Daniel Linderman was |
Daniel Linderman was a founding member of the Company, who went on to become its chairman. Linderman also founded the Linderman Group, ran several casinos and was a mafia overlord. He was an evolved human with the ability to heal any living thing with physical contact. |
||
==About== |
|||
Outwardly, Linderman appeared as an eccentric and genial elderly businessman. Behind this mask he holds for others, however, Linderman is quite ruthless, cold-blooded and an expert on manipulation. Linderman was able to track down and re-connect with his old Army friend, Arthur Petrelli. Later, Linderman, Arthur and ten others, were brought together by Adam Monroe. Working together, Linderman and the group used their abilities to help mankind, until the group effectively fell apart. Linderman made his own plans to help "heal" the world, working with Angela Petrelli to put a plan into motion to destroy New York City. The plans were foiled at the last moment, however, and Linderman was killed. |

Nathan Petrelli calls Linderman from his campaign office in New York. <br /> |
|||
Linderman helps Nathan Petrelli in his run for United States congressman, even making personal phone calls and loaning money to him. Meanwhile, Niki Sanders owes Linderman two million dollars, which she cannot repay. Linderman eventually hatches a plot, sending Miss Sakamoto to Niki, telling her that the debt is off if she can seduce Nathan, who is staying at Linderman's casino, with hopes to get more money for his campaign. Niki eventually succeeds, and Linderman records the encounter, using the tape to blackmail Nathan if the need arises. |
|||
Six months prior, it is revealed that Arthur Petrelli, Nathan's father, was Linderman's lawyer. Nathan is asked by the DA to prosecute Linderman, which would look bad for Arthur. Before Nathan can do it, however, he and his wife Heidi Petrelli are hit by a black SUV, paralyzing Heidi. Nathan thinks they were hit by Linderman's thugs, and it was an attempt to get him to stop the prosecution. Shortly after, Arthur is revealed to have died, supposedly from a heart attack. In the present, Linderman's representative Aron Malsky retrieves Niki's debt from D.L. Hawkins, Niki's husband. In return, Linderman sends Malsky to release Niki from prison, after she had turned herself in for murder to protect her family. Malsky steals the money he had gotten from D.L., so Linderman hires Jessica Sanders, Niki's violent alter-ego, to kill Malsky. |
|||
Niki Sanders owes Linderman money, which she cannot repay. Linderman seems determined to collect what he is owed, first sending two thugs to Sanders' home. |
|||
After she does so, he tells her to kill Nathan, who is about to meet with Linderman, but cooperating with the FBI in order to expose him and kill him. Niki fails to kill Nathan, and so his meeting with Linderman takes place. Linderman puts on a cultured facade, promising that Nathan will win the election, and even heals Heidi's paralysis. He has Candice Wilmer kidnap Niki's son, Micah Sanders, and uses his power to win Nathan the election. Linderman's plan, as he reveals to Nathan, is to let Nathan's brother Peter explode as foretold by Isaac Mendez, wiping out half of New York City. This would eventually cause the country to unite under Nathan, through grief and fear. |
|||
===Don't Look Back=== |
|||
Niki tells Tina about the thugs, and that Mr. Linderman will track her down regardless of who is responsible for their deaths. She decides to run. |
|||
After the election, Niki and D.L. find Linderman alone in his office, wanting to find Micah and make Linderman pay for taking him. Linderman tries to bribe Niki to kill D.L., but Niki rejects the offer. Linderman pulls a gun and fires at Niki, but D.L. steps in front of her and takes the bullet. As Linderman prepares to fire at Niki again, D.L. phases his hand into the back of the man's head, killing him. |

When Bob finds what they are doing confusing, Linderman tells Angela not to waste her time explaining it to him, as he will never get it. When Kaito Nakamura introduces himself and Charles explains that Kaito has "escaped his destiny", Linderman scoffs at the idea as he does not think anybody talks like that. Niki, managing to take control, warns Nathan of everything at his hotel room. Though Niki tells Nathan to run since his betrayal is now clear, Nathan has a different idea: he will kill Linderman. |
|||
Nathan is lead to the kitchen in the lower floors of the hotel, where Linderman is cooking. Linderman discusses the concepts of happiness and meaning, stating that one can't have both in life. Nathan, having heard enough of Linderman, draws the gun given to him by Niki. Linderman, however, remains calm, telling Nathan that he knows all about Nathan's ability, along with his brother's and daughter's, and countless others, breaking down a major wall around Nathan. Linderman then guarantees Nathan that he will win the election, and later on get into the White House, by "fluke circumstances". Linderman offers him a life of meaning, and then casually returns to cooking. Nathan still contemplates shooting him, but ultimately doesn't go through with it. |

