iStory information

hey, just wondering, considering you're the main person behind the updating of iStory information, why the iStory things can't go with the rest of character history? as far as i know, iStory is canon, and it would be better to have it put in the character history as opposedto in the evolutions section. if not, then shouldn't grapihc novls go in evolutions as well? Happy New Year! -- Tristan0709 talk 03:54, 1 January 2009 (EST)

  • Well, I agree with you about adding the iStory info. to the main part of the character histories, and have asked about making a separate iStory namespace like for the graphic novels, but I'm not sure if Admin has had time to consider the request. Until they get their own namespace, they should stay under the evolutions section and possibly even after it too. I would note that a point of contingency may be that though they both are part of Heroes Evolutions, the graphic novels are straightforward but the iStory is not. I mean, in the iStory, there are sometimes multiple paths you can take and still achieve the same or similar result. Also, when Heroes Evolutions came about and the graphic novels were grouped in it, the correct thing to do would likely have been to move all the graphic novel content into evolutions, but I'm not sure anyone wanted to go through that amount of work or that such as change would be desired now. If you want to discuss this further, you should do so at Talk:iStory and/or Talk:Portal:Issues.--MiamiVolts (talk) 05:11, 1 January 2009 (EST)

Webisodes order

I undid your changes to the webisode infoboxes for the order of the Recruit and Hard Knox. We are using the official order of release as posted at —MiamiVolts (talk) 10:17, 3 January 2009 (EST)
Sorry i didn't know. Thanks for changing it back -- Futurepeter ( U - T - C ) 13:33, 3 January 2009 (EST)
I also added 'nextpart' and 'lastpart' to the Webisodes sidebar and to the related webisodes so that we could also have the functionality you wanted.—MiamiVolts (talk) 16:33, 3 January 2009 (EST)
I noticed it, that's great. Thanx! -- Futurepeter ( U - T - C ) 16:35, 3 January 2009 (EST)

Next iStory

Hello, MiamiVolts. I noticed yesterday that NBC has a new iStory announced now that Friend or Foe has ended. Where is that announcement placed on the wiki?--Citizen 10:05, 8 January 2009 (EST)

  • It should probably go on Template:LatestEvolutions. The info doesn't specify when the 'Coming Soon' is.--MiamiVolts (talk) 12:19, 8 January 2009 (EST)
  • Thought I'd give you a heads-up, latest iStory "The Private" is out. Not an iStory person myself, but it sounds alright. Apparently is centered around Rachel. -- Tristan0709 talk 00:32, 14 January 2009 (EST)
    • Thanks for the heads-up!--MiamiVolts (talk) 05:29, 14 January 2009 (EST)
      • I'm planning on writing recaps for this one, and I have a question. Since we have the player's name, do we refer to Rachel as Rachel or as the player? If so, what about when writing about decisions the player makes?--Citizen 22:05, 14 January 2009 (EST)
        • Go for it! :) I guess you could say at the beginning in a blurb that the player is choosing Rachel's actions for her. Just make sure it is clear in the synopsis as to when Rachel gets to make a decision. Did you see the recent movie Click? There's a good analogy to that movie where sometimes what Rachel does will be automatic (instinct) and sometimes she will get to think and choose what to do.--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:36, 14 January 2009 (EST)
          • Just finished recap and added a blurb at the end. Check it out and tell me if I'm iStory-worthy ;-).--Citizen 23:18, 14 January 2009 (EST)
            • Not bad for a beginner. j/k ;) It's a good summary, and I just fixed some grammar, now I need to fix the format. The way I've been summarizing the iStory, I've been only including the optimal history and moving the rest to a subpage. If we want to change that, we need to go back and change all the character histories and summaries thus far (but I don't think that's necessary or a good idea). In this case, the roof is advantageous since in that case Rachel is above any gas and can shoot at any militia that comes her way.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:52, 14 January 2009 (EST)
  • Another heads-up, the iStory chapter has continued. Pretty cool, but I guess we have a few more updates to do. --Radicell 20:51, 16 January 2009 (EST)
    • I know. Haven't had time to work on it yet. Feel free to start doc-ing if you want. :)--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:37, 16 January 2009 (EST)

