Sullying your virgin talk space

So my computer crashed last weekend. I know, sob sob, it's okay. But the good news is I have all new, um, everything. I'm loving Firefox 2.0 (yea spell check!) Two quick questions, though. First, I'm not able to use the alt functions now (for instance, I can't patrol using alt-p, or upload using alt-u). Any way to turn this on, or any remedies of which you know? Second, I somehow lost my picture editing program, and can't remember what it was. Is there a good free one (yes, I'm a cheapo) I can download? Thanks! — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:26, 1 March 2007 (EST)

  • I hope you used the Firefox link at the bottom of the wiki, Ryan.  :) As for photo editing, if you want something simple try Picassa. There's a link to that at the bottom of the page, too. :) If you want more power, I like the GIMP. Free, open-source... and has a Windows version for you people still stuck on Windows. :) (Admin 21:48, 1 March 2007 (EST))
  • I dunno if that was a typo or not, but all of the alt functions show up as Alt+Shift+(Letter) on mine, not Alt+(Letter).--Hardvice (talk) 00:14, 2 March 2007 (EST)
    • Actually, it wasn't a typo. On my old Firefox, it was just alt+letter. Including shift works like a charm. Cheers! — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:21, 2 March 2007 (EST)

Image site Linking

Do you know how to Link External Image to Show in this site? without uploading? [ [img:http://www.img.jpg|text]]] [[User:RED|[img:http://www.img.jpg|text]]]]
~ ~ ~ ~ Red = 10:46, 7 March 2007 (EST)

  • All images should be uploaded to the site.--Hardvice (talk) 13:58, 7 March 2007 (EST)

Sorry about that (adding the two non-Preview Parasite clips. I hate this Canada-early thing....) I'm glad you brought it to my attention though....I'll just have to avoid all-things-Heroes until later tonight. At least those two clips weren't too 'spoilery'. --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 03/5/2007 16:30 (EST)

  • The Haitian/Claire/Other Person one is pretty spoilery.--Hardvice (talk) 16:33, 5 March 2007 (EST)
    • Yes, quite an interesting suprise in that entire scene....nothing humongous, but quite interesting. I am glad I didn't end up finding some huge spoiler thingy like "Sylar tries to cut open Mr Muggles skull and finds out that he is really the all-powerful Uluru", or anything like that. --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 03/5/2007 17:42 (EST)
      • I believe they're saving that scene for Season Two. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:52, 5 March 2007 (EST)

You've probably been waiting since Genesis to be able to say that, haven't you? :) (Admin 23:46, 5 March 2007 (EST))

  • More or less. Now we need new characters with long o's in their names.--Hardvice (talk) 23:47, 5 March 2007 (EST)

  • Hey, if you do a Google search for Heroes from, does Heroes Wiki show up at the bottom of the first page for you? It's showing up there for me at the moment (placement is usually pretty fickle)... I'm excited to see it hit the top results finally. (Admin 01:55, 6 March 2007 (EST))
    • #8, not counting subpage hits. Booyakasha!--Hardvice (talk) 01:58, 6 March 2007 (EST)
      • Excellent. The site has been working its way up and down page 2 for a while. It'll probably dip back down there eventually, but the overall trend has been positive. (Admin 02:00, 6 March 2007 (EST))

Public Service Announcement

It really needs to be added to the welcome template! What do you say? Heroe 20:05, 6 March 2007 (EST)

  • I think that would be kind of ... rude.--Hardvice (talk) 22:07, 6 March 2007 (EST)

Template:Gitelman Tree

I don't know to do it; could you add Hana's grandmother to the tree?--Cylon 17:43, 9 March 2007 (EST)

  • She's intentionally left off. We don't know for sure if she's her mother's mother or her father's mother.--Hardvice (talk) 17:47, 9 March 2007 (EST)

Ryan Smith

Any idea who Ryan Smith is? IMDb lists him as playing a deputy (I'm assuming at the Burnt Toast Diner) in Six Months Ago and Homecoming. He was also in Las Vegas, which is nice. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:15, 10 March 2007 (EST)

