  • Krystal deals with everyone after the events of the day.
  • A fallen hero wakes up in a strange place.

What happens now? Krystal sits on the grass of a park in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada. She stares at the pond before her, seeing Sophia in her peripherals skipping stones. She cannot see Dimitri, but she knows he is seated on the park bench behind her. None of them are speaking to each other; their attitudes seem to match with the fog that has rolled in on the already gray and cloudy day. Nathaniel told Dimitri that we would all meet here, so where is everyone? What if something happened? What if someone got hurt? Should we go look for them, or should we keep waiting? How long should we wait before making any decisions? And what is supposed to happen if we do all come together?

Thud! When Krystal turns her head to find the source of the noise, she sees an old friend, looking more worn out than she had ever remembered her looking.

“Stephanie!” Krystal jumps to her feet as Sophia drops the stone she was about to skip and spins around. “Oh my god, are you okay?”

“I’ve been better…”

“Wait.” Sophia looks around. “I thought you were gunna get April?”

“About that… Listen, I just went through a lot and I just need a little bit of time to rest.”

“Humph.” The girls turn to see Dimitri, still sitting on the bench with his arms crossed, staring off at the pond.

“What?” Stephanie takes a step towards Dimitri. “Do you have something to say?”

“No, nothing.” He continues to stare into the distance. “It’s just funny how, last I checked, you and April were in a fight. Now you’re here, April isn’t, and you have nothing to say.”

Stephanie takes another step towards Dimitri and clenches her fists. “What are you implying?”

Dimitri finally turns to face Stephanie. “Where is April?”

“Guys stop it!” Krystal steps in between the two staring at each other. “What is this helping?”

Suddenly three more people are in the park with them: Kaitlin, holding an unconscious Daniella, and Matt, breathing heavily as he drops bags around their feet. Krystal notices that Kaitlin’s eyes are red as she sinks to the ground, pulling Daniella closer to cradle her.

“Oh my god.” Krystal rushes to Kaitlin and crouches in front of her, grabbing her upper arm. “What happened?” Kaitlin bites her lip and just shakes her head.

Matt sits on one of the bags as Stephanie instantly forgets Dimitri, now standing, and turns her attention to Matt. “We were attacked. Daniella fought them off pretty well, too; until she was tased.”

Sophia walks closer to Matt, speaking up. “But if she was only hit by a taser, she should be waking up soon, right?”

Kaitlin starts shaking her head harder. “This wasn’t any ordinary taser, like the kind you’d see security guards use on a streaker at a baseball game. This was some powerful, high-grade, government taser. She still hasn’t woken up.”

Krystal gently puts her head on Daniella’s chest and listens. “She’s barely breathing…” She puts two fingers on Daniella’s neck. “And she has a heartbeat, but is very faint. Which is good, but she definitely needs medical attention.”

Matt turns to Krystal. “We thought of that, but what are we supposed to do? We’re minors.”

“We’ll think of something. Come on, guys.”

Krystal sits in a chair in Daniella’s hospital room. Kaitlin is in the chair next to her, and Daniella’s prone figure is before them, attached to wires and machines. Matt is on the other side of the bed, pacing back and forth. Kaitlin is holding Daniella’s hand and Krystal has her hand on Kaitlin’s shoulder.

Nathaniel walk through the doors and goes to the foot of Daniella’s bed. No one says a word as they watch him brace himself on the footboard of the bed and put his head down. After half a minute of silence, Nathaniel opens his mouth. “How long?”

Kaitlin’s voice is barely a whisper. “A few hours.”

“Well why can’t they wake her up?”

Krystal tightens her hold on Kaitlin and speaks for her. “They don’t know what’s wrong with her. They say her body went into shock from some trauma, they’re guessing… She’s in a coma.”

Nathaniel’s head snaps up as he begins to explode on Kaitlin. “How could you let this happen?! You were supposed to listen to me! Didn’t I warn you?”

Matt steps in front of his crying sister to face Nathaniel. “Hey, you told me to keep them safe and I didn’t. It’s my fault, I screwed up. Don’t blame her, blame me.”

“Yeah, you’re right; what were you thinking?! Did you even realize how dangerous—”

“Nathaniel!” Krystal stands up, practically knocking her chair over. “We are in a hospital. It’s no use playing the blame game, and even if it would help, this is neither the time, nor the place.”

