Summary

  • April is thinking about her fight with Stephanie when agents show up.
  • April flees her home, but the men stay right on her tail.

Synopsis

“I hope you’re happy! I hope you’re happy now! I hope you’re happy how you hurt your cause forever; I hope you think you’re clever!”

I love this song! April turned up the volume on the stereo in her basement. This was the best song in the whole show. Okay, “For Good” was amazing and beautiful, but it can’t compare to “Defying Gravity” in my eyes!

“Something has changed within me, something is not the same. I’m through with playing by the rules of someone else’s game. Too late for second guessing, too late to go back to sleep; it’s time to trust my instincts, close my eyes and leap!”

April felt her whole body shiver as Idina Menzel hit the last note on “leap.” I got that same chill when I saw Wicked live. It felt so much more real in person, but I’m so glad I bought the soundtrack to remember it and to hear the songs again and again.

“Too long I’ve been afraid of losing love I guess I’ve lost. Well if that’s love, it comes at much too high a cost!”

I absolutely loved the actress who played Elphaba when I saw it downtown. It was probably a good thing mom wouldn’t let me fly to New York to see it. I loved it here in Chicago, and I had so much fun with Stephanie… I wish that fight had never gotten so out of control…

“Just you and I defying gravity! With you and I defying gravity, they’ll never bring us down.”

We both said things we regret. I can admit that. But it never should have ruined our friendship.

“I hope you’re happy in the end. I hope you’re happy, my friend.”

We’re both so stubborn. No one likes taking the blame or saying that they were wrong, but this is ridiculous.

“And if I’m flying solo, at least I’m flying free!”

All it would take is a phone call.

“Tell them how I am defying gravity! I’m flying high, defying gravity!”

April pulls her phone out of her pocket and starts scrolling through her contacts.

“And nobody, in all of Oz, no wizard that there is or was, is ever gunna bring me down!”

April gets to Stephanie’s name and freezes.

“Bring me down!”

Her thumb hovers over the green call button.

“Woah-oh-oh-oh-oooooh!”

Crash! April jumps up off the sofa and spins toward the source of the sudden noise. She inches to the basement stairs. Crash! Is that coming from the front— Crash! Bits of April’s front door fly through the air, past the doorway to the basement. This can’t be good.

April does a 180 and leaps onto her couch, opening the little window above it, which is just big enough for her to squeeze through. As soon as her head and torso are outside she hears feet stomping down the stairs. Shoot! April pushes back against the outer wall of her house to just barely pull her legs out. She gets on her hands and knees to start crawling towards her fence, shielded by the bushes her mother had planted to line the side of their home. Maybe I can make it to the garage and into the Jeep quick enough to escape. I just have to stay low…

Within a few seconds, April is staring up at the top of her wooden fence, wondering how to quickly get to the other side without being noticed. Too bad Krystal isn’t around… After coming up with no way to get past the fence without exposing herself, April throws caution to the winds and springs up, catching the top of the fence with her hands and launching herself over. Before her feet hit the ground, however, she hears a shout: “There!”

Son of a— April hits the ground running, crossing her yard in a matter of seconds, easily clearing the lawn mower and patio furniture. She opens the garage door and slams it behind her, seeing her gate begin to open at the same time. April bolt locks the door and welds it shut with intense amounts of electricity.

April whips around and walks toward her car, struggling to free her keys from her pocket. Once she succeeds, she opens her car door, gets in the driver seat, and puts the key in the ignition. She takes a moment to look at herself in the rear-view mirror and catch her breath. Then she jerks the key forward, jabs the garage opener, throws the car in reverse, and pounds the gas pedal with her foot.

After turning out of her garage, April accelerates down her alley. When she is within four houses of the street, a big black van comes seemingly out of nowhere to block her path. April is thrown forward as she hits the brakes, then she turns her head as she puts the Jeep in reverse and starts backing down the alley. Once again, a black van appears at the end of the alley she is heading towards. “You have got to be kidding me!” When she sees that both vans have started to drive down the alley to her, April jerks the car to a stop and throws it in park, bailing out and hopping the nearest fence. After sprinting past some confused children, April jumps over the other chain-link fence and crosses the street to find herself in an empty soccer field.

Just when April thinks there is some hope, she hears the rotors of a helicopter behind her. She stops dead in her tracks, every muscle in her body tense but unmoving. She slowly turns to face the big black helicopter whirring closer and closer. No where left to run. Guess that means fighting is my best option.

The helicopter has stopped moving and is hovering in mid-air as men covered in black begin to descend to the ground on ropes. Before the first man gets to the grass, a black van pulls up and more black-clad men pile out. April releases a bolt of electricity, hitting the first agent to start running to her after landing in the field. He falls to the ground face-first and April lets the man behind him have a dose, too. Out of her right hand leaps a bolt that flies through the air and lands in one of the men from the van, while another bolt from her left hand gets one more from the helicopter. April puts both hands together to unleash a huge voltage on some of the agents that showed up in the van.

The second van finally arrives, and April glances up to the helicopter to see how many more men she has to face. Suddenly a human-sized blur whizzes towards the helicopter, knocking an unsuspecting man off his feet and plummeting to earth. No way…

The blur moves to April, landing right beside her. “Stephanie?! What are you doing here?”

“I’m here to save you!”

“But how—Argh!” April felt electricity coursing through her body and looked down to see the end of a taser attached to her arm. She redirects the electricity, sending it back through the cord and into the man still holding his gun.

“April! Are you okay?”

“Should’ve known better than to try and electrocute somebody who can electrocute them. Besides, I thought you hated me.”

April turned to electrocute more agents while Stephanie talked to her back. “That doesn’t mean I want you to get hurt.”

“I don’t want you to get hurt either. And that’s why you need to leave.”

“What?! No, I can get us out!”

“No you can’t. I’d weigh you down and then they’d get us both. At least I’ll be able to hold them off while you get away.”

“What if—”

“Steph, it won’t work! Go!”

“But—”

“Go!” April sends an agent flying backwards through the air on that final word.

“…April, I… I’m sorry. For everything.”

“I know. Me too.”

A tear rolls down Stephanie’s face as she turns around and starts slowly flying away. April turns around again to face the men that are approaching her. After hitting a couple more agents, she feels a little jab in her stomach. When she looks down she sees a tiny vial full of what she can only assume to be tranquilizer. Aprils twists around and lands on her back, getting a glimpse of Stephanie’s figure high above the clouds. April smiles and fades into the dark.
