Ad-jacking?
Hey, what was up with another website popping up everytime I clicked a link? --Hero!(talk)(contribs) 18:31, 28 June 2007 (EDT)
- Unless someone snuck a crafty ad by Google it could be something with your browser. There shouldn't be any popup ads here. If you notice it happening with a particular ad let me know and I'll block the ad from being displayed here. (Admin 21:35, 28 June 2007 (EDT))
- It just happened. The website is CreativeCommons.com --Hero!(talk)(contribs) 13:15, 6 July 2007 (EDT)
- What was the ad for? Creative Commons isn't the kind of site that would use popup ads... it's not even advertising anything. (Admin 13:19, 6 July 2007 (EDT))
- It wasn't exactly an ad or a popup. I would type in the url of this site, and it took me there. --Hero!(talk)(contribs) 13:22, 6 July 2007 (EDT)
- Not sure why it would do that unless perhaps there's something up with your browser? Do you have Firefox installed already? If so and you continue to have trouble with IE, try Firefox instead and see if you have problems with that, too. If you don't have Firefox already there's a button for it all the way at the bottom of this page. (Admin 13:26, 6 July 2007 (EDT))

Interwiki
I think wikimedia: links to the wrong place. compare wikimedia:Help:Interwiki linking and wikimedia:Help:Interwiki linking. -Lөvөl 14:28, 5 June 2007 (EDT) from Help talk:Editing, it is still wrong. -Lөvөl 15:20, 9 July 2007 (EDT)
- It's correct. [[wikimedia:]] links to the Wikimedia Foundation and [[mediawiki:]] links to MediaWiki. mediawiki and wikimedia are two different things. Your interwiki link is using wikimedia and your direct link is using mediawiki. (Admin 15:47, 9 July 2007 (EDT))
- Oh, ok, is there a interwiki link to here? And [[mediawiki:]] doesn't work. -Lөvөl 17:41, 9 July 2007 (EDT)
- There used to be, but I took it out. I just put it back in. It's [[metawikipedia:]]. And you're right, [[mediawiki:]] isn't an actual interwiki link. I'm personally not a huge fan of interwiki links because I like it to be clear when a link is to an external site. (Admin 17:51, 9 July 2007 (EDT))

Hungarian
Hello, i am a big fan from Hungary. I help glady translation. I have time and instrumentality. Wath is my work? I learn fast. (Sorry, my grammar is bad)--mazsola39 05:56, 13 July 2007 (EDT)
- See Heroes Wiki:Languages for information. Admin will set up a localized wiki. :) 12:43, 13 July 2007 (EDT)
- If there are several people who are very interested in doing translations then I'll set up a localized version of it for Hungarian. Right now we have several languages that very few people even contribute to, so before creating any additional ones I want to make sure there is a strong demand for it and a number of people excited (not just willing) to work on it. It's more work than a single person can do, so there needs to be a group of people who truely want to do it. (Admin 12:46, 13 July 2007 (EDT))
- Ok. Yet i call several person, and they are helper. Yet is 3, i hope more to come. (Sorry my english so bad) --mazsola39 17:16, 15 July 2007 (EDT)
Other languages not working
Is there a reason the other languages are not working? -Lөvөl 12:02, 13 July 2007 (EDT)

Searching
On the search page, in addition to all the namespace check boxes, is it possible to have a "check all" box? ... or is that a pipe dream? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:49, 20 July 2007 (EDT)
- It should be pretty easy to do. I'll add it to my todo list and tackle it when I have some free time. (Admin 23:50, 13 August 2007 (EDT))
Happy SysAdmin Day
Hope you had a good one.--Bob 17:35, 27 July 2007 (EDT)
- Thanks. :) I received a few emails from people at work, too. One of them saying that if I "worked in the office, we'd be having cake now, but since he does not, none of us will be enjoying cake." Heheh. Too funny. (Admin 17:37, 27 July 2007 (EDT))
Spoilers on german Wiki
Hey, we got a problem coming up on the german wiki and i hope you might be able to help us. Since Heroes has not yet started in germany (it will start in october) every piece of info in the wiki is a spoiler. So far we have more or less copied the articles from this wiki and translated them and stuff like that. When people are gonna start using the wiki they will be able to see much info than they could have gotten by watching the first episodes due to the fact that we already got all the info that is only revealed later in the season. so what shall we do now? mark all the articles as spoiler and remove the spoiler-tag bit by bit or leave it the way it is and leave it completly to the user to find out what info may be a spoiler and what not? i hope you get the problem and may have a advice for us what we shall do. thx Waldmeister 10:45, 31 July 2007 (EDT)
- I'd say it's up to you and the community on the German wiki to decide what the wiki will be. If it's just a translation of the English wiki into German then it would make sense to leave all the articles intact and just add spoiler tags. If you'd like it to follow the show as it airs in Germany, then you could do something like comment out any spoiler information in the articles and then uncomment it after the episode airs. It's really up to you all on the German wiki to decide how you'd like to handle it. (Admin 12:32, 31 July 2007 (EDT))
- That's alot of work to do if we comment out all the spoiler info and uncomment them later. currently the staff thats activly working is pretty small. there is only me and like 2 or 3 others that work now and then...nothing regular so far :/ i guess we could go by the idea of MiamiVolts and mark all episodes as spoiler that have not been aired yet. maybe we can even remove them from some templates to make it harder to accidentaly read them...don't know yet. Waldmeister 12:58, 31 July 2007 (EDT)
- Another option, which is much easier to do but less direct, is to do a site notice that all information on the site is from episodes that have already aired. That way, there's just one edit to do be done, and the notice is at the top of every page. That's not necessarily what I would do, but it's an option. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:45, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