  • I think he's one of the ones we couldn't really identify. He must be one of the ones who speaks in Homecoming as they arrest Peter, since he's credited, but I'm not sure which. Incidentally, my best friend when I was a kid had a younger brother called "Ryan Smith". Probably not the same guy, I'm guessing--but y'know, "Smith" is such an uncommon name, to say nothing of "Ryan". Only weirdos name their kids ... ah ... Ryan.--Hardvice (talk) 17:19, 10 March 2007 (EST)
    • I knew a guy named Ryan Smith in elementary school. (Again, probably not the same guy.) However, were sworn enemies, precisely because we had the same first name. Kids... — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:22, 10 March 2007 (EST)
      • OK, now that his IMDb has pictures, he's easier to locate. He's the first one on the scene when Peter's arrested in Homecoming (picture coming). Haven't seen him in Six Months Ago; I'm presuming he's at the diner, since the only other Midland-Odessa scenes are at the Bennet home.--Hardvice (talk) 17:24, 10 March 2007 (EST)
        • That's kinda what I was thinking, since there's not too many common places in those two eps. Although, IMDb has been known to be wrong. (James Kyson Lee is credited for 19 Heroes episodes, and Santiago Cabrera is credited with only 3. Go figure.) — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:28, 10 March 2007 (EST)
          • Actually, I think it's just because Peter's arrest appears again at the end of 6MA. It's shot from a slightly different angle, and our boy Ryan speaks again, so I guess he would need a credit, even though it's the same scene.--Hardvice (talk) 17:31, 10 March 2007 (EST)
            • Weird. He was also credited as the "Montecito Deputy" in some crap show Standoff. Looking at the episode, it appears to be a bank, not a casino. But I guess this R.S. likes to get his deputy on. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:38, 10 March 2007 (EST)
              • He has a case of copface.--Hardvice (talk) 17:41, 10 March 2007 (EST)
              • While we're on the subject, are there any other overlooked trivial characters we can add?--Hardvice (talk) 17:44, 10 March 2007 (EST)

Parking lot

Aw, shiz ... I just got done linking the stupid parking lot. It's definitely a convenience store where they stop, but I mistook some newspaper kiosks for gas pumps when I was looking at this pic as a thumb. It's not a gas station, is it? — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:13, 10 March 2007 (EST)

  • Nope. Oddly enough, I had named this pic "Primm gas station hope ando.jpg" when I capped it, thinking the same thing, and then realized that Steve's outside a liquor store and a Greyhound station.--Hardvice (talk) 18:15, 10 March 2007 (EST)

Thankyou Thank you

Thanks for all that work you did on changing Heroes360 to Heroes 360. It had been bugging me, but it wasn't something I really wanted to go through and change. Thanks! — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:32, 12 March 2007 (EDT)

  • Well, seeing as it was largely my mess...--Hardvice (talk) 01:38, 12 March 2007 (EDT)

I'm going to bed. Have fun!RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:43, 15 March 2007 (EDT)

Linderman's power

  • Thanks for the edit. My only problem is the fact that he does have a power. It's not just a theory, but what power he possesses is anyone's guess. I understand where you're coming from, though. The edit can wait until April 23 when we finally find out what the ability is. I can't wait! (Culpable 19:11, 15 March 2007 (EDT))
I think it's more about the fact that it's considered as spoiler to know(/presume?) that Mr. Linderman have a power. For the moment, regular visitors that only have watched the last episode (Parasite), it's still a theorie so it shouldn't appear on character's main page! Well, that's just my thought, I might be wrong! --FrenchFlo(talk)(contribs) 19:19, 15 March 2007 (EDT)
No, you're absolutely correct. We have a pretty tight policy against putting unaired information on main pages. That's what spoilers are for. Beside the fact that the clip from aintitcoolnews isn't exactly confirming much of anything, since Linderman is seen demonstrating a power (and McDowell telling EW that his character has a power is convincing, but hardly canon), nothing has actually aired yet. Theory or no, it doesn't belong on the page until April. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:36, 15 March 2007 (EDT)
I agree with you guys. I'm new to this wiki, and every wiki for the matter, so I'm sorry for editting the page without knowing the policies.(Culpable 23:43, 15 March 2007 (EDT))
It's not a problem at all; I just wanted to explain why your edit was undone so you wouldn't be upset. Welcome aboard, and we're very glad to have you here!--Hardvice (talk) 23:45, 15 March 2007 (EDT)
Thanks again, and I'm glad to be here.(Culpable 23:58, 15 March 2007 (EDT))

