First post!

New User Creation

  • I'm getting ready to test out allowing new user registrations again. The past captchas are woefully inadequate anymore, so I'm switching to one that asks you pre-defined questions. My goal is to try to make the questions easy enough for people to answer without providing the answer itself in the question. e.g. "Which of these is a primary color: red yellow blue" (as an example of an undesirable question). If you have any suggestions for questions that pretty much anyone with a very basic knowledge of Heroes would probably know, feel free to reply here. Just to be on the safe side don't supply any answers to those questions. Besides if it's not something I (or most people) couldn't answer off the top of my head then it's not really an ideal question to have new users answer upon account creation. (Admin (talk) 01:03, 8 April 2015 (EDT))
    • Spelling would be an issue. I could see somebody writing "Clair" when they mean "Claire". Hmm. I'd also be concerned about keeping out new people who have never seen Heroes, but want to join because they are excited about Heroes Revolutions. That said, here are some basic questions:
    • What is it called when the moon blocks out the sun?
    • "Save the cheerleader, save the _________" <-- This is my favorite!
    • What does Mr. Bennet wear on his face?
    • Which character was a cheerleader who could heal herself?
    • What country is Hiro from?
    • What relationship do Nathan and Peter Petrelli have?
    • What character frequently cut the heads off of people?
    • Nathan Petrelli didn't need planes because he knew how to do what?
    • What network airs Heroes?
    • What is Mohinder's last name?
    • Before he died, Isaac had prophetic visions. What was his profession?
    • What kind of organization was Sullivan Bros.?
    • What was the last name of the NYPD cop who could hear people's thoughts?
    • How are those? -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 01:10, 8 April 2015 (EDT)
      • That's a great start. I have some of those already just worded slightly. You know for a moment I thought "Well, maybe not everyone knows the relationship between Peter and Nathan" then it occurred to me, "Since I'm using this for account creation if someone hasn't gotten even THAT far into the series yet it would be best for them not to edit pages yet." heh. (Admin (talk) 01:17, 8 April 2015 (EDT))
        • Yeah, good point. I'm forgetting that Heroes Wiki can be used as a fan site without an account. Accounts are for editors that know the show, or at least basic info about the show. (Plus, anybody who wants create an account that badly can do a very simple search and find the answer within a click or two.) The questions encourage knowledgeable editors, and discourages spammers. I'm adding some more above... -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 01:26, 8 April 2015 (EDT)
          • So I've had user registrations turned on most of this evening and from the logs I suspect a lot of spammers are trying to create accounts. So far it's doing a great job and none are getting through. It won't stop spammers that manually create accounts, but that's a smaller concern than all the bots. I'm going to turn it off again tonight as I'll be out of town for a few days, but when I return I'll put it back on (tentatively) for good and send out a Facebook announcement. (Admin (talk) 22:55, 8 April 2015 (EDT))

New gig

  • That's great about your new job there. What basically do they have you doing? As you probably know Joe is no longer with NBC, but I have new handlers there that I coordinate with now. :) They've expressed interest in working with us so we'll see how that goes especially as things gear up for the new season. (Admin (talk) 01:30, 8 April 2015 (EDT))
    • Thanks. Can't say much about it other than I'm doing some research for Retrofit and the new webisodes. That's great to hear about NBC's interest. Let me know what needs to be done on the site to get it either more traffic or to be a good center for Heroes Reborn promotion/information. I want the site to be attractive to NBC. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 01:32, 8 April 2015 (EDT)

Parkour Leap

Just noticed you uploaded the Parkour Leap image a few minutes before I did. Sorry about that! Feel free to delete my one. -Kon (talk) 13:51, 8 July 2015 (EDT)

New MediaWiki issues

The new MediaWiki upgrade seems to have introduced a few issues with templates and conditionals, such as appearances templates no longer correctly forming the right subheading, the template:connect being messed up on Character connections, and ArchiveLinks no longer working properly on pages like Talk:Shattering. I'm not sure on what exactly the new syntax is to fix them, but I thought I'd draw attention to all the issues I've noticed so far. --Radicell (talk) 17:18, 24 July 2015 (EDT)

  • Thanks! I've noticed a few of the same things. Not much I can personally do, other than edit the actual templates. Leave a message for Admin. That's really his department. Thanks! And welcome back! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 17:22, 24 July 2015 (EDT)
    • Hey, I noticed the fixes you're implementing with respect to the appearances templates. One thing I noticed when I tried to do this fix is that the [edit] link no longer appears on each individual episode, graphic novel, or webisode page for me. A worthy price to pay, I assume? --Radicell (talk) 14:44, 27 July 2015 (EDT)
      • I guess. It's kind of frustrating, and I'm not sure where the issue happened, but I don't see any other way to fix it. I just want it fixed, and I guess we lose the edit buttons. Oh well. But judging by how infrequently those templates are edited, I don't think it's a huge deal. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 14:52, 27 July 2015 (EDT)

Javascript being downloaded?