My friend
Hey, did you visit my friend Mandy's blog? She said she got a visit from somebody I think is you. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:19, 2 August 2007 (EDT)
- Yep, it was me. I saw she linked to Heroes Wiki. I got a kick out of her referring to this as your unpaid job. :) Plus it's great that she'll be able to catch up on the whole first season of Heroes on Tivo. (Admin 10:59, 2 August 2007 (EDT))
- We're watching it together, and we're up to Run!--it's been nice catching up on episodes I haven't seen in quite some time....How did you find her site? Do you just search Google for Heroes Wiki? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:59, 2 August 2007 (EDT)
- I may have been watching the referer logs and seen someone click on the link to get here, I forget. I check out the sites that people are visiting us from sometimes. (Admin 19:04, 2 August 2007 (EDT))

French Wiki
I'm not sure if you watch it or not, but check the latest addition to HW:Languages. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:43, 3 August 2007 (EDT)
- I do watch it, thanks. :) (Admin 15:29, 3 August 2007 (EDT))
I'm sure you keep an eye on the french version. I hope you think my work on it is good.
I know it's maybe too early to ask you that, but I think if I was an Admin of the french version, I'll work with more facilities. I could protect the site from vandalism, suppress some things, ...
Waiting your response, I go back to my "heroes work" :) Desperate July 14:11, 7 August 2007 (EDT)
- Keep up the good work over there and you're likely to become an administrator over there. That's how people became administrators on the other language wikis. :) An administrator can't do a whole lot more than others to be honest and vandalism can be fixed by anyone. I'm not sure what you're saying could be "suppressed" but I'd imagine anyone could do that as well if necessary. The main things administrators can do is block people and protect pages and we try to avoid doing either unless absolutely necessary. (Admin 14:19, 7 August 2007 (EDT))
- OK thanks for your response. So I go on... :) Desperate July 14:39, 7 August 2007 (EDT)
- Hey, Desperate July. You've done some great work here so far and are helping to bring the French Heroes Wiki to life. I've made you an administrator here so you can handle any administrative tasks that might arise. I recommend checking out the english site's administrator's page here for some tips and suggestions on being an administrator at Heroes Wiki. We may handle some things differently than other wikis. For instance we try to avoid protecting pages or banning users unless absolutely necessary. Congrats and keep up the good work here! (Admin 11 août 2007 à 14:55 (EDT))
- Thank you very much. I'll work a lot for the french version.
After reading the english site's administrator's page, I traduce it in french version.
I'll do my best to avoid vandalism.
Thanks again ! Desperate July 06:40, 12 August 2007 (EDT)
- Thank you very much. I'll work a lot for the french version.
PNG
- I've noticed that PNG icons always appears on black background. What can I do to modify black background to transparent one for this type of image ?
-
For example...
Thank you for your help, Desperate July 07:19, 12 August 2007 (EDT)
- Looks like a transparency issue with creating the png thumbnails. I'll look into it. (Admin 10:58, 12 August 2007 (EDT))
- At second glance, it appears to only happen with galleries, not thumbnails in general. Interesting. (Admin 11:00, 12 August 2007 (EDT))
Yeah that's kinda weird. File:Vista-keditbookmarks.png . Looks like the <gallery> code avoid the usage of transparency. I already noticed that but I didn't thought it was a problem since a gallery is used for pictures ( I mean, TV screenshots ) which shouldn't have a transparent background. --
(talk) 04:55, 13 August 2007 (EDT)
- The gallery was just an example but in french version (and maybe in others) png icons (not used with [[Image:xxxxx.png]]) appears on black background. Look at my user page here : the wonder woman's icon appears in black background... Desperate July 18:02, 13 August 2007 (EDT)
Timeout
Hey Admin, I forgot to tell you; (you probably already know it) but Heroeswiki experienced some lag today. I think it was about 15:00 here so it must been something like 9am for you. During almost 30min or maybe 1hour (max) I wasn't able to join any pages of the entire site. Just in case you didn't already know... :)= --
(talk) 15:51, 17 August 2007 (EDT)
- I don't see any drops in traffic earlier today that would indicate any issues this morning. It may have been an issue closer to your end since it doesn't appear to have affected others accessing the wiki earlier. (Admin 16:00, 17 August 2007 (EDT))
Mediawiki plug in suggestion
Hey admin... back in march I suggested you might want to check out my mediawiki plug in Winter, which adds a lot of programming language functionality to Mediawiki pages. I just wanted to give you a heads up that I released a new version which has lots of new features as well as various configuration options to help prevent novice or malicious users from wreaking havoc with the plug in. For an example of something on the Heroes wiki that could use Winter, Here's the "did you know" box with 4 random factoids which change with each view. Anyways again just a suggestion :) --Frantik (Talk) 23:16, 17 August 2007 (EDT)
Bionic Woman wiki
- In preparation for the new Bionic Woman series coming out on NBC I've already setup a Bionic Woman Wiki at http://bionicwiki.com. If anyone here becomes fascinated with this series once it airs and wants to contribute to the success of a fresh new wiki then feel free. I don't know if the series is going to be a success or not, but I wanted to be ready just in case. (Admin 18:47, 18 August 2007 (EDT))
- I was wondering why my username was on a page for that wiki when I googled it. That makes sense.--Bob 19:46, 18 August 2007 (EDT)
- Seems like some options aren't set on the Bionic Woman wiki...a friend Bigfoot lover replied about that on your discussion page on that site, but I thought I'd help him out by forwarding the message here just in case.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:23, 19 August 2007 (EDT)
- Thanks for relaying it here. I hadn't installed some of the extensions over there yet that we use here to make life easier. I've installed them now, so things should be better. (Admin 01:34, 19 August 2007 (EDT))

