First post!

New User Creation

  • I'm getting ready to test out allowing new user registrations again. The past captchas are woefully inadequate anymore, so I'm switching to one that asks you pre-defined questions. My goal is to try to make the questions easy enough for people to answer without providing the answer itself in the question. e.g. "Which of these is a primary color: red yellow blue" (as an example of an undesirable question). If you have any suggestions for questions that pretty much anyone with a very basic knowledge of Heroes would probably know, feel free to reply here. Just to be on the safe side don't supply any answers to those questions. Besides if it's not something I (or most people) couldn't answer off the top of my head then it's not really an ideal question to have new users answer upon account creation. (Admin (talk) 01:03, 8 April 2015 (EDT))
    • Spelling would be an issue. I could see somebody writing "Clair" when they mean "Claire". Hmm. I'd also be concerned about keeping out new people who have never seen Heroes, but want to join because they are excited about Heroes Revolutions. That said, here are some basic questions:
    • What is it called when the moon blocks out the sun?
    • "Save the cheerleader, save the _________" <-- This is my favorite!
    • What does Mr. Bennet wear on his face?
    • Which character was a cheerleader who could heal herself?
    • What country is Hiro from?
    • What relationship do Nathan and Peter Petrelli have?
    • What character frequently cut the heads off of people?
    • Nathan Petrelli didn't need planes because he knew how to do what?
    • What network airs Heroes?
    • What is Mohinder's last name?
    • Before he died, Isaac had prophetic visions. What was his profession?
    • What kind of organization was Sullivan Bros.?
    • What was the last name of the NYPD cop who could hear people's thoughts?
    • How are those? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:10, 8 April 2015 (EDT)
      • That's a great start. I have some of those already just worded slightly. You know for a moment I thought "Well, maybe not everyone knows the relationship between Peter and Nathan" then it occurred to me, "Since I'm using this for account creation if someone hasn't gotten even THAT far into the series yet it would be best for them not to edit pages yet." heh. (Admin (talk) 01:17, 8 April 2015 (EDT))
        • Yeah, good point. I'm forgetting that Heroes Wiki can be used as a fan site without an account. Accounts are for editors that know the show, or at least basic info about the show. (Plus, anybody who wants create an account that badly can do a very simple search and find the answer within a click or two.) The questions encourage knowledgeable editors, and discourages spammers. I'm adding some more above... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:26, 8 April 2015 (EDT)
          • So I've had user registrations turned on most of this evening and from the logs I suspect a lot of spammers are trying to create accounts. So far it's doing a great job and none are getting through. It won't stop spammers that manually create accounts, but that's a smaller concern than all the bots. I'm going to turn it off again tonight as I'll be out of town for a few days, but when I return I'll put it back on (tentatively) for good and send out a Facebook announcement. (Admin (talk) 22:55, 8 April 2015 (EDT))

New gig

  • That's great about your new job there. What basically do they have you doing? As you probably know Joe is no longer with NBC, but I have new handlers there that I coordinate with now. :) They've expressed interest in working with us so we'll see how that goes especially as things gear up for the new season. (Admin (talk) 01:30, 8 April 2015 (EDT))
    • Thanks. Can't say much about it other than I'm doing some research for Retrofit and the new webisodes. That's great to hear about NBC's interest. Let me know what needs to be done on the site to get it either more traffic or to be a good center for Heroes Reborn promotion/information. I want the site to be attractive to NBC. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:32, 8 April 2015 (EDT)

Parkour Leap

Just noticed you uploaded the Parkour Leap image a few minutes before I did. Sorry about that! Feel free to delete my one. -Kon (talk) 13:51, 8 July 2015 (EDT)

  • Nah, I kind of like yours better. The hand is in a better spot. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:55, 8 July 2015 (EDT)

New MediaWiki issues

The new MediaWiki upgrade seems to have introduced a few issues with templates and conditionals, such as appearances templates no longer correctly forming the right subheading, the template:connect being messed up on Character connections, and ArchiveLinks no longer working properly on pages like Talk:Shattering. I'm not sure on what exactly the new syntax is to fix them, but I thought I'd draw attention to all the issues I've noticed so far. --Radicell (talk) 17:18, 24 July 2015 (EDT)