NextPart for GNS

Hey I just tried to implement your nextpart previouspart logic into the template and the War Buddies, Part 6 and 7 GNs...but it's not showing up. Any ideas on what I am missing? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 01/16/2009 14:28 (EST)

  • Please add your sig. Ryan said he didn't want nextpart/prevpart for the GNs so I didn't add it.--MiamiVolts (talk) 14:16, 16 January 2009 (EST)
    • How come? WarBuddies does the same discontinuity jumping as the Recruit does...and I think it is the lone GN that is disjointed like that. Shouldn't all multi-part arcs have the same consistent mode of navigation? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 01/16/2009 14:28 (EST)
      • My impression is that Ryan thinks that for the GNs it is sufficient to just note the next/prev part in the 'notes' section (where it has already been added) and not the infobox. You can read what he said exactly on his talk page.--MiamiVolts (talk) 14:36, 16 January 2009 (EST)
        • OK, I reverted them. --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 01/16/2009 14:48 (EST)
          • See our discussion here.--MiamiVolts (talk) 14:50, 16 January 2009 (EST)
            • The graphic novels are very explicitly numbered. The webisodes are not. We're using an RSS news feed as our basis for ordering them, I believe. They're listing them in the order they release them, so if two webisodes are released concurrently (as is the case with Hard Knox and The Recruit), different parts overlap one another. On the other hand, the GN infobox is already a bit lengthy as it lists so many credits--adding another line is not necessary, in my opinion. The "next part" of War Buddies (Part 7 actually takes many years before Part 6 and a little bit before the end of Part 5, so the true chronological order of War Buddies is 2, 3, 4, some of 5, 7, the rest of 5, 1, 6) is written in the notes. I'm not opposed to adding a line in the infobox, I just don't think we need it...especially considering that we've needed it only one time in three seasons, and that was during the writer's strike when the story was so disjointed and getting content to fans was like putting together a patchwork quilt. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:24, 16 January 2009 (EST)

DPL Columns

Hey, Ryan said you'd probably know how to split the DPL thing-y list of abilities on User:Tristan0709/Abilities into separate columns. Any ideas? -- Tristan0709 talk 22:40, 16 January 2009 (EST)

  • The simplest way is to use |columns=<# of columns> in the DPL. Just added it for you. The related help is here.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:07, 16 January 2009 (EST)
  • You can also create a columned table manually using mode=userformat, but then the columns will not autoupdate when more abilities are added.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:10, 16 January 2009 (EST)

Gas Station

Gee, seems like I'm here a lot. Just wanted to say thanks for cleaning up mess over at the petrol station article. -- Tristan0709 talk 05:21, 18 January 2009 (EST)

  • No problem. Thanks for getting it started!--MiamiVolts (talk) 05:27, 18 January 2009 (EST)
    • No problem. I go through phases of fixing things on the wiki and today it was red links. -- Tristan0709 talk 05:30, 18 January 2009 (EST)

Assignment tracker typo

  • I let the powers that be know about it. They're going to fix it. (Admin 19:53, 28 January 2009 (EST))
    • Cool! Thanks for the heads-up. Can you ask TPTB whether this other entry will get fixed?--MiamiVolts (talk) 20:10, 28 January 2009 (EST)
    • Well, they fixed the Syn Anders one (the image now shows "empathic manipulation" as appropriate). Did you see my comment above about asking about the other entry?--MiamiVolts (talk) 17:20, 29 January 2009 (EST)
      • I saw it, but since it's only a grammatical issue (and even then only when comparing it to other names they've come up with) I'm not planning to bug them about it. (Admin 19:47, 29 January 2009 (EST))

iStory namespace?

Hey, after making iStories content separate from Heroes Evolutions content (ie separating its characters, locations, places, etc.) have we considered making an iStory namespace such as the Episode, Graphic Novel, and Webisode namespaces? That way, each iStory character's history could go under Character History instead of under Heroes Evolutions. I hope you know what I'm talking about, what do you think? --Radicell 08:30, 29 January 2009 (EST)

  • I have suggested it before (see here), but only Admin can add namespaces and he's been quite busy. If you want, feel free to point him to the related discussion.--MiamiVolts (talk) 08:55, 29 January 2009 (EST)

hello i decided to answer u here since it would be fast, yeah most likely its reference with all the mutants (if i'm not wrong i think rachel described some weird people in there mainly that other guy who apparently was a creep) by the way its quite impossible to be Chandra cause he is dead :D (hope not being spoiling for u dude lol)--Manwithnoname 17:55, 30 January 2009 (EST)

