Mr. Zern teaches about lizards and regeneration. West tries to encourage Claire to open up, but has no luck. Later, he watches as Claire pushes the limits of her ability. Meanwhile, the Haitian meets Noah at Copy Kingdom.
Kindred
West encourages Claire to admit that she's special. When she finally breaks down, West flies her over Costa Verde to a beach. They talk about their powers, joking about the merits of the other's power. They then kiss, and Claire discovers that West has a peculiar mark on his neck.
The Kindness of Strangers
Claire tells West that they shouldn't hang out because of her parents being over-protective. When West asks if he can talk to her father, she tells him to let it go, since he's over-protective. West asks her on one date, and she accepts. Later, Claire lies to her father about going to the library to be with West. West flies Claire out to Hollywood, then brings her back to Costa Verde late at night.
Graphic Novel:The Rogue
At a frathouse in Costa Verde Derek and Rick, hoping to join a fraternity, are sent on a scavenger hunt by the pledgemaster. They stop by Costa Verde High School to obtain their first item. Claire leaves the keys in her Nissan Rogue, and Rick and Derek steal the car. They use it to drive around town, collecting items for the scavenger hunt.
The Line
Claire tries out for the cheerleading squad at her school and is turned down by Debbie. That night, Claire and West pull a prank on Debbie by presumably killing Claire and chasing her from the air. When Debbie is interviewed by a police officer, she tries to explain the story when a healthy Claire walks up, asking what's wrong. Another officer comes over, showing the bottle of alcohol to the first officer. Claire is given the spot Debbie just lost in the cheerleading squad.
Out of Time
West makes breakfast for Claire at her home. He then shows her a newspaper article about what they did to Debbie. Mr. Bennet returns home, causing West to panic and fly away, leaving Claire with her father. The two argue and Mr. Bennet declares it is no longer safe in Costa Verde, and they are going to move. Claire tells him if they do, it will be without her.
Cautionary Tales
Noah tells his family that they are moving from Costa Verde. Claire refuses and leaves the Bennet house. She later lays out a rock pattern spelling "SORRY" for West to see. The two argue, and West flies away, saying he doesn't believe her. Back at the Bennet household, Noah shows Sandra a picture of his death.
Mohinder discusses with Bob and Elle about their plan and tells them if they don't change their plans to his way, he will reveal everything to Noah.
Noah leaves the house and is picked up by West and flown into the Costa Verde sky, in an attempt to get answers. They crash to the ground, and Noah pins West down. Noah gets a call from Mohinder, and afterwards, decides he needs West's help.
At school, Claire is approched by Bob during cheerleading practice. When Bob calls her by he real last name, Bennet, she gets suspicious and runs home.
Noah arrives at the corner he and Mohinder discussed, and pulls a gun on Noah, telling him he needs Claire's blood and will do what he thinks is right.
When Claire arrives home she comes across the picture of Noah's death and warns Sandra about Bob. Bob appears with a gun pointed at Claire.
Behind Costa Verde High, Noah and Mohinder come across Elle. West flies and tackles Elle, crashing her into a car, and knocking her unconscious. Noah disarms Mohinder and points a gun at his face, but stops when West questions him, instead kicking him in the chest. Noah then arrives home to find Sandra tied up, who tells him Bob has taken Claire. West arrives, carrying Elle. Noah binds Elle in metal, casing her to shock herself, attempting to get in touch with Bob. He calls Bob, who is with Claire, telling Bob he'll meet him at the beach in two hours. Bob takes Claire's blood.
Noah, West, Elle, Bob, Mohinder and Claire show up at the beach. Claire and Elle are exchanged. West attempts to fly away with Claire, but is shot down by Elle. Elle then beings to change to shock Noah, but, he shoots her in the arm, first. Bob runs to her aid. Noah prepares to shoot Bob, but is first shot by Mohinder, right in the eye.
West flies Claire home, and Claire tells Sandra what has happened.
Truth & Consequences
Sandra points a gun at Bob, who stands in her doorway with a urn. He apologies for Noah's death, and hands Claire the urn, telling her she is free to have a normal life. Bob leaves, and talks to Elle in his car, telling her she needs to regain his trust.
Later, Claire releases her father's ashes into the sea. Sandra tells her they will be leaving soon, and Claire hugs West goodbye. She sees Elle in the distance. She runs to the car as Elle attempts to get away. Elle gives up and exits the car and confronts Claire. Claire threatens to expose her ability to the world.
Powerless
Claire searches through her father's records to find evidence to use against the Company. Sandra tries to convince Claire that revealing her abilities won't make the situation any better. West attempts to stop Claire from exposing the Company and the ability she possesses. Later, Claire is shocked to discover that her father is still alive; he convinces her to keep her ability secret.
The Second Coming
When Nathan is injured, Peter tells Claire to stay at home. Because of this, Sylar shows up to steal her ability and obtains his goal. Later, Noah leaves Meredith with Claire's family to protect them while he goes off to deal with the Level 5 Villains.
I Am Become Death
Four years into the future, Peter visits a reformed Sylar at what used to be the Bennet House in Costa Verde, attempting to mimic his ability. Unfortunately, he was followed by future versions of Claire, Daphne, and Knox, who storm the house to capture him. Knox takes Sylar's son, Noah Gray, hostage momentarily. After a brief struggle, Noah is freed and Sylar tells him to hide. Knox kicks Sylar and a table into Noah's hiding place, killing Noah. Enraged, Sylar starts to hit Knox, subconsciously activating his induced radioactivity. Seconds later, Sylar explodes in a massive nuclear blast, destroying Costa Verde and killing approximately 200,000 people. Claire and Peter escape the blast; however Daphne, who tried to outrun the radiation, was fatally burned, dying once she reached her home.
Notes
- Costa Verde, CA, does not actually exist. Additionally, this is the first fictional named city in the Heroes universe.
- In a question and answer session, Joe Pokaski and Aron Coleite said, "[Costa Verde's name] plays on [a] Joseph Campbell theme: Water. As a unifying agent that connects all cultures across the world. Costa Verde, or "The Green Coast" seemed to be a great city in that tradition."
- In his blog, Greg Beeman said that that the production staff imagines Costa Verde being very much like Palos Verdes, a beach town just south of Los Angeles.
- In I Am Become Death, the TV image depicting the nuclear blast in the city of Costa Verde actually shows a satellite picture of the Palos Verdes Peninsula in California. The fictional city may have been named after a tiny street, Via Costa Verde, in Rancho Palos Verdes.
- According to Heroes Interactive, scenes set at the beach (Kindred) were filmed in Point Dume Beach in Malibu. The commentary for Kindred elaborates that this is the same beach for the scene in Kanyakumari when Mohinder spreads his father's ashes (Seven Minutes to Midnight).
- According to an blog post by Greg Beeman, beach scenes with Sylar and Elle from The Eclipse, Part 2 and Our Father were filmed "at this weird beach in San Pedro. The beach was rocky and stinky and there were hundreds of feral cats living there."
