Summary
A police officer asks his town coroner about the corpse that has been brought in, and notes that at least seven other people have done it. The officer returns to the scene to find other more information on the cause of death. He finds a young boy, whom he brings back to his office and uses to guide him draw and man and woman who the boy claims caused the deaths.
Meanwhile, Maya and her brother Alejandro are hitchhiking in the back of a pickup truck. Alejandro says that their destination is in Brooklyn, New York. He says that his sister is sick and that they have found a man there who can save her. Maya is reading chapter 5 of Chandra Suresh's book, Activating Evolution. The chapter explains that even seemingly harmful mutations can bring hidden good; and that humanity is obligated to explore and understand its own mutations in order to ensure that hidden gifts from nature are not overlooked.
