteRule ^(.+)$ /wiki/index.php?title=$1 [L,QSA]

--Admin 11:28, 18 February 2007 (EST)

    • Thanks a lot! This really helps my wikis out a lot. -Sgtbenc 11:57, 19 February 2007 (EST)

Angela Petrelli

Where did it say that Mother Petrelli first name is Angela?
~ ~ ~ ~ Red = 23:10, 17 February 2007 (EST)

  • Hmm... I'm not sure, it may have been information originally found at Wikipedia a long time ago. She's probably credited at the end of an episode somewhere, but I dont know which episode offhand. Hopefully someone else knows where the original mention of it came from. If you search Google you find a lot of Heroes results for Angela Petrelli, so I'm pretty sure it's accurate, I just don't know the exact source off the top of my head. (Admin 23:23, 17 February 2007 (EST))
    • Nope, nothing stated in the end credits.[1]

Page Restoration

Would it be any problem, if there is a way, to restore the unexpected synopsis while i leave a comment on its discussion about the details. I really wrote that synopsis on the fly and can't really remember the details that well. Next time I'll keep a keen eye out for specifics. When I started writing it i wasn't exactly sure of the details and wasn't very specific.

I am sure what i just wrote is really garbled but thanks for the suggestions. Japanimation 22:28, 19 February 2007 (EST)

Site Translation

I also have another idea. I am sure this has probably been stated a rather large amount of times but we should look for fluent bilinguals who enjoy this show and ask them if they can help with translation or establishment of a foreign language Heroes wiki. I beleive we already have an offer for Hebrew so we are well on our way. Japanimation 23:21, 19 February 2007 (EST)

Well I WAS a little harsh...

It's mainly the mistakes over inaccuracies, like lots of missing commas and mispellings and such, I fixed a bunch I saw... but one thing I did notice was "Peter managed to stop time", which I don't think happened, in fact we were discussing that earlier. I believe that was Telekinesis, since stopping time wouldn't cause them to fall to the ground. :P --Riddler 01:23, 20 February 2007 (EST)

  • I'll have to wait until NBC has it online to see it again... I coulda sworn I saw some movement other than Peter.--Riddler 01:30, 20 February 2007 (EST)

Section Edit links

I noticed that problem the other day. It's because the {{welcome}} template includes a section heading, increasing the section numbers by one when the page is displayed. However, if the template is included instead of substituted, the actual section numbers are all -1 from the displayed links. One more reason to SUBST the welcome message, IMHO.--Hardvice (talk) 02:08, 20 February 2007 (EST)

  • Well, then, that settles it for me. I'll subst from now on -- I hate that section edit problem. Thanks. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 02:14, 20 February 2007 (EST)

I am not sure if these are copyrighted by wikipedia or not but I think it would be pretty cool if we had a page for these on here. I think you get my idea. I have one other question. Is the coding for these already programmed into this wiki or do we to write it. Japanimation(Talk) 13:13, 20 February 2007 (EST)

The Traffic?

Heroeswiki has turned out terrifically. As a fellow mediawiki admin of WikiStock, I've been following it since you started it as sort of a model of the best practices to implement into a wiki site. Unfortunately for me, my Wiki has not really caught any attention. I noticed you get tons of traffic to your site, and was hoping for suggestions on the best way to find site visitors to help grow a wiki community. I think you mentioned at sometime that you use google ads? I would be grateful for any suggestions you may have, on what you've found works best to find more interested visitors. I hope this isn't overly annoying. Thankyou--Rovo 20:42, 20 February 2007 (EST)

  • Hi, Rovo. No, it's not annoying at all, and thank you for the compliments. :) Some initial suggestions I've mentioned here a few months ago. Aside from that one of the largest issues is driving people to your site. I've found that Google ads with the right keywords are very good at steering people to your site. They are very expensive, though, so you could end up having to spend thousands of dollars in advertising. Try to put yourself in the shoes of the people you're interested in attracting and pay for keywords they're likely to search for in Google. If you use a combination of the community building suggestions I linked to initially along with enough advertising to bring interested people to your site then it may become even more popular. One thing Heroes Wiki has going for it is that it's catering to an audience that is very enthusiastic about the subject matter. Watching Heroes is exciting so people like to find out all they can about it. (Admin 20:56, 20 February 2007 (EST))
  • Thanks for your advice, I will keep working on it, I definitely do not have thousands for google ads at the moment, but I will see what else I can find for advertising. Once again, thank you for you time. Keep up the great work.--Rovo 10:11, 21 February 2007 (EST)

Hey, if a link has two hyphens in the url, it comes off as -- when you click on it. Do you know how to fix this?--Cylon 21:34, 21 February 2007 (EST)

  • Is there a link in particular that's having problems? (Admin 21:49, 21 February 2007 (EST))
    • Never mind, it got fixed. :) --Cylon 13:51, 22 February 2007 (EST)

Fan Creations - Incidental Heroes

Hi, You guys have THE most amazing Heroes website! I apologize for leaving a couple of messages on the site - I know email , but I don't know wiki............sorry.

I'm a huge fan and thought you might want to know about a fan produced video show/parody on YouTube based on Heroes that I'm creating (4 episodes are up already). It's called Incidental Heroes ( ) and chronicles the experiences of Mackenzie who seems to be crossing between reality and the TV show. Mackenzie has the power to see dead people and dead people from the Heroes TV show in particular. Chandra visits her in the first episode and that's what starts her on her adventure.