Have you seen any issues where from time to time here where your browser downloads or asks you to download a .js file? I'm seeing it myself and it appears to be a related to a certain ad at the top (for adult gummies), but I'm trying to figure out if others are seeing it, too. Thanks! (Admin (talk) 12:07, 28 July 2015 (EDT))

  • Nope. I haven't seen that. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 12:27, 28 July 2015 (EDT)
  • I have it happen occasionally. In fact it happened as I previewed this reply. it is f.txt from ad.doubleclick.net -Lөvөl 13:23, 28 July 2015 (EDT)
    • Thank you, Level. When you see it could you confirm that it's when the "adult gummies" ad shows at the top? (Admin (talk) 13:28, 28 July 2015 (EDT))
      • Yes it is. -Lөvөl 13:41, 28 July 2015 (EDT)
        • Thanks. I'm waiting for the ad to show up again so I can grab the image as an example. (Admin (talk) 13:43, 28 July 2015 (EDT))
          • Link to ad image, I saved it and took a screenshot as well if you need them. -Lөvөl 11:37, 29 July 2015 (EDT)
            • Thanks. I already notified them just waiting to hear back. (Admin (talk) 14:04, 29 July 2015 (EDT))

Talking about The Heroes Universe social pages on Heroes Wiki

Hi, I run social pages on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube for Imperative Entertainment. Would you be able to alert users to our social pages on the wiki? They are the official source of information about the video/mobile games, ebooks and comic books.

Stubs

I think it is highly important that we reduce the amount of stubs. So I wanna know where all of our writers are at! Lol! But I guess I can do some. But I do have a question. For the graphic novels, I stories, and webisode a that are no longer on nbc.com how do you suggest we do the summaries for a lot of the characters in these? ~~IHHTalk 14:34, 6 August 2015 (EDT)

  • I totally agree! We need to get rid of some stubs... If a section needs to be written to replace a stub, I would start with memory if it's a minor character. Feel free to look at other characters' summaries for those sections to get a clue as to what happened. Some of the webisodes can be found on YouTube and other video sites. I'm pretty sure the videos were also released with the DVDs, but I can't remember without looking at them. But yeah, that's about the best I can tell you if those things aren't available anymore. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 17:19, 6 August 2015 (EDT)
    • Ahh, I wish there were a way to view the old GNs! I do miss them... --Radicell (talk) 20:50, 6 August 2015 (EDT)
      • I did find this site with the GNs on it, well most of them! Just Google "talarino heroes graphic novels" and then that talarino site. But it does not have all of them. I was never able to view them online for some reason, so as I have been going through the episodes I've been using that site to read these GNs I never got to read. ~~IHHTalk 22:30, 6 August 2015 (EDT)
      • Almost all of the GN PDFs are on archive.org. I linked Monsters, all the others still need to be done. I think the iStories are on there as well. Unfortunately none of the videos are. -Lөvөl 00:30, 7 August 2015 (EDT)
        • Hi, as I told before, I have downloaded all of them and can upload them on the site, but for that, Admin will have to increase the maximum size limit and allow PDF files. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 01:22, 7 August 2015 (EDT)
  • On a related note, should we now go through all the graphic novel and iStory pages and remove all the dead links (i.e., a majority of the links to NBC's content pages)? --Radicell (talk) 00:33, 12 August 2015 (EDT)

Cite and periods

Hey Ryan, I had always thought that the cite goes after the period when there's only one cite for that sentence, while it goes before the period when there are other cites in the same sentence. According to your edit though it seems they should always go before the period unless it's at the end of a paragraph? Could you point me to a source that verbalises this clearly? Thanks! --Radicell (talk) 20:57, 20 August 2015 (EDT)

  • I don't think there's anything that specifically states how to cite what we're looking for (namely, citing several TV shows as sources of various sentences within a paragraph). If there is, I haven't been able to find it. In the meantime, I've always used this MLA parenthetical guide as my reference. Long quotes have the cite outside the period. Short quotes have the cite inside the period. That's about the most I've ever seen on the subject. I take that to mean that generally if the cite is at the end of the paragraph, it should go outside the period. But if the cite is within the paragraph, it belongs in the period. Maybe I'm reading it wrong? -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 21:19, 20 August 2015 (EDT)
    • Ah, good to have a source to go with at least! My issue with this method is that the guide advises to put the cite after the period following a "long quote" and I wouldn't really say that a paragraph is an example of that. After all it isn't as though the final cite is referring to the entire paragraph, but rather the final sentence. I'd argue that such a sentence is just another "short quote" that, rather arbitrarily, comes at the end of a paragraph -- and we should therefore have the cite in front of the period. Having said that, in either case we'd have to make many many changes all across the wiki seeing as up to now I've been doing it the way I described in my first comment. Alternatively, and perhaps in addition, we could be pioneers and come up with our own "style guide" for the exact thing we're doing here, as you pointed out doesn't really exist so far. What do you think? --Radicell (talk) 18:55, 21 August 2015 (EDT)
      • I totally agree that the cite at the end of a paragraph doesn't always go outside the period -- only when the entire paragraph is being referenced. The cite I changed was in the middle of a paragraph. I think the best place for a cite in the middle of a paragraph is inside the period... But if you want to open this up to a wider discussion with the community, that's fine. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 23:13, 21 August 2015 (EDT)

Hey dude!