  • Thanks! I've noticed a few of the same things. Not much I can personally do, other than edit the actual templates. Leave a message for Admin. That's really his department. Thanks! And welcome back! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:22, 24 July 2015 (EDT)
    • Hey, I noticed the fixes you're implementing with respect to the appearances templates. One thing I noticed when I tried to do this fix is that the [edit] link no longer appears on each individual episode, graphic novel, or webisode page for me. A worthy price to pay, I assume? --Radicell (talk) 14:44, 27 July 2015 (EDT)
      • I guess. It's kind of frustrating, and I'm not sure where the issue happened, but I don't see any other way to fix it. I just want it fixed, and I guess we lose the edit buttons. Oh well. But judging by how infrequently those templates are edited, I don't think it's a huge deal. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:52, 27 July 2015 (EDT)

Javascript being downloaded?

Have you seen any issues where from time to time here where your browser downloads or asks you to download a .js file? I'm seeing it myself and it appears to be a related to a certain ad at the top (for adult gummies), but I'm trying to figure out if others are seeing it, too. Thanks! (Admin (talk) 12:07, 28 July 2015 (EDT))

  • Nope. I haven't seen that. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 12:27, 28 July 2015 (EDT)
  • I have it happen occasionally. In fact it happened as I previewed this reply. it is f.txt from ad.doubleclick.net -Lөvөl 13:23, 28 July 2015 (EDT)
    • Thank you, Level. When you see it could you confirm that it's when the "adult gummies" ad shows at the top? (Admin (talk) 13:28, 28 July 2015 (EDT))
      • Yes it is. -Lөvөl 13:41, 28 July 2015 (EDT)
        • Thanks. I'm waiting for the ad to show up again so I can grab the image as an example. (Admin (talk) 13:43, 28 July 2015 (EDT))
          • Link to ad image, I saved it and took a screenshot as well if you need them. -Lөvөl 11:37, 29 July 2015 (EDT)
            • Thanks. I already notified them just waiting to hear back. (Admin (talk) 14:04, 29 July 2015 (EDT))

Talking about The Heroes Universe social pages on Heroes Wiki

Hi, I run social pages on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube for Imperative Entertainment. Would you be able to alert users to our social pages on the wiki? They are the official source of information about the video/mobile games, ebooks and comic books.

Here are links:

  • Excellent! I'll start working on an article about Imperative Entertainment, and I'll gladly include the links there. I might contact you for some more information about Imperative, then. Thanks -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:48, 3 August 2015 (EDT)

Stubs

I think it is highly important that we reduce the amount of stubs. So I wanna know where all of our writers are at! Lol! But I guess I can do some. But I do have a question. For the graphic novels, I stories, and webisode a that are no longer on nbc.com how do you suggest we do the summaries for a lot of the characters in these? ~~IHHTalk 14:34, 6 August 2015 (EDT)

  • I totally agree! We need to get rid of some stubs... If a section needs to be written to replace a stub, I would start with memory if it's a minor character. Feel free to look at other characters' summaries for those sections to get a clue as to what happened. Some of the webisodes can be found on YouTube and other video sites. I'm pretty sure the videos were also released with the DVDs, but I can't remember without looking at them. But yeah, that's about the best I can tell you if those things aren't available anymore. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:19, 6 August 2015 (EDT)
    • Ahh, I wish there were a way to view the old GNs! I do miss them... --Radicell (talk) 20:50, 6 August 2015 (EDT)
      • I did find this site with the GNs on it, well most of them! Just Google "talarino heroes graphic novels" and then that talarino site. But it does not have all of them. I was never able to view them online for some reason, so as I have been going through the episodes I've been using that site to read these GNs I never got to read. ~~IHHTalk 22:30, 6 August 2015 (EDT)
      • Almost all of the GN PDFs are on archive.org. I linked Monsters, all the others still need to be done. I think the iStories are on there as well. Unfortunately none of the videos are. -Lөvөl 00:30, 7 August 2015 (EDT)
        • Hi, as I told before, I have downloaded all of them and can upload them on the site, but for that, Admin will have to increase the maximum size limit and allow PDF files. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 01:22, 7 August 2015 (EDT)
  • On a related note, should we now go through all the graphic novel and iStory pages and remove all the dead links (i.e., a majority of the links to NBC's content pages)? --Radicell (talk) 00:33, 12 August 2015 (EDT)

