Summary

Synopsis

Finally, home at last. Dimitri walks into his house and collapses on the couch. Florida is nice, but I’ll take home any day. Shelly walks in the front door and waves to get Dimitri’s attention. “Di, mom and dad said you have to come help bring the luggage in.”

“Oh, alright, anything for you, princess,” Dimitri smiles. Shelly laughs and runs back outside, Dimitri chasing her out the door.

Once all the bags are sitting in the living room and his parents have gone to bed for a nap after the long morning, Dimitri makes Shelly a sandwich. When she is finished, he brings her upstairs to her bed, then goes to his own room for a little nap. Just when he is almost out, he hears a voice that erases any possibility for sleep: “Dimitri, can you hear me?”

Nate? What are you doing? I know we haven’t talked in a while, but that doesn’t mean you can just invade my mind to start a conversation.

“Dimitri, stop it. I did it to warn you. A group of men will be coming to your house very soon to take you away, you need to leave now!”

But I just got home.

“It doesn’t matter, you need to fly to Krystal and get her away from her house. Then fly with her to Sophia’s and have Krystal convince her to leave with you.”

Where are we supposed to go?

Fly north, go to Canada. I doubt anywhere in the country is safe right now. We’ll all meet up there.”

...Ok, but you better be right about this. Dimitri grabs a hoodie from his closet. Who knows how far into Canada we’re going? This might come in handy. He checks on Shelly, who is fast asleep, kisses her on the forehead, and goes back to his room. Dimitri opens the window and flies out of it, heading south.

A few minutes later, he arrives at Krystal’s house. Dimitri flies around to the back of the house, where Krystal’s bedroom is. He levitates outside her open window, looking in, to see her reading a book with her back to him. Man, I hate to disturb her, but... Dimitri raps on the screen window. Krystal jumps up and whips around to face him. Her expression changes from fear to bewilderment when she recognizes that it is Dimitri.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came to save you.”

“Save me? From what, exactly?”

“From some men that want to capture you. They were coming to get me, but Nate found out and warned me to leave. He said I wasn’t the only one in trouble, so I came to get you.”

“Wow, that’s scary. But why would they want me if they were coming after you?”

“Because it’s not like I committed some crime and it’s the cops coming after me. I didn’t do anything wrong!”

“You shouldn’t jump to conclusions about people, especially the people you should consider friends. I didn’t mean it like that; I’m just trying to figure this out.”

“We aren’t the only people they are going after; I’m guessing they’re trying to round us up because of what we can do. Nate said he doesn’t think anywhere in the country is safe right now.”

“Jeez, that’s crazy. So what are we supposed to do?”

“Nate told me to get you and take you to get Sophia, then to take you two to Canada. Apparently a bunch of us are going to meet there.”

“Do you think we’re going to try and stop what they are doing?”

“I honestly have no idea, but I have a feeling that’s where this is headed. I’m sure its gunna take a long time before this is over, too.”

“So does that mean we can’t come back home until we end this?”

“I would guess so.”

“Well, I need to at least explain this to my mom and dad—”

“No! We can’t tell them anything. What if the men rush in and try to force information out of our parents? Or worse, our siblings? We have to keep them in the dark for their own safety. It may seem cruel, but it’s the best option we have.”

“…Fine. Can I at least put jeans and a long-sleeved shirt on?”

“Okay, but hurry up, they could show up at any time.”

“Then turn around!”

“Ha ha, fine, fine.” Dimitri makes the wind holding him up turn him around. Wow, her backyard is so beautiful. Fancy trees, a patio with furniture, a paved walkway, a bench by the flowers. It would be so hard for me to leave this behind...

“Okay, I’m ready now.” As Dimitri turns back around, Krystal puts her hand through the screen of the window. He grabs it and lifts himself up, pulling her with him through her window. He holds onto her and has the wind push her up so that they are eye to eye.

“How should we do this?”

“I could hold your waist from behind you so it’ll seem like you’re flying on your own...”

“I’ve always thought flying would be amazing.”

“Alright then, you have to trust me.”

“And the wind.”

“Right. And the wind.” They both smile at each other as Krystal lets go of Dimitri, but he has the wind hold her up and turn her around. Once he is holding her waist, they fly off.

They land on the roof of Sophia’s house a minute or two later. “Let’s see, Sophia’s bedroom should be right about... here.” Krystal wanders around the roof, finally picking one place to stand. “Okay, you stay here. It might be weird enough for Mrs. Oakley to see me suddenly running out of Sophia’s room with her, but it would be twenty times worse if me and a guy ran out with her.”

“So what am I supposed to do?”

“Just wait here, and don’t be too obvious. We’ll come out to the back, pick us up there.”

“Alright, don’t be too long.”

“I’ll try my best.” Krystal winks and falls through the floor.

Now for the boring part... After a few minutes of sitting in the middle of the roof, Dimitri decides to walk toward the back of the roof to see if the girls are out there yet. But as he gets up, he notices a big black van slowly pulling up to Sophia’s house. Oh shoot! He immediately gets back down close to the roof. Shoot, shoot, what do I do? I gotta help them, but I can’t let the men see me, either. Aaaahhh, I’m no good at this, I need some help... wait, isn’t that connection Nate made with me still open? Dimitri searches his mind, and feels the connection deep in the back of his brain. He pulls it to the forefront of his head. Nate! Nate, please be there, I really need you right now!