Knock, knock, knock. Alex pokes his head around the door. “Sorry guys, I just wanted to let you know some technical stuff, but I could come back later if this is a bad time.”

Nathaniel sighs and walks away from everyone else in the room. “No, now’s fine. Come on in.”

Alex steps inside the doorway and closes the door behind him. “Okay, well I messed around with the computer system here a lot. I mean a lot. When Daniella is all better and we sneak her out of here, there will be no trace left of her ever having been here. And just in case something gets left behind, her name is listed as Jamie Singer. Oh, also I got us five rooms at the Delta hotel, all top floor and next to each other. We won’t have to worry about paying for that.”

Nathaniel has started pacing the room. “Okay, we can use the Delta as our base of operations for now. Anything else?”

“Some stuff about the government operation that I found out.”

“I wanna hear everything you know.”

This is too much for me right now. “I’m gunna go out for a bit.” Krystal stands up, but then leans down to whisper in Kaitlin’s ear. “Are you going to be alright here?” Kaitlin nods her head. “Okay, sweetie.” Krystal squeezes her shoulder and walks out of the room, motioning for Matt to take her seat as she goes out the door.

Krystal closes the door and catches her breath for a second. This is too crazy. She lets go of the door handle and walks down the hallway to the waiting room. Dimitri, Stephanie, Sophia, and Max are all sitting in silence. As she approaches, the boys continue to stare into space, caught up in their own heads, but the girls eagerly look to Krystal. She sadly shakes her head and the faces of the other girls drop, then turn back to picking their nails or unenthusiastically flipping through a magazine. Krystal goes to Max, crouching next to his chair. “Hey.”

Max continues to stare at the wall. “Hey.”

“Are you okay?”

“I am now… You know, it’s crazy how you can look Death right in the face, knowing you’re going to it, and then suddenly being snapped back.”

“…You were so lucky.”

“Yeah… lucky…”

“…Max, where is Scott?”

“I think he went to the vending machines down the hall.”

“Thank you.” Krystal gets up and begins down another hallway, avoiding Dimitri’s gaze as she departs. After a ways, she finds Scott standing in from of a vending machine, hands in his pockets, just staring. Everyone is so stuck in their heads… Way too much has happened in one day. Krystal slowly walks up to Scott. “Can’t make a decision?”

“Huh?” Scott snaps out of his reverie, surprised to see Krystal. “Oh, sorry. Just… a lot on my mind.’

“What happened? I mean, before you came here. Max is super freaked out.”

“Oh… well… Max was shot. He almost died. It was all my fault, I was pressuring him…”

“But… he’s fine now.”

“Because I *healed him… just barely. It took everything out of me, I almost passed out. But if it hadn’t been for me, it never would have happened…”

“But if it hadn’t been for you, he would have died.”

“Yeah, I guess.”

“Scott, stop blaming yourself. Everything worked out fine, and maybe you learned enough to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future.”

Scott stares at her for a second, then breathes a sigh of relief. “You know what, you’re right. Thank you.” They hug and Scott begins to walk past Krystal after they let go, but Krystal puts her arm out to stop him.

“Wait... there’s one more thing…”

“What is it?”

“Well, you can heal people, and… I think Daniella is seriously hurt, her family is all freaking out.”

Scott’s face drops and his eyes dive to the floor. “I… I can’t.”

“What? What do you mean?”

“I mean, I care and all, I don’t want to see her hurt, but… there’s nothing I can do. Not for now, at least.”

“I still don’t get it, Scott.”

“I told you when I healed Max I almost passed out. Healing takes a lot out of energy out of me. It would take a lot of energy to heal Daniella fully, energy that I don’t have right now. “

“Oh… well, when will you have it?”

“To completely heal her? Two days, maybe. I’m not really sure.”

“Oh. Okay. Sorry to bug you about it…”

“It’s fine.” Scott brushes past Krystal and walks down the hall, his face showing the he felt anything but fine.

Krystal collapses on a bench and leans her head against the wall, closing her eyes. I can’t take all this. Way too many bad things have happened in such a short amount of time. What a way for everyone to come together… Well, almost everyone…

April wakes up to the cool sensation of concrete on her cheek. Opening her eyes, it seems all she sees is cement. She lifts her head up and looks around to find herself in a small, bare room with a black door on one wall. She is quickly aware of a weight on both of her wrists and looks down to find metal cuffs around them. She is shackled to two four-foot chains attached to the floor.
