Peter Sambala is the biological son of Arthur Sambala and Angela Rahl, and adopted son of biological uncle George and his wife Molly. He is a second generation evolved human with the ability to duplicate the abilities of other evolved humans and replicate them at will, and the first non-hereditary confessor in history. Initially ignorant to his true parentage, Peter grew up under foster care a normal child. Taken by Darken Rahl at a young age and employed as a kitchen slave, Peter's standing in Rahl's administration rocketed after the discovery of his ability. Peter's numerous acquired skills have propelled him to becoming Rahl's right hand man- a role which he initially took with great stride, before a vision of the future convinced Peter to aid the seeker in his mission against Rahl. He has since remained neutral in his actions, aiding and impeding Richard, whilst at the same time dealing with the issues that have resulted from him acquring so many abilities.

Evolved Human Abilities

Peter's base power allows him to duplicate and then replicate the abilities of other evolved humans. The act of mimicking produces a momentary blue glow to Peter's eyes as his DNA reconfigures to accept the new ability.

Initially, Peter's understanding of his power was very limited, and it took great mental effort to "synchronise" his mind with the person whose ability he was after. After mimicking his first abilities by mistake, Peter was shown to become frustrated in attempting to mimic others, especially when the target was of a very determined or devoted mentality. Peter mimicked Issac's ability of Precognition passively whilst they were both in an opium induced state, indicating that a level of mental parity is necessary for the mimic to occur. He acquired Telepathy through pre-knowledge and deceit after stirring Matt Parkman into a state of cold rage- a state he knew well, indicating that emotional understanding (empathy) may be vital for the mimic to occur. After acquiring Telepathy, Peter often used that ability to force his target's minds into mental parity so as to acquire their powers. As Peter became more adept at Telepathy, this process became much simpler and quicker for him.

In Dying of the Light Peter's base ability was modified by Darken Rahl's subtractive magic, allowing for him to use it to acquire Kahlan Amnell's confession power, which he did. However, it also meant that those abilities he had acquired through his base power were ineffective against anyone possessing subtractive magic, although not entirely obsolete. Peter has shown to be able to use his Telekinetic and Telepathic powers partially against such people, and his passive abilities, such as Rapid Cell Regeneration are unaffected too.

In Season 2 Peter mimicked his brother Nathan's ability of Intuitive aptitude to understand how to control an explosive ability. With this power came a greater understanding of all the abilities he possessed, including his own, meaning he no longer seemed to need to use Telepathy to achieve mental parity. It is still somewhat unknown the exact nature of Peter's ability, in the sense of what exactly is needed for the mimic to occur, but it is now clear that Peter has mastered the act of mimicking as he can now do so at will, with little effort.

In Dying of the Light all of Peter's abilities were taken away by his father, however his base power was unaffected suggesting that Arthur's ability and Peter's ability are either similar or potentially two sides of the same ability. Possibly due to Darken Rahl's modifications Peter also retained Kahlan's confession power- which he used to defeat his father. Peter has since shown that he needs to use either that or his base power to counteract The hunger of Intuitive aptitude lest he be forced to rip open their heads the same way his brother must.

Abilities Acquired:

Prior to having his powers stolen by his father, Peter had mimicked or acquired the following abilities:

In Dying of the Light Peter was stripped of his powers by Arthur Sambala, with the exception of his confessive powers and his base ability. After confessing Arthur, Peter used his base ability to gain Arthur's ability which he used against him to re-acquire all the abilities he had lost, plus those other acquired abilities of Arthur already had. He has since used his father's power, in addition to his base ability and others to acquire the following abilities, on top of the ones documented above:

Notes

  • In Confession, Peter used his base ability to acquire Kahlan Amnell's confession powers. Whilst his ability usually only allows him to acquire other evolved human abilities, Darken Rahl's subtractive magic modifications allowed him to use it to copy Kahlan's powers. This made Peter the first non-hereditary human confessor, and the first male confessor since the great wizard war, although he has never been formally accepted into the order. Whilst Peter did use his base ability to acquire Kahlan's powers, it is accepted that they should not be included in his absorbed abilities as they were unaffected by Arthur's Power absorption.
  • In Brand New Truths Peter demonstrated the ability of Omnilingualism when he spoke to men of the mud people fluently despite having never met them. He claimed to Jennsen that he had "picked up" the ability previously, although it was never observed how or from whom.
  • In Truth or Consequences Peter mimicked his brother's ability of Intuitive aptitude to help him understand how to control his newly acquired radioactive power. Unbeknownst to Peter he, in using that ability he fell under the influence of "The hunger" which later caused him, in the same way that his brother did, to cut open a victim's head to gain his ability. He would continue to be affected by the power of the hunger, until he learnt to resist it long enough to use his base ability to satisfy it's need for abilities without hurting the benefactor. It is worth noting that in the time Arthur held this ability, he did not demonstrate any aspects of the hunger.
  • Peter re-acquired all his lost abilties from his father in "My Way Now". Technically all those abilities should now read "from Arthur Sambala", but it has been left the way it is to recognise the initial acquisition. However, on the character pane, the abilities are listed in order from the most recent absorption, listing Arthur's base ability, followed by the ones Arthur had prior to stripping Peter, then Peter's re-acquired ones. Those blocks are then sorted by the order Peter exibited them.
