Page Adding Checklist

So I was thinking of somehow doing a checklist of things that need to be done when a new article is added. For instance, when somebody adds a location, they should update Portal:Locations and Template:Location. When somebody adds a Graphic Novel Character, they should update Portal:Graphic Novel Characters and Template:GNcharacternav ... You get my point. Any thoughts on where such a checklist might go? I was thinking one of the help pages, unless you had a better idea. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:51, 1 January 2007 (EST)

  • Sounds about right. Help:Editing has a (small) section about adding new articles that could be linked out to something like Help:New article checklist. There's already a smidge of info on adding a new episode which could be moved into the new article.--Hardvice (talk) 11:26, 1 January 2007 (EST)

Integrating Story Arcs

  • I had some ideas on how we can integrate some information about the story arcs. One thing is that Season One is getting a bit unwieldy. Maybe we can break it into individual articles for the arcs (like [Season One:Are You on the List? or something) and summarize the arcs on the main Season One page. We can also use the arcs to break Portal:Episodes into subpages, which we'll have to do sometime soon.--Hardvice (talk) 19:18, 2 January 2007 (EST)
    • I love it! I've been wanting to do that since I first read about Heroes, even before I ever caught an episode. (Yes, I'm a latecomer to the show - I've actually still never seen Genesis all the way through.) I especially like the idea for the portal page - makes the most amount of sense there. As for the Season One page, I kind of like that it's a list of all the episodes, albeit a bit long (and growing). Splitting the eps is a bit of dangerous ground - it's not really canonical, and there's no guarantee that eps will continue in arcs as such ... But I say let's go for it - we'll cross problematic bridges as we come to them. I'm not opposed to changing the layout of Season One - just not sure it's the best place for it. Let's try it an see... - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:29, 2 January 2007 (EST)

References Split

Speaking of splitting portals, I was thinking the Portal:References might need to be split soon. Maybe a simple subcat like "Movies" or "Comics" or something. Too soon? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:29, 2 January 2007 (EST)

AOTW Template

Nice job! That should also make things easier if we ever have to protect the main page.--Hardvice (talk) 15:26, 3 January 2007 (EST)

  • Just want to say Thanks for The advise and Help on this N00b. How do I align my Sig to the Right?
    ~ ~ ~ ~ Red = 10:34, 26 September 2021
    • If you want to have it automatically align it, just add the colons to the text you typed in Special:Preferences. But it would be better to put a <br> before them and put the tildes immediately after your comment, and not on the next line ... that way, you still get a line break but it doesn't break the formatting for other people's comments.

In other words, to get the signature you're using now, change the nickname field to "<br>:::: ~ ~ ~ ~ [[User:Red|Red]] = ". Then, instead of putting it on a new line, put it right after your comment, like this: "comment~~~~" It will auto-insert the line break

Sources

  • Help:Sources Doesn't Tell me How to use History tab only Talks about type of Sources.
    ~ ~ ~ Red = ~~~~~
    • I was linking to Help:Sources to explain why some things like Niki's power, etc., don't get added to articles. As for the Diff/Hist rollback, it's an admin-only feature. You're better off just recreating the edit. You can click a version in History, click edit, and click save, but it will undo all subsequent changes. Again, it's better just to redo the edit manually.--Hardvice (talk) 23:48, 4 January 2007 (EST)

Comic Book Guru Needed!

I understand you have a greater depth of knowledge about comic books than I do. Am I right that the image of D.L. outside the jail is referencing a comic book hero? I feel like there's a picture of Spider-man or Superman or Batman sitting in a similar fashion on a gargoyle, or on top of a building. I'd like to add it to references, but I'm not sure if it goes on Marvel Comics or DC Comics. Help! - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:48, 6 January 2007 (EST)