Incidental Heroes has been picking up some steam with Heroe fans and has been mentioned in a bunch of entertainment blogs.

I thought you might like to know about it and that it would be a great addition to your Fan Creations section.

Thanks a lot!!! Mackenzie

  • Hey, Mackenzie. I checked out a couple of the episodes, nice work. :) You're welcome to create an article for your show here, we can label it fan-fiction like the other articles. (Admin 18:06, 23 February 2007 (EST))
    • COOL!!!! How do I do that or find out how to???????? Thanks A LOT!!!! Glad you Liked it!
      • Just click Incidental Heroes and it'll let you create a new article for the show. Add whatever information is relevant to the series and I'm sure others will drop by the page to organize it so it fits in well with the other articles. Don't worry if things get added and removed, it's just what happens so that everything adheres to the policies and standards we've set up. :) It should read like an objective reference about the series and not sound like an advertisement for instance. It would also be helpful after the explanation of what Incidental Heroes is to break it down into sections and include a summary of the episode like:
==Episode 1 - Revelation==
Mackenzie discovers that she... etc. etc.

==Episode 2 - Confirmation==
etc. etc.

--Admin 20:53, 23 February 2007 (EST)

    • Thanks a LOT! I'm going to give it a shot now!

If you need any help with making the article, read Article formatting policies beforehand. Heroe 19:48, 23 February 2007 (EST)

    • OK. Will do.

Heroes Wiki Contributor

  • Hey Admin! I was asking myself about, when should I add the [[Category:Heroes Wiki Contributor]] to a user ? What are the conditions to add it ? Thanks =) --FrenchFlo(talk)(contribs) 13:47, 24 February 2007 (EST)
    • Hey, FrenchFlo. It's somewhat arbitrary, there are no official guidelines for it. I personally don't even use it, though someone added it to my page a long time ago. :) So I suppose if you see people actively editing and they don't have it already you can add it. It's sort of a judgement call. Personally I consider a contributor to be someone who contributes to articles over time, but not necessarily someone who just creates an account and posts a link to their website on the Links page for instance. (Admin 13:54, 24 February 2007 (EST))
      • Thanks for the heads up, you just confirmed what I was thinking. I'll add the flag to active posters if I saw some --FrenchFlo(talk)(contribs) 13:57, 24 February 2007 (EST)

Interwiki Links

I added a section on interwiki links to Help:Editing but I'm not sure which ones are set up. Also, we could use a section on interlanguage links, but I don't really use them so I'm not sure what to say about them.--Hardvice (talk) 17:02, 26 February 2007 (EST)

  • Ok, I'll add the list of links that are currently setup. Also do you have an opinion on interwiki links to Wikipedia? On one hand they're convenient, but on the other hand it makes it less obvious that the links are to off-site content. Personally I prefer manual links to Wikipedia so that it's obvious it's external. I think there might be a wikipedia interwiki link in there already. I've considered removing it before, but I'd be curious how others feel. (Admin 17:08, 26 February 2007 (EST))
    • It's in there. -Zeckalpha 17:14, 26 February 2007 (EST)
    • For what it's worth, I prefer the interwiki links just because my old dumb browser gets all screwy when there's an external link. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 07:27, 27 February 2007 (EST)

Sorry to sound pushy...

But can you check my suggestion for the Character boxes? --Riddler 22:41, 26 February 2007 (EST)

  • Just give it some time and let people reply to your suggestion. :) Personally I would say it's good enough to just leave it as it is and use the first appearance whether it be through graphic novel or episode. The first appearance info there isn't even very important since by just reading the character histories you can tell when the first appearance actually was. Since the graphic novels are listed in the histories as "Graphic Novel:" you can also just skim down and find the first episode they're mentioned in. But let's see what others say on the talk page. (Admin 22:46, 26 February 2007 (EST))
  • Heh, sorry again, I just didn't see this whole episode and feel useless on this site... and I like contributing in some way, haha.--Riddler 22:48, 26 February 2007 (EST)
    • Heh, no problem. :) There's always plenty to do here anyway, though it may get a little tough dodging all the spoilers if you haven't seen the whole episode yet. :) (Admin 22:49, 26 February 2007 (EST))

Regarding this edit, the infobox states "First", the Americaland air date is not the first. I understand you Americans are slightly upset that the Canadians aired the show first, however I don't see that as a reason to promote systemic bias. MatthewFenton 11:26, 27 February 2007 (EST)

  • Basing the site off of US airings takes care of a few issues including when information on new episodes should be added so that it doesn't spoil the episode. In accordance with this it seems consistent to also base the airdate on the US airing, though I welcome discussion on whether that should be the case or not. I'd rather it aired on the same day in every country, I'm actually more concerned about countries where the episodes are behind than where they're ahead. Though I'd rather not have US shows air earlier in other countries just as I don't want UK shows airing in the US first. (Admin 11:33, 27 February 2007 (EST))

Edit Count

Hi Admin! I really didn't know where to post that so I do this here and if you could just move it to the right place... Well I was on Lostpedia and I found they use an edit count template and I found the idea really cool. What about doing this here ? I think people would now about credibility of the editor when checking his user page and noticing the number of edits he have done. Plus, I find it funny and it's a kind of reward for the user. Anyway, it's just talk so tell me what do you think about using that template here on our users page.