In 1968, "Austin" is on a boat with his war buddies en route to a Vietnamese base. He is a loner who likes to read books. When Loredo snatches his book away, Dallas tries (to no avail) to get Austin to open up. Suddenly, a shoot-out occurs. After the death of all his companions except Dallas, Austin uses his powers to completely heal Dallas's wound. |
|||
===Graphic Novel:War Buddies, Part 3=== |
|||
Dallas commands an uneasy Austin to use his powers to repeatedly heal a tortured soldier. Dallas and Austin finally find the sought-after Skyhawk, but the entire crew is dead. When Austin explains that he can't heal the dead, Dallas calls Austin a freak. Austin recounts his last night at home, when he unsuspectingly healed his mother and subsequently left when his mother and father grew fearful of him. |
|||
When Dallas expresses a desire to carry on the mission and kill inhabitants of a peaceful village called Au Co, Austin protests. However, he thinks of the good it might cause, and then decides to join in the destruction. |
|||
===Graphic Novel:War Buddies, Part 4=== |
|||
Austin and Dallas prepare for the invasion of Au Co. When Austin questions attacking civilians, they both witness a girl seemingly raise massive vegetables from the soil. Austin tries to note that she's like him, only to be interrupted by Dallas commenting on how the mission can end the war. After being ordered to get the explosives ready, Austin sets them up to detonate at 15:30. After the explosives detonate, Dallas and Austin proceed to take out targets. After a woman scream "Au Co" towards the girl with a special ability, he tackles Dallas to prevent him from shooting her, both coming to realize the girl is the mission, not the village. |
|||
===Graphic Novel:War Buddies, Part 5=== |
|||
Austin's effort to keep Dallas from shooting Au Co fails, and Dallas restrains Austin until she dies to keep him from healing her. At their base, each receives a medal of valor for his actions on the mission, but Austin refuses to corroborate Dallas's description of how Austin healed his wounds. Later, "Austin" meets with his former unit sergeant, "Dallas", in Central Park. Austin says he finally understands the sacrifices Dallas had to make for the greater good. Saying he believes they can do great things together, he finally introduces himself by his real name: Linderman. |

Linderman shows Nathan his art collection. Linderman claims to be a humanitarian who wants to heal the world and demonstrates his intent by healing a dying flower. When Nathan recognizes Hiro in one of the paintings, Linderman says to tell him he wants his sword back. Regarding Isaac's painting of the explosion, Linderman speaks of a time when he and other evolved humans worked together to make the world better until some of them became greedy. He learned that he couldn't heal one person at a time; he had to think big. He claims the explosion will serve as a catalyst for healing the whole world, not just individuals. Nathan says the explosion will destroy half of New York City, but Linderman says that's less than .07% of the world's population--an acceptable loss by anyone's standard. He says Nathan will be able to lead people in the aftermath. Nathan argues that he's losing the election anyway, but Linderman says he hasn't left that to chance and shows a painting of Nathan in the White House. Nathan points out that the explosion is caused by his own brother, but Linderman says that's Peter's part to play. |
|||
Linderman summons Jessica to the Corinthian Casino to ask a favor: to borrow Micah's talent. He promises he'll help Micah achieve something monumental, but Jessica refuses. He tells her the request was merely a courtesy, but Jessica tells him he's not taking her son. |
|||
At the Sanderses' home, Jessica prepares to take Micah to Linderman, but Linderman meets them at the house and introduces himself. He asks Micah if he'd like to save the world. As Micah rides off in Linderman's limo, Candice drops her Jessica illusion. |