Pred 0212

  • Why is he removing the kanji images from Hiro Nakamura's page? (Anomy 23:45, 17 March 2007 (EDT))

Thanks for changing all those Theories:People links to Theories:Evolved Humans.... Man, that maintenance is a bitch. I shoulda gone to bed like an hour ago; I'm upset I couldn't finish it. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:55, 18 March 2007 (EDT)

  • Yeah, I'm not a big fan of it, which is probably why I keep finding other things to do. I normally just wait until my tolerance for how unprofessional the theories articles look reaches a boiling point and then work myself into a "stay up until 4 AM editing wildly" frenzy. Thanks for beating me to it. I do not envy you.--Hardvice (talk) 02:01, 18 March 2007 (EDT)

Gotta run

I gotta run. Have fun! ... Wanna bet Dallas is Linderman? — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:38, 20 March 2007 (EDT)

  • Or Austin? Actually, I'm going with Dallas=Mr. Petrelli, Austin=Linderman. There are references to "our son" taking his first steps in Dallas's letter, and if Nathan were, say, 2 in 1968, he'd be a little over 40 right now, which is certainly possible.--Hardvice (talk) 06:39, 20 March 2007 (EDT)
    • I was thinking the same thing, but backwards. The "son" is good evidence, but I think there's something there about Dallas's probability manipulation. ... I'm intrigued. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:18, 20 March 2007 (EDT)

  • I noticed all the category redirects... did it cause a problem to just set the catlink variable to something like ":Category:SomeCategory"? (Admin 11:59, 22 March 2007 (EDT))
    • Yeah. It interprets the opening colon as an indent, rendering the links like this:

Category:Cast and Crew]]

This isn't a problem when the brackets are part of the catlink variable ("[[:Category:SomeCategory]]", but the templates require alt text and other stuff that can't be included in the variable.--Hardvice (talk) 12:02, 22 March 2007 (EDT)

Thanks for taking on so many of those cast stubs! — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:37, 22 March 2007 (EDT)

Finding Copy/Pasted Articles

Here a site I use as a web designer to check content to see if it was copy/pasted from another site. I thought you might find it useful. Copyscape --Xmuskrat 14:52, 26 March 2007 (EDT)

Links in articles

So for the map (and other pages), I've noticed that some have links for a character/place/item once, and all occurrences afterwards do not have a link. Other pages, however, do not stay to this format. I noticed you added a link to Zane Taylor in the Road Kill section when it was referenced in the episode listed right above. Is there some formatting standard regarding links? Just curious for my future reference. --Bob 18:17, 26 March 2007 (EDT)

  • In general, there should be one link per section. That accommodates users who have followed a redirect or the Table of Contents to reach a particular section.--Hardvice (talk) 18:20, 26 March 2007 (EDT)
    • That's what I thought, but as I said before, I had seen numerous articles that did not follow that. I'll make sure to do that in the future.--Bob 18:25, 26 March 2007 (EDT)

Undoing Moves

If you need to undo multiple moves, just work backwards from the most recent to the oldest. Cutting-and-pasting the article contents instead wipes the edit history, which can be valuable.--Hardvice (talk) 18:38, 26 March 2007 (EDT)

  • I noticed I was in trouble two steps in... I think everything is fine now (other than the history. :( -- Ohmyn0(talk) 19:10, 26 March 2007 (EDT)
    • The history should be back now.--Hardvice (talk) 19:24, 26 March 2007 (EDT)

Unused files

Grrrr! I know that's stupid but I can't stand the Special:Unusedimages page. There is picture from November 2k6 we won't ever use. I want to delete theeeeeeeeeeeeeem! But I can't ! :( I know that keeping them is not a problem but I don't see why we should and as a perfectionnist, I'm pretty anoyed by this page! Can't we just delete files we won't use ? -- FrenchFlo (talk)        17:50, 28 March 2007 (EDT)

  • I think we can make a concerted effort to use as many of them as possible, if there's an appropriate page. We can also check and make sure none of them are duplicates (or near duplicates) which can be deleted. If any are just plain bad, we can probably delete those, too. But I'm afraid we're probably stuck with a bunch of them just floating around unused. If there are any which are particularly useless, go ahead and slap {{afd}} on them and see what people say. It's worth a shot, even though there's really no reason to delete them. That said, I tend to agree with you: I'd rather have the page clean, too, but I get over it by just not going to it very often.--Hardvice (talk) 18:13, 28 March 2007 (EDT)