  • You see similar images in both Spiderman and Batman. --Ted C 11:40, 9 January 2007 (EST)
    • One might could argue it's more of an artistic motif than one for a particular superhero character. The image in question echoes Frank Miller's style a bit. However, it's more a classic generic pose. I call it the Gargoyle. Pretty much any time an artist wants to show the hero keeping vigil over the city, this is a way of conveying that. Nightwing (DC's Dick Grayson post Robin) has been like this before. Daredevil (Marvel) has been posed like this a lot in various angles over the years, and other heroes. The Huntress, again from DC, comes to mind. BatGirl had a similar pose during the Crisis on Infinite Earths, drawn by George Perez back in 1985. Spider-Man's been like this too. However, in the image in question, he's not keeping vigil over anything. So the classic pose doesn't carry the weight it could. DL's not taking on any mantle. He's not dedicating himself to saving anybody. He's just surviving. Maybe that's a visually striking way of showing how this series echoes the vigilante genre in comics, but approaches it from a less idealized and optimistic (modern) perspective. --ZachsMind 13:20, 1 February 2007 (EST)

Delete pages

How do I nominate pages for deletion? On that other site, all you have to do is add a [[template:delete]]. ---- Ohmyn0.jpgOhmyn0talk.jpg 01:06, 9 January 2007 (EST)

That's the right spot. You can also just talk about it on the discussion page. Another good spot is on Heroes Wiki:Administrator Portal. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:33, 9 January 2007 (EST)

Family Trees

  • Okay, I got an image-map one set up at Petrelli (disambig). Lemme know what you think. If the consensus is positive, I'll get cracking on the others.--Hardvice (talk) 14:05, 9 January 2007 (EST)
  • It looks fantastic! My two concerns (and I don't think there's much we can do about either):
  1. This looks fantastic for a full family like the Petrellis. When it comes to the Deveauxs, it'll just be a straight line from Charles to Simone. But again, not much we can do about that.
  2. This is really minor and nit-picky. Is there anyway to make only the pictures linked, and have the rest of the tree part unlinked? If not, not a big deal.
    • Hmmm. It's just an image, so it's linked just like every other image -- to the image page. There's one trick I can try to pull off ... lemme see if it'll work.--Hardvice (talk) 15:50, 9 January 2007 (EST)
    • Yup. Worked fine.--Hardvice (talk) 16:08, 9 January 2007 (EST)
      • I know that was a minor detail, but it I'm impressed - what did you do? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:51, 9 January 2007 (EST)
        • I split it into three layers: the background image, a transparent layer with invisible text which covers up the background layer so the link doesn't work, and the images.--Hardvice (talk) 18:17, 9 January 2007 (EST)
          • Soo... could you add a layer of cream cheese? hehehe - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:29, 9 January 2007 (EST)
  • I love it. We can allways hope we get largerr families in the future. Who knows, it seems strange genes attract each other within the Heores universe.
    • None of the trees are matching up for me. The pictures and links are, but the lines and m.s are all sortsa crazy for me. ---- Ohmyn0.jpgOhmyn0talk.jpg 18:42, 9 January 2007 (EST)
      • I'm in the process of adjusting them. Once they're done, you may need to reload around your browser cache (CTRL+F5, probably) to get everything to behave.--Hardvice (talk) 18:47, 9 January 2007 (EST)

  • What browser are you using? I'd guess it doesn't support CSS positioning, but if the portals all look right, it must.--Hardvice (talk) 18:51, 9 January 2007 (EST)
    • IE7 ---- Ohmyn0.jpgOhmyn0talk.jpg 18:52, 9 January 2007 (EST)
      • Oh wow. Positioning is in fact broken in IE7. I'm guessing Category:Characters looks crazy, too? It does on mine. I'll have to see what I can do.--Hardvice (talk) 18:56, 9 January 2007 (EST)
        • Looks like masking out the image link caused it. Blame Ryan. I'll see if I can get it working in IE7, but if I can't, I'll just unmask the backgrounds.--Hardvice (talk) 19:04, 9 January 2007 (EST)
          • That's fine, blame me. :) Like I said, I don't really mind if the background space links - minor detail. - The Scapegoat (talk) 19:09, 9 January 2007 (EST)