After the election, D.L. and Jessica find Linderman alone in his office and demand to know Micah's whereabouts. After his failed attempt to bribe Jessica to kill D.L., Linderman pulls a gun and fires at Niki, but D.L. jumps in front of her and takes the bullet. After the two spend the night together there, Linderman and Linda see an injured deer laying nearby. Linderman heals the deer in front of Linda and turns to tell her about his ability, but Linda tells him she already knows as she lunges toward him. * McDowell said on his character "The man is a healer. He has obviously got a wonderful side to him. He's wonderful with children, wonderful with pets. What more can I say about him? He's the life and soul of a party. He tells a good joke. He's a delightful man and the kind of person that would be a very fine uncle to your children. But having said that, there is a side to him which is a little bit dark, he has this power thing. And he feels that, and I'm not saying that I feel that which is what he feels obviously, is that the world is in such a state that the human race is so decadent and out of - is that me? No. Anyway that, he thinks the answer to that is starting again. And it's obviously a kind of strange way of going about things but there are other people on this planet at the moment I'd say that think the same unfortunately, and they are dangerous. And Linderman, I don't know. He must have had quite an unhappy childhood I think for him to have taken it that far." |

Daniel Linderman was a founding member of the Company, who went on to become its chairman. Linderman also founded the Linderman Group, ran several casinos and was a mafia overlord. He was an evolved human with the ability to heal any living thing with physical contact.
About
Outwardly, Linderman appeared as an eccentric and genial elderly businessman.
Character History
Season One
For an episode-by-episode summary, see Daniel Linderman: Season One History.
Season Two

Bob Bishop goes in great detail about Linderman's involvement with the Company, recalling on things that he said and times that he spent with Linderman. Bob explains that Linderman was one of Adam Monroe's "disciple" and that the attack on New York was essentially Adam's idea. Bob compares Claire Bennet's blood to Linderman's healing ability. Kaito Nakamura also explains Linderman's involvement with the Company, stating that he is one of the original founders of the Company.

Memorable Quotes
"You see, I think there comes a time when a man has to ask himself whether he wants a life of happiness or a life of meaning."
"I'd like to have both."
"It can't be done. Two very different paths. I mean, to be truly happy a man must live absolutely in the present, and with no thought of what's gone before, and no thought of what lies ahead. But a life of meaning, a man is condemned to wallow in the past, and obsess about the future."
"An explosion of that magnitude would destroy half the population of New York City like that (*snap*)."
"There's six and a half billion people on the planet. That's less than point-zero-seven percent. Come on, that's an acceptable loss by anyone's count."
"I said that people needed hope, but they trust fear... This tragedy will be a catalyst for good, for change. Out of the ashes, humanity will find a common goal, a united sense of hope, couched in a united sense of fear. And it is your destiny, Nathan, to be the leader who uses this event to rally a city, a nation, a world."
"You should have taken the money."
Notes
- According to James Clark, the role of Mr. Linderman was down to two actors: Malcolm McDowell and David Bowie.
- It is unclear what role (if any) Mr. Linderman played in the death row inmate's confession to Jessica's crimes. (Distractions)
- Mr. Linderman's Vietnam War history is recorded in a partially censored file found in the Pentagon. In it, his codename is listed as "Austin".
- Mr. Linderman's exact age is unknown. However, Jason Badower says he remembers reading an email stating that Linderman was 18 years old in November 1968. This would make him about 56 years old in November 2006. It is more likely, however, that he was 18 in November 1961 (otherwise he would be 11 in 1961) making him 63 years old.
- McDowell said on his character "The man is a healer. He must have had quite an unhappy childhood I think for him to have taken it that far." [1]
- Tim Kring said, "I looked at Linderman almost as a Bond villain. The Bond movies always have someone new and interesting; Linderman was our first. He was our Dr. No."
- In chapter 5 of the Takezo Kensei: Sword Saint videos by the Yamagato Fellowship, Mr. Linderman is called "Daniel Linderman." He is also mentioned by name on corinthianlasvegas.com, and confirmed by Joe Pokaski and Aron Coleite in this CBR Q&A discussion. He was first addressed as "Daniel" in the episode Villains.
- Mr. Linderman was widely known to have the largest collection of Kensei artifacts in the world. The most guarded of these treasures was Kensei's sword, which Linderman never lent out and was visibly annoyed when Hiro stole it. He claimed to have received the sword in 1977. (Sword Saint)
