About
Although changed to "Chennai", the name Madras was derived from Madraspatnam, the colonial site chosen by the British East India Company for a permanent settlement. The city is credited as bein 368 years old, as of 2007. Chennai is the third largest commercial and industrial centre in India, and is known for its cultural heritage and temple architecture. It is also known as the Detroit of South Asia. It has also become a major centre for outsourced jobs from the West.
Trivia
Officially, there's no longer a city named "Madras"; it's now known as "Chennai", thanks to a reform movement in India that is eliminating colonial names in favor of native ones. However, most of the major institutions, including the University of Madras, continue to use the original name.