Principal Characters Image Map

Were you going to make an image map out of Image:Principal Characters.JPG? I think it would look really awesome in Category:Season One Principal Cast, sort of like Template:heromap is on Category:Characters, but the portals remain as they are. (Does that make any sense?) I'm willing to try my hand at making the image map (I feel so liberated now!), but I'd want to spend some time on it - probably not until MLK day. (If we're going to do an image map, is there a larger version of the pic of which you're aware?) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:19, 10 January 2007 (EST)

  • Yeah, I forgot all about it, what with Christmas and all. As far as I know, that's the only version of the picture available online. There might be a scan of it somewhere, but I haven't seen one. We can blow it up a little, but probably not much. Given your newfound imagemap powers, if you'd like to take a crack at it, be my guest (the only difference here is getting the individual images, and that you need to write down the coordinates they belong at since they have to be more precise than Template:Locationmap, but otherwise it's the same process).--Hardvice (talk) 15:42, 10 January 2007 (EST)
    • Okay, two things. 1, the image came from Time magazine, right? Any idea which issue - I'll head to the library so I can scan it. 2, in writing down the coordinates, how do I know where to find the coordinates? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:47, 10 January 2007 (EST)
      • What image editor do you use? Most show the coordinates of your selection box in the status bar. They start with the upper left corner, which is what we need, and display either the bottom right coordinates or the size of the selection, which you don't need. (You can, of course, fudge it like Locationmap, but it can take seemigly hours to get them lined up exactly, which is No Fun At All. As for the image, I'm not even 100% sure it was in the print version -- it may have been an onlin-only feature -- but I'll see what I can find out.--Hardvice (talk) 15:53, 10 January 2007 (EST)
        • Oh, yes, I see it now. Thanks. I'll get to work on that, um, maybe on Monday. (Going camping on Friday. Can't wait for the cold, he says sarcastically.) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:24, 10 January 2007 (EST)

Spoiler Images

  • Incidentally, the thumbnails you uploaded came from here[1], just enter your search text and it'll bring up thumbnails of promotional images. Unfortunately, you need a Press Pass login with NBC to get the full scale images and the License agreement appears quote onerous with regard to what you can do with the images. At the very least, to comply with the License agreement, we need to have an explicit credit to NBC Universal wherever applicable. --Orne 00:42, 11 January 2007 (EST)
    • Actually, I capped all those from the promo clips on NBC.com.--Hardvice (talk) 00:45, 11 January 2007 (EST)
      • Sorry for the confusion then. There's a whole array of photos that are shuffling around 9th Wonders that are sourced from the NBC promo archive. Many of them looked similar. --Orne 00:58, 11 January 2007 (EST)
        • Are they any bigger? The ones I got are puny because I had to use the YouTube FLVs (it's too darned hard to pause the online vids to ALT+PRT SCRN since the promos cut so fast ... I can export the FLVs to VirtualDub and step through frame-by-frame) and they are really crap resolution. We could use bigger ones--if we're going to use them at all. I have zero interest in the Spoilers section, though, and so far nobody seems to want to use them, so maybe we should play on the safe side and just delete 'em.
          • I don't see any interest in them either - neither by me nor anyone else that has used them. They're cool, but I, myself, don't care to put them anywhere. I say delete them - but good job finding them. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:55, 11 January 2007 (EST)
          • I think you need a press pass to get full-size promotional images - this is the stuff that makes it into magazine articles. That road sounds like a conflict of interest, because it converts us from a fan-site to a promotional junket. --Orne 09:22, 11 January 2007 (EST)

Idea for Easier Maintenance on Portal:Minor Characters

So I just made small change to the minor characters portal, and I then had to go back on all 4 minor character portals and update the portalCharacterSmall navigations on the bottom. Maybe it's not worth it, but I thought it'd be easier if that were just a simple template in the bottom. That way we could just update one template, and they all fix themselves. I might take a stab at creating that little template soon. Thoughts? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 12:26, 14 January 2007 (EST)

  • I took a stab at it into Template:PortalCharNav. Let me know what you think. --Orne 16:57, 17 January 2007 (EST)
    • Looks great. We just need to install it on the portals and we should be good to go. Thanks! One question though: since the template is testing for "Minor Characters" (with quotes), and not Minor Characters (sans quotes), do we need to use quotes in the template calls?--Hardvice (talk) 17:04, 17 January 2007 (EST)
      • I just fixed it to not require the "". I am going through the portals fixing it now. In the future, we should only have to edit the nav template, and everything should be set. --Orne 17:07, 17 January 2007 (EST)
        • Awesome job! That will make life much, much easier.--Hardvice (talk) 17:10, 17 January 2007 (EST)

