Heroes for Autism is a one night only fund raiser event. Proceeds of more than $75,000 dollars were donated to Autism Speaks, an autism research and advocacy organization.

The Event

The event took place on Sunday, April 19, 2009, at The Avalon Hollywood in Los Angeles. Tickets prices started at $70, and ranged up to $200 for VIP tickets. The evening began with a VIP cocktail reception and a silent auction featuring artwork designed and created by the cast and crew of Heroes as well as other artists. "Band from TV" and Wendy & Lisa performed in a concert. Guests included members of the autistic community, Heroes cast and crew, and other celebrities such as Amy Brenneman, Shawn Johnson, and Cheryl Burke. The event was emceed by Rainn Wilson. Heroes for Autism was produced in part by Brand Consulting (an event and marketing firm) and by Haus (a design firm). The event was sponsored in part by HBO and had in-kind donations from NBC Universal. Other partners and sponsors included Grace Ellay, Renaissance Hollywood Hotel & Spa, and First Steps Early Intervention Program. Heroes for Autism raised more than $75,000 for Autism Speaks.

VIP Cocktail Reception

VIP tickets cost $200 and the cocktail reception was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Appetizers and cocktails were served. VIP guests were invited to take photographs of the art. Heroes fans and members of the autism community were given the chance to meet the cast of Heroes, the artists, and the musicians. Rainn Wilson emceed and Peter Bell (of Autism Speaks) gave a welcome speech.

Silent Auction

Every piece of art exhibited at the showcase was available for purchase through the silent auction. There were over 80 pieces of art on display from 24 artists. The art was created in a range of media, including photography, painting, drawing, and animation, among others. Beside each piece of art was a clipboard where participants could place their name and bid. The auction was held until 9:00 p.m. and at 9:15 p.m. the winners were announced. The art pieces were then packaged and either taken home that night, or delivered the following week. Because all purchases were considered donations, they were also considered tax deductible.

Following the VIP cocktail reception, "Band From TV" performed for the crowd. The band featured Greg Grunberg, Adrian Pasdar, James Denton, Jesse Spencer, and Bob Guiney. Then Wendy & Lisa performed music from the Heroes, as well as music from their CD, White Flags of Winter Chimneys. Meanwhile, Heroes footage, produced by Allan Arkush, played in the background.

The Artists

Several artists donated their work to the event. Greg Cohen served as the curator for the event. He chose photography from the Heroes cast and crew to showcase alongside work by autistic artists. Artists included Greg Cohen, Nate Goodman, Chris Haston, Nick Infield, Charlie Lieberman, Jamie Maxtone-Graham, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Hayden Panettiere, Tim Sale, Milo Ventimiglia, and Joey Watts.

Autism Speaks

Autism Speaks was founded in February 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of a child with autism. (Bob Wright also served as the chief executive officer of NBC and NBC Universal for more than twenty years.) Autism Speaks has grown into the largest autism science and advocacy organization in the United States. The organization funds research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and a cure for autism. Autism Speaks also works to increase awareness of disorders on the autism spectrum. They are also an advocate for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.