Cite and periods

Hey Ryan, I had always thought that the cite goes after the period when there's only one cite for that sentence, while it goes before the period when there are other cites in the same sentence. According to your edit though it seems they should always go before the period unless it's at the end of a paragraph? Could you point me to a source that verbalises this clearly? Thanks! --Radicell (talk) 20:57, 20 August 2015 (EDT)

  • I don't think there's anything that specifically states how to cite what we're looking for (namely, citing several TV shows as sources of various sentences within a paragraph). If there is, I haven't been able to find it. In the meantime, I've always used this MLA parenthetical guide as my reference. Long quotes have the cite outside the period. Short quotes have the cite inside the period. That's about the most I've ever seen on the subject. I take that to mean that generally if the cite is at the end of the paragraph, it should go outside the period. But if the cite is within the paragraph, it belongs in the period. Maybe I'm reading it wrong? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:19, 20 August 2015 (EDT)
    • Ah, good to have a source to go with at least! My issue with this method is that the guide advises to put the cite after the period following a "long quote" and I wouldn't really say that a paragraph is an example of that. After all it isn't as though the final cite is referring to the entire paragraph, but rather the final sentence. I'd argue that such a sentence is just another "short quote" that, rather arbitrarily, comes at the end of a paragraph -- and we should therefore have the cite in front of the period. Having said that, in either case we'd have to make many many changes all across the wiki seeing as up to now I've been doing it the way I described in my first comment. Alternatively, and perhaps in addition, we could be pioneers and come up with our own "style guide" for the exact thing we're doing here, as you pointed out doesn't really exist so far. What do you think? --Radicell (talk) 18:55, 21 August 2015 (EDT)
      • I totally agree that the cite at the end of a paragraph doesn't always go outside the period -- only when the entire paragraph is being referenced. The cite I changed was in the middle of a paragraph. I think the best place for a cite in the middle of a paragraph is inside the period... But if you want to open this up to a wider discussion with the community, that's fine. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:13, 21 August 2015 (EDT)

Hey dude!

It's been forever! I know the new miniseries is coming up, y'all need help?-- Bob (talk) 30 August 2015 (EDT)

  • Hey, Bobbo! What's going on, stranger! Good to hear from you... We'd love some help! It's gonna get crazy around here in a few weeks... :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:18, 30 August 2015 (EDT)

Shinjuku

Not sure if Saving Charlie said otherwise, but I believe Shinjuku is no more than a neighborhood in Tokyo (technically a "Special Ward" of the city). I'm therefore not sure it's accurate to say that Hiro and Ando's exchange took place "in Shinjuku, near Tokyo". I would suggest either changing the location back to Tokyo, or looking at putting the neighborhood of a place in the article name when it is known (and therefore adding a layer of specificity) -- perhaps this is what you were thinking with this. --Radicell (talk) 17:34, 5 September 2015 (EDT)

  • I'm glad you said something. I looked on a map and saw that Shinjuku and Tokyo are near each other, but I didn't do enough investigating to realize that Shinjuku is a ward of Tokyo. Saving Charlie doesn't say otherwise. Thanks for letting me know. You are right, my changes should be reverted. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:52, 5 September 2015 (EDT)

Memorable Quotes

Hey, I've been going through the MQ pages to make sure they all look the same and I noted that we don't have a template for those pages. Like if we were to make a new one, there isn't that gray box that inputs everything (like if I clicked "character" it would put the info box and the charatcernav template and all the headings). How do we make one of those things? ~~IHHTalk 10:52, 9 September 2015 (EDT)

