Synopsis
The episode opens up with narration by an unseen man. Meanwhile, a different man, Peter Petrelli is seen standing on a building, then falling. Peter then wakes up in the home of a patient under his care.
Genesis begins with a view of a man, Peter Petrelli standing on the edge of a tall building in New York City. He's then seen falling face forward towards the street below.

Peter is sitting in an apartment as a woman, Simone Deveaux comes in and startles Peter. Peter tells Simone how he's having these strange dreams, but doesn't elaborate. Peter is a nurse watching over Simone's father, Charles Deveaux who's been comatose for a week. Simone expresses her thanks to Peter for his help. He claims it's his job, but Simone says he's like a son to him. Peter makes a remark about that making them "brother and sister" and how it would be awkward if he ever wanted to ask her out which ends up making them both feel awkward.

Next is an Indian professor named Mohinder Suresh discussing man and evolution. He tries to debunk the belief that man is the "pinnacle of evolution" and instead suggests that cockroaches, with their ability to live without their head for weeks, not eating for months, and being resistant to radiation, may in fact be more evolved than man. He points out that humans only use a small percentage of their total brain power and that using more could actually result in powers such as teleportation, tissue regeneration, and levitation. According to him the Human Genome Project has shown that we're already evolving at an accelerated rate. A solumn man appears at the door, and Mohinder dismisses his class. The man informs him that Mohinder's father, Chandra, was killed driving a taxi in New York City. Mohinder explains how his father was pursuing some radical evolutionary ideas and that his father believed someone was trying to steal his research. Mohinder believes that's the reason he was actually killed. Mohinder goes to Chandra's apartment in India to get his papers and research.

In Chandra's apartment Mohinder finds a file named "Genesis" with a number of folders referring to different powers. Specifically there is a cassette tape labeled "Teleportation". On the wall he finds a large world map on the wall with pins in different locations connected by strings. We see on the other side of the wall is a man answering a cell phone. The man tells the caller that all of Chandra's materials were left behind except for his laptop and asks for a team to collect all the info. The man senses someone else is in the apartment and hangs up, but Mohinder leaves before the man can see him.

In Las Vegas a woman, Niki Sanders, is laying on a bed performing a strip tease in front of a camera which is connected to a laptop. She lets the viewer know their time is up and after a rude exchange she disconnects him. On her way out of the garage she passes a mirror and looks into it suspiciously. She enters the house and goes to wake up her son Micah, but he's already up building a new logic board for his computer. She tells Micah that he needs to get ready for school, but he's already ready and packed his own lunch. She claims she was working to pay the bills. The doorbell rings and she tells Micah to get his stuff and wait by the back door. She looks out the window and finds two thugs at her front door. Micah and Niki escape through the back and speed away as the thugs break down the door.
In Madras, India, university professor Mohinder Suresh, the narrator from before, is speaking to his class. After news of his father's death in New York, Mohinder suspects that his father was murdered due to his genetics research. He goes to his father's local apartment to look for clues and to finish his research. However, before Mohinder can thoroughly analyse his father's findings, he realizes someone is still in the apartment when that person's phone rings. As the intruder talks on his phone about Mohinder's father and the research, Mohinder narrowly escapes.

The episode turns to an amateur video of a teenage girl climbing to the top of a large metal structure about 80 feet high. She climbs over the rail and lets herself fall to the ground screaming all the way down. The cameraman, a boy named Zach, runs to her and she gets up. Her shoulder is dislocated, but she pops it back it. She says her name is Claire Bennet and that this was her 6th attempt.
In Las Vegas, Nevada, after doing some webcam work in her garage, Niki Sanders prepares for the day with her young son, Micah, but is forced to leave early when thugs break into their home.