  • Actually, Chandra was killed on September 28, 2006, and Rachel is telling the story of what happened to her during the Summer of 2006. Though it probably isn't Chandra, it could be.--MiamiVolts (talk) 17:58, 30 January 2009 (EST)
    • really? didn't know so how do you know this ?--Manwithnoname 10:56, 31 January 2009 (EST)
      • In Season 1, they are very specific on what day it is that Chandra dies in 2006 because of the time travel Hiro performs. In Six Months Ago, he travels back in time six months and as the months pass, we see the events that led to Chandra's death. In this iStory, the setting would be sometime after March 2007, and Rachel mentions the events occurred the previous summer, meaning Summer 2006.--MiamiVolts (talk) 11:20, 31 January 2009 (EST)
        • Still the timeframe is quite bad Chandra was most likely in New York during that time --Manwithnoname 13:00, 31 January 2009 (EST)
          • Perhaps, though Heroes characters have been known to get around...--MiamiVolts (talk) 16:03, 31 January 2009 (EST)

I was actually lucky, its first edit was spamming my user page, and it grew from there. Ryan's already blocked it, but I believe it'll be back. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 19:48, 9 February 2009 (EST)

      • Congrats, Miami. You totally earned it.--Citizen 21:32, 10 February 2009 (EST)
        • Welcome, Miami! The best advice I can give you is to just try some stuff out. Delete a page, restore it, and block somebody. (UlurusGirlfriend has been asking for it! Feel free to block me for practice, if you'd like.) If you need any help or have any questions, let me know. Congratulations! :) Oh, you know what? I just realized you were the administrator over at BionicWiki. This should be old hat for you... :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:35, 10 February 2009 (EST)

Yes, congrats! And Intuitive Empath, you weren't the only one. Therequiembellishere 22:30, 10 February 2009 (EST)

  • Despite Ryan's offer don't block him. When you block someone there's an automatic 24 hour block of their IP as well that I have to go into the database to clear out. :). (Admin 22:39, 10 February 2009 (EST))
    • I wasn't planning to. The help is pretty much self-explanatory. I trust that I will be able block someone when need be.--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:46, 10 February 2009 (EST)
      • Ive been pleasantly surprised by how rarely we need to block people despite our popularity, but I too am sure the need will arise eventually. :). (Admin 22:49, 10 February 2009 (EST))
        • Hopefully not too soon. It's not something I think anyone enjoys doing, just something that unfortunately needs to be done.--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:55, 10 February 2009 (EST)
  • Ooh, I just realized I don't have to patrol your edits anymore. Yippee! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:58, 10 February 2009 (EST)

      • Congrats on your newfound freedom, Ryan! Piemanmoo, I guess my suave demeanor fooled you, but I've not been an administrator at Heroes Wiki before. :)--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:11, 10 February 2009 (EST)

User Arkillion

Hey there Miami, I was wondering if you could do something about User:Arkillion. He keeps removing content from Talk:Empathic mimicry and reverting the image change on Empathic mimicry, even though it was already discussed. Intuitive Empath and I have reverted his edits loads of times, since yesterday, I think, yet he continues to do it. Do you think you could do something about this? Thanks! Sincerely, Thrashmeister [ U | T | C ] 15:28, 12 February 2009 (EST)

