About
Located in the Pacific Ocean, Japan lies to the east of China, Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea in the south. The kanji characters that make up Japan's name mean "sun-origin", which is why Japan is sometimes identified as the "Land of the Rising Sun".
The combined area of largest four islands of Japan, Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū and Shikoku, is 97% of the country's total land area. The capital city (Tokyo), Otsu, and Hiroshima are on the island of Honshū. Most of the islands are mountainous and many are volcanic.
Notes
- According to Past Experience, Takezo Kensei lead an army to defeat an oni in Tottori and afterwards settled a dispute between two of his samurai warriors over the oni's sword by breaking it in two. Tottori is both a prefecture and city of Honshū, the largest island in Japan. Within the prefecture are also the Tottori Sand Dunes. Tottori became a city on October 1, 1889.