The Joys and Perils of Airline Travel

So I'm back ... almost three days late. *Sigh*. I managed to pop in a couple times over the last couple days. Did I miss anything major?--Hardvice (talk) 23:55, 16 January 2007 (EST)

Welcome back - you were missed. I noticed you got back later than you thought. Hope everything's okay.

You didn't miss anything too major, considering you're the main contributor here. A few things (in order particular no):

  1. There's some good discussion over at Women in Refrigerators (but I think you contributed to it).
  2. There's always a bunch of screencaps to get.
  3. The new graphic novel rocks - and apparently they're going to have a sneak preview before Heroes on Monday - what's that all about?
  4. I figured out how to make image maps - go me!
  5. Are you up for decoding some 1337?
  6. sigh Split personality needs some work.
  7. Did you notice Admin upgraded MediaWiki?
Oh, I don't know ... have fun exploring! :) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:06, 17 January 2007 (EST)
I saw that we can redirect to sections now ... that rocks!
Very cool. Part of the upgrade. I went and redid some of the NYC jumps. Others could be done, if you want.
What are the numbers on Recent Changes?
Net characters added/removed. Helps gauge the degree of change represented by the diff. Incidentally if the change is -500 or less it will apparently make it bold on the RC list as a way of alerting that a large amount of text was removed (potentially vandalism). (Admin 00:15, 17 January 2007 (EST))
+ and - bytes (or characters) — bigger numbers = bigger changes. Really big changes get bolded, I think.
Just finished Wireless Part 4 and I agree ... majorly interesting.
I'm really curious how they're going to integrate Hana into the show. I also like the idea of a 4-part GN - it allows for such greater character building. Plus, globe-trotter: Israel, Alaska, Tanzania, and ... Montana? Phew!
The image maps look great, and the article for the Homecoming paintings is really slick.
Thanks ... it's getting there... I'd like to add a bit more content.
Any decision on the Character Box template update?

Main Page

  • The template approach for the main page is a good idea. I just want to make sure you know I didn't protect the main page against edits entirely, I only locked out moves since moving the main page is something that really requires coordination with me in order to be done right (updating config files, etc.). "Other" category for locales

Where the heck does the belong? It's not education/research, residence, law enforcement. Maybe business? We should probably make an "Other" portal, and include the campaign hq there, too. And maybe the Union Wells locker room - it's not really education, now, is it? What do you think? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:16, 23 January 2007 (EST)

"The email" Thing

This isn't about those email notification problems I am having.

I did not know until earlier today, when Ryangibsonstewart told me, that I was breaking redirects by changing the capitalization of the sections title. I am not an experienced MediaWiki Contributor (my previous experience was correcting blatantly incorrect text in Wikipedia).

The only reason is that a couple friends, who I was showing what I was contributing was pointing out that the uncapitalized entries were sticking out like a sore thumb when almost all of the entries are. They, not users of wikis directly, thought it looked sloppy, and I wouldn't go that far, but thought it an easy fix.

When I changed it and the whole discussion about which way the wiki winds would blow, no one brought up anything about changing redirects and breaking them. As for what the community wanted, every time I asked if it would be OK if I just capitalized the E, no matter what page I put it on, it wasn't answered, and half the time it was deleted without any email notice. From this I figured the only way to get a response one way or the other was just to do it.

Well now I have my answer, but still I assume that there is a way to format the markup like an internal link. If so, I think that the community or you should decide on a default formatting for titles that also redirect. Even if that default formatting is none (leave it as it is). Whatever the decision is it should be remarked in the markup someway so other contributers/editors like me don't put both you, other members and them through this again. Not unless they miss the remarks though.

But then again that is the opinion of one guy, what do you think? --WolvenSpectre 12:17, 29 January 2007 (EST)