And to keep the image he wants, he has overwritten the file of the image chosen in the discussion with the image he wants, he's been erasing the discussion in which the new image was chosen too. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 15:30, 12 February 2009 (EST)
Really, this is getting out of hand now. I'm calling for him to be banned. This is not the first time this has happened, either. Sincerely, Thrashmeister [ U | T | C ] 15:35, 12 February 2009 (EST)
He also blanked my user page cause he doesn't know how to argue. Twice. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 15:39, 12 February 2009 (EST)
Phew. Thank you so much. And congrats on your first block. :P Sincerely, Thrashmeister [ U | T | C ] 15:44, 12 February 2009 (EST)
Thank you for pointing it out to an administrator like myself. I saw the warnings you have given him in his history and the vandalism of other user's pages. He did not stop to listen when I tried to contact him either so I have added a block.--MiamiVolts (talk) 15:48, 12 February 2009 (EST)
Get used to it, I have the feeling you'll find yourself doing that more often than you think. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 15:46, 12 February 2009 (EST)
It's not something to relish; but, yeah, in cases like this it's necessary.--MiamiVolts (talk) 15:48, 12 February 2009 (EST)
I know, I'm an admin in a wiki myself, me and the other admins block at least one person every week, but that's to be expected since anyone can edit there, they're not required to have an account, so people just go there and vandalize. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 15:53, 12 February 2009 (EST)
Can you delete the revert versions of the file? There's no need to keep the version of those files in the server. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 09:50, 13 February 2009 (EST)
It has already been uploaded over, so it should be okay I think.--MiamiVolts (talk) 10:03, 13 February 2009 (EST)
I noticed on his talk page that you recently had to block him. He thinks his hour of work is more special than mine, apparently. (Building 26 Summary) Do what you will, I really don't care, but it was rude. I'm not going to argue with a teenager. If you want to let it drop, let it drop. I'm letting it drop. I thought you should know though because of his history and your recent warnings.--Mistyjo 08:44, 17 February 2009 (EST)
Thanks for the heads-up. It looks like fellow administrator Ryan is already discussing this with him. Also, it is much appreciated that you let it drop. For future reference, issues about the synopsis are probably best addressed on the episode's talk page. No matter who writes the synopsis, portions of it can and probably will get changed and added on to. The nature of wiki means that the community as a whole controls the text: anything added to the mainspace can be altered for format, grammar, style, etc., as long as it follows certain guidelines. The question is whether Arkillion read through your summary and made sure he didn't leave anything out when redrafting it.--MiamiVolts (talk) 19:34, 17 February 2009 (EST)
Oh no, he didn't read it or redraft it. He deleted it entirely and put up his own. I did mention it on the episode's talk page the day it happened. You can see in the history what he did.--Mistyjo 18:07, 23 February 2009 (EST)

The Agent

I just thought I'd reply here that it was not a problem at all to get the page started. Truth be told, I used the exact same format as for The Private. And thanks for cleaning it up, and adding the Chapter 1 summary because by the time I finished The Agent page, it was late and I was waaaaay too tired to do all that work :D --Skullman1392 02:16, 15 February 2009 (EST)

  • You're welcome. If you're interested in helping some more with documenting the iStory content, adding all-options summaries for the rest of the "Friend or Foe" summaries (I've only done one so far) is still on my todo list. If you or someone else wants to help with that, it would be much appreciated.--MiamiVolts (talk) 19:13, 15 February 2009 (EST)

Can only admins rename pages? Because Imprinting really oughta be changed since it is lower than Thoughtography on the conventions scale --Action Figure 07:08, 15 February 2009 (EST)

  • Names can be change by normal users, but only if the consensus agrees that is true. I also prefer thoughtography over the current name, but a consensus check was performed against my advice and it shows there is currently no consensus for what a new name should be so the name should remain the same. As to "thoughtography" being a more common name than "imprinting", it has been claimed on Talk:Imprinting that "imprinting" is as-common a name as "thoughtography".--MiamiVolts (talk) 10:39, 15 February 2009 (EST)
    • The problem there is that imprinting is NOT a common name for that ability (in fact, i cant find ANY examples of it) and no sources were provided. I however provided a source which leads to others of Nensha and thoughtography. Shouldnt the article have the name higher on the conventions list until the concensus is reached? Why should it remain incorrect just because it was the first name picked when there is proof otherwise? Proof should override concensus... --Action Figure 22:30, 16 February 2009 (EST)
      • Imprinting may not be a comic book term, but that doesn't necessarily make it not a common term for what he does. As I've noted, I agree with you that thoughtography is a better term. However, if you want to get the name changed to that, you should try convincing the other people of that by discussing what you mentioned on the talk page.--MiamiVolts (talk) 19:31, 17 February 2009 (EST)
        • Heh, well I did bring all this up on the talk. Anyway, I wasnt referring to them being well used terms in comics, but in the paranormal and parapsychology fields. They are the actual "technical names" for the abilities, not just something any joe made up. :) --Action Figure 22:07, 17 February 2009 (EST)
          • I've read through your comments, and don't see it.--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:22, 17 February 2009 (EST)
    • Not very carefully ;) [1] --Action Figure 02:47, 20 February 2009 (EST)

DPL problem?