It's been forever! I know the new miniseries is coming up, y'all need help?-- Bob (talk) 30 August 2015 (EDT)

  • Hey, Bobbo! What's going on, stranger! Good to hear from you... We'd love some help! It's gonna get crazy around here in a few weeks... :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 20:18, 30 August 2015 (EDT)

Shinjuku

Not sure if Saving Charlie said otherwise, but I believe Shinjuku is no more than a neighborhood in Tokyo (technically a "Special Ward" of the city). I'm therefore not sure it's accurate to say that Hiro and Ando's exchange took place "in Shinjuku, near Tokyo". I would suggest either changing the location back to Tokyo, or looking at putting the neighborhood of a place in the article name when it is known (and therefore adding a layer of specificity) -- perhaps this is what you were thinking with this. --Radicell (talk) 17:34, 5 September 2015 (EDT)

  • I'm glad you said something. I looked on a map and saw that Shinjuku and Tokyo are near each other, but I didn't do enough investigating to realize that Shinjuku is a ward of Tokyo. Saving Charlie doesn't say otherwise. Thanks for letting me know. You are right, my changes should be reverted. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 17:52, 5 September 2015 (EDT)

Memorable Quotes

Hey, I've been going through the MQ pages to make sure they all look the same and I noted that we don't have a template for those pages. Like if we were to make a new one, there isn't that gray box that inputs everything (like if I clicked "character" it would put the info box and the charatcernav template and all the headings). How do we make one of those things? ~~IHHTalk 10:52, 9 September 2015 (EDT)

  • Do we need one of those? It's rare that we need to create a new MQ page, even with a bunch of new characters being introduced in a few weeks. I would think that if we continue making MQ pages, we could just copy the format from an existing MQ page. (Personally, I really don't like the memorable quotes pages to begin with because "memorable" is so subjective...) But the way we make that page is to create a template. You can use Template:Newpage bookcharacter as an example of how to format all the includes and noincludes, if you choose to go ahead and make the template. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 11:13, 9 September 2015 (EDT)
    • I see what you are saying. I just think the next time one gets created, no one will probably look at the others. And then the same with the next and so forth and then you have them all looking different. It is like the Season Archives. It is rare, but if they all looked different, it would not be okay. ~~IHHTalk 11:33, 9 September 2015 (EDT)
      • Really? I don't think another MQ page will get created unless somebody is looking at a previous one. But that's why we have patrollers and admins, to help make sure that everything is uniform on the site. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 12:00, 9 September 2015 (EDT)

Hello, there!

Hello, RGS. It's been a while, and I don't know if you remember me, but I just wanted to stop by and say hello and happy viewing this season!--Citizen (talk) 22:21, 24 September 2015 (EDT)

  • Hey, buddy! Welcome back! Of course I remember you! :) It'll be good to see you around the wiki! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 22:22, 24 September 2015 (EDT)

Brave New Problems

Hey! So on the nav bar at the bottom of BNW (Heroes), I went to go put in the "next" episode part and I can't get the link to work to go to the Reborn one. Can you help? ~~IHHTalk 22:27, 24 September 2015 (EDT)

  • No problem. It just needed to say "(Heroes Reborn)" after it. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 22:29, 24 September 2015 (EDT)
    • Is there not a way to make it not say "(heroes Reborn)" though? Also, I am having problems with the Heroes Interactive links on the episodes. I moved the one for the V5 episode to HI:BNW (H), but both info boxes are still linking to the normal HI:BNW. ~~IHHTalk 01:00, 25 September 2015 (EDT)
      • Okay, let me see what I can do. It might require a small template change. It's not a big deal if it says "(Heroes Reborn)" in the navbar -- in fact, it might be good ... but I'll see what I can do. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 07:50, 25 September 2015 (EDT)
        • Okay, both issues are fixed now -- the navbar at the bottom of the episode pages link to the right pages, but don't have any parenthetical notes in them. The Heroes Interactive links are working right now. I had to delete "Heroes Interactive:Brave New World", and some of those links might need to be updated so we don't have red links. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 08:20, 25 September 2015 (EDT)

Casper/Caspar confusion

We have a small problem - when I created a page for "Casper Abraham" I accidentally misspelled his name and then nominated the page with the correct spelling that another user made afterwards, Caspar Abraham, for deletion. My page has more content and a better picture, but is spelled wrong, so could you merge the two pages? Thanks. -Kon (talk) 07:59, 25 September 2015 (EDT)

  • Sure. Also, feel free in the future to merge the pages on your own, and then let me or another admin know to delete it. Thanks, Kon! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 08:07, 25 September 2015 (EDT)
    • Okay, I think I got it now. Will you double check to make sure that it's all correct? Thanks! -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 08:29, 25 September 2015 (EDT)
