White Beard decided to keep the location of his camp a secret and called it the Hidden Fortress. Kensei’s journey to find the Hidden Fortress is known as The Trials of Takezo Kensei.
In Chapter 2, “The Trial of the Fire Scroll”, the year documented is in 1671. Takezo Kensei was the one man standing in White Beard’s way of conquering all of Japan since the Battle of Twelve Swords. Kensei must find White Beard’s Hidden Fortress in order to defeat him. His first task is to find the Fire Scroll. Curator Tatsuya Atsumi documents that the Fire Scroll contains strategies, secrets, and locations of White Beard’s operations.
In Chapter 3, “The Trial of the Hidden Fortress”, the year documented is in 1671. Professor Karen Chamberlin documents that Takezo Kensei must find the missing piece to White Beard’s map, which the Black Bear of Sakashita is guarding. The bear’s description changes in different versions of the story, but regardless, Kensei is the victor. Kensei now had the location of White Beard’s Hidden Fortress. Curator Tatsuya Atsumi claims that White Beard’s army at the Hidden Fortress was numerous because it was the largest in all of Japan numbering between 70,000 and 200,000. Kensei fought eleven days until it was only Kensei and White Beard left alive. Kensei defeated White Beard and rescued Japan.