On Edgar Delgado's page the list from Template:NovelsCreated gives:

& Antonio Fabela

I have looked through and can't find any difference between Almost Famous and the others that have multiple colorists. Can you see the problem? -Lөvөl 17:38, 24 February 2009 (EST)

  • In cases like that, you need to switch to a manual listing, cause the list is too long for DPL to parse without ticking out. Admin is working on installing the next upgrade for the wiki server, which may help things.--MiamiVolts (talk) 18:06, 24 February 2009 (EST)

hello--IceGhost78 (talk) 19:38, 27 February 2009 (EST)

  • Hi IceGhost, just added your signature for you. When you leave a message on talk pages like this one, you should add a signature and timestamp after your name so people know who you are and when you left your message. You can automatically do that by clicking the java signature button (it looks like a signature) above the edit window after you enter your comment or by typing "--~~~~" after entering your comment.--MiamiVolts (talk) 20:02, 27 February 2009 (EST)

Date of the e-mail

The mail came to me the 14th but as I live in Turkey, 14th here can be 13th over there in the States. And you're right I checked the hour, the message came by 03.50 a.m, which would be 08.50 p.m. the previous day in the east coast I guess. --Janrodrigo 03:40, 14 March 2009 (EDT)

Template:Ep malfunction?

At User:SacValleyDweller/Release_and_Arc_Order#Volume_Four:_Fugitives, the template is returning a link to the template. The whole page uses the template for the links to the eps, GN's, and webisodes almost exclusively. I diagnosed that there may be too many uses of the template. Is there a fix for the template, or would I have to take some more tedious steps at my page to fix the problem? Would making each complete volume a subpage template fix the problem? --SacValleyDweller (talk) 19:59, 14 March 2009 (EDT)

  • I agree with your diagnosis. But if the information you are providing is static, you should probably get rid of the template:ep call all together if that is the most frequent and substitute those template invocations in your page one volume at a time. This wiki has a template limit that you can only call so many templates on a page. I think that's what's causing the problem, not template:ep in particular.--MiamiVolts (talk) 20:20, 14 March 2009 (EDT)
    • Bleck! OK, slog through subing titles for template calls on the last 3 volumes I reckon.--SacValleyDweller (talk) 22:49, 14 March 2009 (EDT)
      • You should be able to copy the page into an editor like Microsoft word, and replace all the "{{Ep" with "{{subst:Ep" and that should work when you paste back in the wiki. I think that will simplify your work.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:55, 14 March 2009 (EDT)
        • Didnt work, it increased the page size from the already large 35 kb to 600+ kb, I had to delete that revision to undo the changes. --SacValleyDweller (talk) 01:03, 15 March 2009 (EDT)
          • Edit: check it out --SacValleyDweller (talk) 01:05, 15 March 2009 (EDT)
            • Sorry, guess it ran out of ticks doing the substituting; didn't realize that would happen. Looks like it needs to be done manually since there's so many template calls.--MiamiVolts (talk) 03:13, 15 March 2009 (EDT)
              • You don't need to do it manually, instead of copying to Microsoft Word, copy it simply to Notepad, it works there. Word messes up everything but notepad doesn't. I personally prefer Notepad++, which is a freeware and more developed then notepad. I mean we can cut the content, paste it to Notepad (or Notepad++), modify it easily there, then paste back to the edit page & save it. That will work. --Janrodrigo 04:21, 15 March 2009 (EDT)

Just wanted to say thanks for the help with the formatting of the list for my userpage. Much appreciated ! --Ross R. Smith 12:25, 18 March 2009 (EDT)

Hey just wondering

I just had all my browser's windows closed by an ad. It popped up and I closed it and I had everything closed and lost my work. Just wondering whether you've seen it or it's just me.--Steely McBeam - (talk) 01:37, 25 March 2009 (EDT)

  • Haven't seen it (or maybe I just didn't click it?). If you can get a screenshot of it, you should send it to Admin so he can take care of it asap.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:44, 25 March 2009 (EDT)