Peter gets out of a cab and enters his brother's campaign headquarters. He talks to his brother and tells him about the dreams he's having. His brother's very busy and tries to dismiss his dreams. Peter tells Nathan he believes he can fly. Nathan tries to get Peter to stop talking about it and doesn't want any mention of this to affect his lead in the polls. Nathan gets a call and finds that their mother has been arrested for shoplifting.
In Odessa, Texas, Claire Bennet's story opens up with her getting her school classmate to videotape her climbing up to an 80-foot height and jumping off. Shockingly, Claire then gets up and re-locates her dislocated right shoulder as if it was nothing. More disturbing, she also refers to this instance as "attempt number six."

Zach and Claire are walking back. Claire expresses her depression which Zach can't understand. Claire doesn't want anyone to find out, but won't explain why she wanted the video taken of her. She's afraid she's not going to be able to live a normal life. Zach notices something sticking out of her side which turn out to be several ribs. She pushes them back inside her body and the would heals instantly. Zach gives Claire the tape and Claire thanks him for helping her and offers to talk to people in front of him at school the next day.
Back in New York, Peter keeps "having these amazing dreams" when he closes his eyes, specifically dreaming he can fly. Turning to his brother Nathan, who had just gotten off a call with one "Mister Linderman," Peter talks about his dreams. However, Nathan is a politican running for Congress and is extremely busy. Although he does listen, he disregards Peter's claims that he can fly and wonders why Peter would come to him, anyway. Their conversation is then interrupted when Nathan gets news that their mother has been arrested for shoplifting.

Next there's a Japanese office worker named Hiro Nakamura staring at the clock on his desk. He stares at the clock several times concentrating on it. Eventually the second hand moves one second backwards. He jumps up and shouts "Yatta!" and runs past other cubicles to his friend Ando's desk claiming he was able to break the space/time continuum. Ando doesn't believe him and isn't impressed. Hiro tells him that must be why the train was 14 seconds late that morning, which Ando doesn't believe. Hiro goes on talking about his powers, but Ando just teases him. We turn back to Ando's screen and see that he's watching the video of Nikki's strip tease from before.
In Texas, Claire confesses her despair. While her classmate believes "this is the single coolest thing to happen to their town" in many years, she disagrees and swears him to secrecy. Though he says she'll still be popular, she claims she's a freak. After describing some of the gruesome ways she's attempted to injure herself as proof, she then asks for the tape and takes it from him, promising to talk to him in school as a reward for helping her.

Niki is talking to a private school principal trying to convince him to let Micah stay in the school. The principal refuses to let him stay. Niki says that she gave a $25,000 donation to get him into the school on top of the tuition, however the previous 3 tuition checks bounced. She demands her money back, but the principal refuses. She grabs him by the tie, but he still claims he cannot return the money. As she and Micah are leaving the school she passes a fish tank and sees her reflection nodding at her. She tells the reflection to leave her alone.
In Toyko, Japan, with intense concentration, Hiro Nakamura discovers he has the ability to manipulate time. Examples include supposedly causing the subway train to be 14 seconds late and causing his clock to tick back one second. Elated, he runs to tell his coworker, Ando Masahashi, who has a hard time believing Hiro and is more interested in watching Niki Sander's webcam.

Peter and Nathan meet their mom at the police station where they find out the prosecutors have dropped the charges and that it's no big deal. Nathan berates her for getting arrested when he's trying to get elected to Congress. He blames her behavior on her husband having died 6 months ago and tells her to get over it. Peter manages to convince Nathan to leave and then tends to his mother. His mother says Nathan is like his dad, unlike Peter.
Back in Las Vegas, after Niki visits her son's private school and is given bad news about her son's tuition, she leaves and sees her reflection with an expression different to the one she has. Haunted by what she sees, she yells at the image to leave her alone, much to the confusion of her son.