All the BTS (Behind the Scenes) files are in the Special:Unusedimages. Shouldn't we create a special page for them ? -- FrenchFlo (talk)        17:50, 28 March 2007 (EDT)

  • Heroe uploaded most of them. I'm not sure if he has plans for them, but it's worth waiting to see what he does with them. Personally, I don't see much value in a "behind the scenes" image page, and the copyright lawyer in me really dislikes the thought of image-only pages. They could be used to illustrate various articles in Category:Production and the like, though ... again, unless Heroe has some other plan for them in mind.--Hardvice (talk) 18:13, 28 March 2007 (EDT)

There's an argument to be made that "Gittelman" is correct; however, a caption on is about the worst evidence you can provide. They screw up so frequently that the fact that they spell it with two T's makes me more convinced it's spelled with one. Among their errors to date, they've confused D.L. with the Haitian and spelled Niki with two K's. They're about as far from a reliable source as you can get, and definitely not a canon source.--Hardvice (talk) 23:28, 29 March 2007 (EDT)

  • Well they spell Gabriel Gray with an A instead of an E does that mean their wrong? They corrected Deveaux and I don't recall seeing them having mixed DL with SED are you sure your not mixing it with a fan posting? also they spelled Bennett with a double T so which cannon are you following?
    ~ ~ ~ ~ Red = 15:09, 30 March 2007 (EDT)
    • The only canon source is a broadcast episode or the graphic novel, period. A caption for the end of Hiros said "D.L. Hawkins -- Mr. Bennet's cleaner". It was rather famously mocked, and yes, I saw it myself. "Gray" is spelled with an "A" on-screen (see the window of Gray and Sons). "Bennet" has been spelled with a second "T" exactly once--in the closing credits for Lyle's name. Since the credits are not the episodes, the episodes (which have always spelled it with one T). While we're at it, "canon" is spelled with two n's, not three. A "cannon" is a big gun. A "canon" is a body of work which is formally recognized. Also, comments go at the bottom of talk pages, not the top.--Hardvice (talk) 15:28, 30 March 2007 (EDT)
      • If your Following the Graphic Novel, then GiTTleman is the Right Answer; since it has been USED/Spelled more than once in the Novels in that manner than a Single T. How's that CaNNon blasting your ideas? ^_^
        ~ ~ ~ ~ Red = 16:44, 30 March 2007 (EDT)
        • You don't have to be immature about it. Hardvice is an administrator to the site, and his job is to ensure quality standards. The quality standard set for this site is to site canon from aired episodes. If you have a problem with it (or cannot express yourself in a mature manner), go to another site. We're trying our best to provide a service, and you're only making it difficult for others by carrying on this attitude.--Bob 16:52, 30 March 2007 (EDT)
        • "Gittelman" is not the "right" answer because there are conflicting canon sources. The graphic novels have spelled it both ways. It's not a matter of one spelling being more common; it's not possible for either to be correct without the other being wrong. See Help:Sources#Contradictions between sources. Since we have to call the article something, we're going with the original spelling, which is "Gitelman". However, the Note should be changed to mention that the correct spelling is unknown.--Hardvice (talk) 17:14, 30 March 2007 (EDT)
          • Also the way Hana pronounced her name is "Git-Tel-man" NOT "Gi-Tel-man". AND the double TT Is stated in the intro of Part Two wouldn't the narrator be more Accurate than the other characters pronouncing the other's name? [1]
            ~ ~ ~ ~ Red = 21:50, 2 April 2007 (EDT)
            • No. Bottom line: there are conflicting spellings. None is more correct, no matter what crazy reason you attach to it. That said, "Gitelman" is the most common spelling, the current spelling, and the first spelling to appear, so that's what we'll use (since the article has to be called something), but the note no longer refers to "Gittelman" (or "Gittleman", which they've also used) as a misspelling. This issue is resolved until the spelling appears in an episode. Nothing else can change it at this point. See Help:Sources#Contradictions between sources (yet again).--Hardvice (talk) 22:01, 2 April 2007 (EDT)
