Despite the actor portraying Zach, [[Thomas Dekker]], inking a contract to do the pilot of Sara Connor Chronicles, he is still going to be playing Zach for at least the rest of Season 1.

Claire and Zach arrive at school. (Homecoming)

"Clach" is a fan-created word coined to describe the relationship between the two characters Claire Bennet and Zach.

About

As seen in Genesis, Claire hadn't talked to Zach since the 6th grade. They are now both 17 and appear to be juniors at Union Wells High School in Odessa, TX.

Despite the initial inclinations of executive producer/creator Tim Kring and executive producer Bryan Fuller to make Zach gay, Zach has been made straight mid-season (Season 1), for reasons that are unknown to the general fandom of the show. This action has caused an uproar in the fandom, by those who are disappointed because they looked at Zach as positive out-and-proud role model for those sexually confused and in their teenage years. It also upset the ambiguous nature of certain comments made by Zach himself, and mean-spirited Jackie's rude, teasing comments. However, in Homecoming, most fans cheered when Claire layed Jackie out with one solid punch to the face.

Clach fans on the other hand could see the chemistry between both Zach and Claire from the very beginning, such as in Genesis when they were walking down the dirt road talking about how Zach nearly fudged himself after witnessing Claire's recorded plummet off of a 70-80 foot construction bridge and just got up and "put herself back together again". There are many many other instances of a suspected relationship forming between both Zach and Claire for the remainder of the first half of Season One.

Examples

Zach gives Claire a copy of Activating Evolution
  • Zach's willingness to keep Claire's secret throughout the entire time.
  • Zach's efforts to get Claire to "embrace her inner-freak" throughout the entire time.
  • Claire confided in Zach after waking on the autopsy table after Brody attempted to rape her in (One Giant Leap), and did not tell anyone else until after she rammed Brody's car (with Brody in it) into a wall. (Collision)
  • Claire no longer puts on her "mask" for Zach the entire time, like when she complained to him about Jackie taking credit for her heroic act. (Don't Look Back)
  • When Zach gives Activating Evolution by Chandra Suresh to Claire as a showing of support and to make her feel less like an outsider (Homecoming), Claire realizes that Zach has always been kind to her and she's not been so kind in return.
  • Claire invites Zach to be her homecoming date. (Homecoming)
  • Claire smiles affectionately when she realizes it's Zach on her cellular device, texting her from outside her window. (Homecoming)

The controversy

Some argue that Zach's comment about denying his initial flirting with Claire with "trust me" being signs of him admitting to his gayness and then they will use the letting Claire down for not going as her date to the homecoming dance; but Zach never actually explicitly states that he is gay and if he's supposedly so out-n-proud than he may have said it and/or at the very least Claire would've never had to ask if Zach was flirting with her, she'd have known he was gay.

Despite the actor portraying Zach, Thomas Dekker, inking a contract to do the pilot of Sara Connor Chronicles, he is still going to be playing Zach for at least the rest of Season 1.