Micah and Niki visit her friend's house to lay low for a few hours. Micah asks her why she reacted to the fish tank like she did, but she doesn't answer. She tells her friend that she loaned $30,000 from Mister Linderman, but she's late repaying the loan. Niki explains how she thinks someone is following her, someone she can't see.
At the police station, Peter and Nathan talk with their mother. Recently widowed by their father's death, she has been doing odd things such as this for several months. Nathan, more concerned with his campaign than his mother, tells her to "get over it". Peter attempts to be understanding and to talks with his mother while Nathan eventually leaves. As they talk, Peter tells his mother about an almost metaphysical connection he feels he has with his brother, recalling a time in the past where Peter knew Nathan had been hurt before being told. His mother is unconvinced.

Claire and Zach approach a fiery train wreck. Claire asks Zach to turn on the camera and runs inside. She find a man pinned and helps him out of the wreck. He's badly burned, but when firemen check Claire, she's not injured at all. Claire runs off before they can do anything.
Taking her son to a friend's house, Niki talks with the woman about her situation. She explains that the home invaders seen earlier where sent by Mr. Linderman, who appears to be a loan shark with mafia connections (and quite possibly, the same Mr. Linderman that Nathan spoke with on the phone). Niki also tries to tell her friend about this strange "other" she hears and sees, but her friend fails to understand. Frustrated, Niki simply leaves.

Mohinder arrives at Chandra's apartment in New York City to find it in disarray. Mohinder rents out his father's apartment and tells the landlord that he's got a job driving a taxi. In his apartment is also a world map on the mall. Mohinder uses the pictures he took in India to reconstruct the layout of the pins and strings. On the floor he finds a cassette tape labeled Sylar.
Claire, on her way home, sees a devasting fire raging. With little hestitation, she decides to test her powers again by rushing in. She manages to pull a man out of the burning train and is quickly inspected by a firefighter, only to reveal that she has no burns. She runs away before she can be detained.

In the next scene there's an artist named Isaac Mendez. Simone walks into his apartment. Isaac claims he doesn't remember painting several paintings and was high on heroin when he made them. He shows Simone a painting of a bus in Israel on fire which he painted 3 weeks ago. He picks up the morning's news paper and sees a picture of a bus on fire in Israel with the same bus number. He believes something's wrong with him and tells Simone to leave. Isaac sees the trainwreck on the news and glances over at a painting he made of the same train wreck.
Now in Brooklyn, New York, Mohinder has taken a job as a taxi driver and rents his father's other old, local apartment. Although it is in disarray, much of the material is still there and Mohinder begins to reorganize it.

Back at Nathan's headquarters Peter and Nathan discuss her mother's situation. Nathan offers Peter a job working for him as a volunteer coordinator. He claims it's to help Peter, but reveals that he's actually just thinking about how it makes him look good. Nathan says he's trying to do the right thing, but Peter leaves telling him he doesn't want his pity. Peter catches a cab which turns out to be driven by Mohinder. Peter looks up and sees the solar eclipse. Peter and Mohinder start talking about philosophy and being "special." Mohinder initially patronizes Peter, but upon seeing Peter is talking about something more substantial goes into more detail and talks about how some people are "special" and have within them what it takes to reach the next evolutionary rung.
Next, we meet Isaac Mendez. Behaving erratically, he begins destroying his paintings. When his girlfriend Simone Deveraux arrives, she attempts to calm him down and reason with him. Isaac then admits to her that although he claimed to have kicked his drug addiction, he was high when he made the paintings. Although distressed, Simone realizes the paintings are "fantastic". Isaac, however, insists that they are evil. When she asks what he's talking about, he shows her a painting he made three weeks ago and that morning's paper. The images are identical, right down to details Isaac couldn't have possibly known beforehand, as the event depicted in the paper happened yesterday. Isaac then insists that something is wrong with him and that there's "only one way left". Simone assumes he mean going cold turkey and says he cannot do it alone, but Isaac, not willing to let her stay, yells at her to leave until she finally does. After Simone walks out, Isaac watches a fire— the same one Claire saved a man from— rage and looks at another one of his paintings only to see it depicts an aerial view of the situation perfectly.