Digging
Hey Admin, is digging a way to get a link upper in the google's research results ? --
(talk) 17:19, 25 August 2007 (EDT)
- Not exactly, no. It's a popular user-driven news aggregation site (at least here in the US) where news gets submitted and voted on. The idea is that if lots of people vote for a particular article then it's usually something of high interest and it gets placed closer to the top so more people can find it by default. (Admin 17:23, 25 August 2007 (EDT))
- Oh okay that's cool. Because trying to get a link upper in the results isn't possible exept with money or hacking the bots etc... :) --
(talk) 17:25, 25 August 2007 (EDT)
- I wouldn't say that exactly. If you don't try to beat the system and instead provide a valuable resource you'll naturally do well in the rankings. Heroes Wiki does well in Google's rankings for a number of terms already in fact. (Admin 17:28, 25 August 2007 (EDT))

You've got mail! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 02:13, 28 August 2007 (EDT)

Shirt
I noticed from the comment on my talk page you have some shirts left over. If you have one to spare, I'd like one. Thanks. --Bob 02:16, 30 August 2007 (EDT)
- Just send me an email at admin@heroeswiki.com with your shipping address and t-shirt size and I'll get one out to you. There's a size chart for reference here. (Admin 02:26, 30 August 2007 (EDT))
Site Crash
HeroesWiki just recently crashed and came back up 5-10 minutes later. I sent you the error message a few minutes ago by e-mail. My e-mail's acting up tonight, so if you don't get it let me know and I'll send the error to you a different way.--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:54, 1 September 2007 (EDT)
- Saw it and I replied to your email. It was one of the rare instances of server problems. (Admin 00:55, 1 September 2007 (EDT))
- Just got your reply. Thanks.--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:58, 1 September 2007 (EDT)
Stats update
This was the first stats update over a new month using the new templates. There wasn't any difficulty, was there? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 02:34, 1 September 2007 (EDT)
- Nope, though the graph images will need to be updated for the new month. (Admin 02:36, 1 September 2007 (EDT))
- I can either leave up last month's for a few days (and mark them as such through the template) or upload blank graphs. Which would you prefer? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 02:40, 1 September 2007 (EDT)
