Despite the initial inclinations of executive producer/creator [[Tim Kring]] and executive producer [[Bryan Fuller]] Zach has been made straight mid-season (Season 1), for reasons that are unknown to the general fandom of the show. This action has caused an uproar in the fandom, by those who are disappointed because they looked at Zach as positive out-n-proud role model for those sexually confused and in their teenage years. It also upset the ambiguous nature of certain comments made by Zach himself, and mean-spirited Jackie's rude teasing comments. However in Homecoming, no matter what your stance was, most of the fandom cheered when Claire layed Jackie out with one solid punch to the face.

The controversy

Some argue that Zach's comment about denying his initial flirting with Claire with "trust me" being signs of him admitting to his gayness and then they will use the letting Claire down for not going as her date to the homecoming dance; but Zach never actually explicitly states that he is gay and if he's supposedly so out-n-proud than he may have said them and/or at the very least Claire would've never had to ask if Zach was flirting with her, she'd have known he was gay.

Despite the actor portraying Zach, Thomas Dekker, inking a contract to do the pilot of Sara Connor Chronicles, he is still going to be playing Zach for at least the rest of Season 1.