Niki returns to her house to find it in disarray. Niki watches the eclipse, but soon notices the thugs are still in her house. As she tries to run away, one of them grabs her and takes her to the garage. She's told that she now owes Mister Linderman $50,000 because she was late. The thugs coerce her into performing a strip tease for them. She refuses and they hit her and she blacks out.
At campaign headquarters, Nathan has just managed to sweep his mother's arrest under the rug and wishes she'd just get a hobby. Peter, on the other hand, simply sees it as a cry for attention and a sign of loneliness. Nathan then segues the conversation into offering Peter a job as a coordinator. However, Peter is turned off by Nathan's self-serving intentions and attempt to "do the right thing" by him. He declines, saying he doesn't want his brother's pity and walks out. There in the street, Peter sees Simone hailing a cab, then hails one himself. The driver just happens to be Mohinder and the two begin a conversation. Peter asks Mohinder about "being special". Although Mohinder is surprisingly slow to realize what Peter means, he eventually talks to him about genetics and evolution.

Back in Japan Hiro continues to try to convince Ando of his powers, but Ando remains skeptical. Hiro explains that as he develops he'll eventually learn to bend space as well as time and then be able to teleport himself anywhere on the planet. Ando teases him making comparisons to Star Trek.
Meanwhile, across the world, people— Peter included— look into the sky at a solar eclipse. Niki, specifically, looks through a device Micah made for just such an occasion. She then realizes the thugs are still there and attempts, but fails, to escape. The thugs then propose she perform for them on camera and then force her to do so. When she objects, an altercation ensures, though the scene cuts off just as it starts.

Hiro and Ando sit in a bar where Hiro explains his theory of how time works to Ando. When Ando asks how Hiro knows this, he explains that it was in "X-men #143 when Kitty Pryde time travels". Ando asks what use Hiro's powers are and suggests he teleport into the women's bathroom. Ando leaves to grab some more beer and Hiro looks at the women's room and starts concentrating.
Back in Japan, Hiro and Ando have left work. Hiro is still going on about his powers and Ando humors a bit, allowing him to explain further. Hiro claims he'll soon be able to teleport by bending the "space", in the space/time continuum. Ando could care less and suggests going to get a drink. At a bar, Hiro offers detailed theories on how he'll do what he says, referencing a comic book (specifically, Uncanny X-Men #143, from the "Days of Future Past" storyline). Ando suggests Hiro teleport into the ladies' room, thinking his friend could learn more there. Hiro, feeling up to the challenge, insists he'll do it. As Ando leaves the table to get another drink, Hiro stays intently at the room and poses humorously in concentration.

Niki awakens to an answering machine message from Micah asking to be picked up. As she looks around the room she finds the thugs have been murdered. Noticing the video camera they had set up to record her, she grabs it. Upon looking in the mirror she sees her mirror image motion for her to be silent.
Some time after we last saw her, Niki awakens to find the garage destroyed, with the dead, bloody bodies of the thugs strewn about. Even more shocking, Niki looks into the mirror to see her reflection covered in blood—-even though she isn't-—and giving a hushing gesture.

In the cab, Peter gets a call from Simone telling him to hurry over to her father's place. Less than a minute after Peter leaves, Mohinder gets another fare. This other man seems ordinary enough at first, talking about himself and heading home after business. However, he begins to ask Mohinder personal questions, referencing his teaching position in India among other things. Getting spooked, Mohinder abandons the cab and runs away. The mysterious man then gets out and is revealed to be the same man who was at Mohinder's father's apartment in India.
Peter, still in Mohinder's cab, gets a call from Simone asking him to meet her at her dad's place. He pays Mohinder and hops out of the cab. A man gets into the cab asking to go to JFK airport. The man starts talking to Suresh and mentiones that he knew a Professor Suresh teaching genetics in India and says he doesn't think he's teaching anymore. Mohinder gets spooked, stops the cab, and runs away. The man gets out of the car and it's revealed he's the same man that was earlier searching Chandra's apartment in India.

