Summary
The first part of the novel centers around a police officer investigating a series of poisonings that has killed at least seven people. The only witness is a young boy, who provides the policeman with sketches of the man and woman supposedly behind the killings.
The next scene shows the two suspects, Maya and her brother Alejandro hitchhiking in the back of a pickup truck. Alejandro says that their destination is in Brooklyn, New York. He says that his sister is sick and they found a man who can cure her. Maya is seen reading a copy of Activating Evolution by Chandra Suresh.
Throughout the novel are excerpts from chapter five of Activating Evolution, explaining that even seemingly harmful mutations can bring hidden good.