Back in Claire's home, over dinner, she confides to her mother that she "walked through fire without getting burned." However, her mother believes that she is being metaphorical, and thus dismisses her comments.
Back at Claire's home her mother and brother are talking over dinner. Claire comes in reveals that she "walked through fire and didn't get burned." Her mom misunderstands and thinks she's being metaphorical.

Ando turns around to see Hiro being drug out of the ladies room and then out of the bar by two men who throw him out onto the street. Hiro tells Ando that he was able to teleport into the ladies room, but Ando still doesn't believe him. Hiro complains that everyone else wants to be the same, but he wants to be different and "boldly go where no man has gone before." As Hiro walks away Ando sarcastically calls him "Super Hiro".
Back in Japan, Hiro successfully teleports into the women's bathroom, forcing him to be ejected from the bar. After a thorough chiding from Ando, Hiro indicates a need to be different from everyone else, to which Ando responds, "We are not special! We are Japanese!" After apparently failing to convince Ando, Hiro walks away, leaving his friend there.

At Charles Deveaux's place Simone is searching the apartment for morphine and asks Peter to come with her because he is a nurse and can give out shots.
In Simone's father's place, Peter attempts to explain his situation to Simone, but she repeatedly brushes him off to find morphine, not telling him who it really is for.

As Claire washes the dishes after dinner, her mother tries to plan a day together. While taking off her ring, Claire drops it into the still-running garbage disposal. She reaches in before turning it off, and mangles her hand in the process. After retrieving the ring, she hides her hand from her mother as it heals. She requests that her mother tells her who her real parents are. Her father finally arrives home -- and is revealed to be the mysterious man in Mohinder's cab.
Claire is washing the dishes while her mom tries to talk to her. Claire takes off her ring, but it falls down the garbage disposal which is still running. She reaches in to grab the ring and mangles her right hand. Hiding it from her mom she waits for it to regenerate. Her mom tells Claire she should know who she is and Claire finally asks her mom to tell her who her real parents are. Her father arrives home and it's revealed that Mr. Bennet is the man that was seen both in the back of Mohinder's cab as well as Chandra's apartment in India.

Back in Japan, a slightly-dejected Hiro rides the subway and sees a poster advertising a trip to New York. After intense concentration, the clock above him begins to speed up rapidly. He suddenly arrives in the middle of New York Times Square. Raising his arms triumphantly, he exclaims, "Hello New York!"
Hiro is standing on the train when he sees an advertisement poster suggesting visiting New York City. Above him is a digital clock reading 11:43. He closes his eyes and concentrates and the clock begins to increment slowly at first and then too quickly to read. He opens his eyes and is still on the train, but then suddenly he's in Times Square in New York City. He looks around smiling, throws his arms up, and screams, "Yatta! Hello, New York!".

At Isaac's place Peter and Simone find Isaac unconscious having overdosed. As Simone calls 911, Peter notices some of Isaac's paintings including one that appears to be him having jumped off a roof and flying. Isaac tells them "we have to stop it" as a giant painting of a nuclear explosion in New York City is revealed.
As Simone and Peter arrive at Isaac's apartment, Simone is explaining Isaac's ability to tell the future with his paintings. Simone finds Isaac lying on the ground, apparently overdosed on heroin. She frantically calls 911 while Peter discovers a painting that depicts him flying off of a building. It is also revealed that Isaac painted a large floor mural depicting the city being destroyed in a nuclear explosion. Isaac's only words are, "We have to stop it."

Later standing atop a building, Peter waits for his brother to arrive. Upon Nathan's arrival, Peter talks about his destiny, indicating his need to "be somebody." He steps off and falls from the building, but is saved at the last second... by Nathan, who is actually the one with the ability to fly. As they struggle, Nathan loses his grip and Peter falls again...