  • Do we need one of those? It's rare that we need to create a new MQ page, even with a bunch of new characters being introduced in a few weeks. I would think that if we continue making MQ pages, we could just copy the format from an existing MQ page. (Personally, I really don't like the memorable quotes pages to begin with because "memorable" is so subjective...) But the way we make that page is to create a template. You can use Template:Newpage bookcharacter as an example of how to format all the includes and noincludes, if you choose to go ahead and make the template. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 11:13, 9 September 2015 (EDT)
    • I see what you are saying. I just think the next time one gets created, no one will probably look at the others. And then the same with the next and so forth and then you have them all looking different. It is like the Season Archives. It is rare, but if they all looked different, it would not be okay. ~~IHHTalk 11:33, 9 September 2015 (EDT)
      • Really? I don't think another MQ page will get created unless somebody is looking at a previous one. But that's why we have patrollers and admins, to help make sure that everything is uniform on the site. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 12:00, 9 September 2015 (EDT)
        • I can not find the template that is like Template:newarticletextbuttons but it instead reports just the season history text button. What is that template called? ~~IHHTalk 02:27, 30 September 2015 (EDT)
          • Are you looking for a button for memorable quotes? We don't have one... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:02, 30 September 2015 (EDT)
            • No I made one, I'm just wanting to make a button. For example, when you make a new page, it gives you all of those options there. However, when you make a season history page, the only option is a season history button. Why is that and where is that page like the "newarticletextbuttons" template? ~~IHHTalk 10:06, 30 September 2015 (EDT)
              • Gotcha. Okay, I added the "button" to the MediaWiki page so it should properly show up when somebody is making a memorable quotes page. Test it out and let me know if there are any bugs. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:03, 30 September 2015 (EDT)

Hello, there!

Hello, RGS. It's been a while, and I don't know if you remember me, but I just wanted to stop by and say hello and happy viewing this season!--Citizen (talk) 22:21, 24 September 2015 (EDT)

  • Hey, buddy! Welcome back! Of course I remember you! :) It'll be good to see you around the wiki! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:22, 24 September 2015 (EDT)

Brave New Problems

Hey! So on the nav bar at the bottom of BNW (Heroes), I went to go put in the "next" episode part and I can't get the link to work to go to the Reborn one. Can you help? ~~IHHTalk 22:27, 24 September 2015 (EDT)

  • No problem. It just needed to say "(Heroes Reborn)" after it. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:29, 24 September 2015 (EDT)
    • Is there not a way to make it not say "(heroes Reborn)" though? Also, I am having problems with the Heroes Interactive links on the episodes. I moved the one for the V5 episode to HI:BNW (H), but both info boxes are still linking to the normal HI:BNW. ~~IHHTalk 01:00, 25 September 2015 (EDT)
      • Okay, let me see what I can do. It might require a small template change. It's not a big deal if it says "(Heroes Reborn)" in the navbar -- in fact, it might be good ... but I'll see what I can do. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 07:50, 25 September 2015 (EDT)
        • Okay, both issues are fixed now -- the navbar at the bottom of the episode pages link to the right pages, but don't have any parenthetical notes in them. The Heroes Interactive links are working right now. I had to delete "Heroes Interactive:Brave New World", and some of those links might need to be updated so we don't have red links. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:20, 25 September 2015 (EDT)
          • All working. Except the characternav reborn is for some reason attaching the Category Season One Minor Characters if you put "type=minor" on it. It has done this for Hachiro Otomo, Mohinder, and Goateed invisible man. ~~IHHTalk 12:41, 25 September 2015 (EDT)

Casper/Caspar confusion

We have a small problem - when I created a page for "Casper Abraham" I accidentally misspelled his name and then nominated the page with the correct spelling that another user made afterwards, Caspar Abraham, for deletion. My page has more content and a better picture, but is spelled wrong, so could you merge the two pages? Thanks. -Kon (talk) 07:59, 25 September 2015 (EDT)

  • Sure. Also, feel free in the future to merge the pages on your own, and then let me or another admin know to delete it. Thanks, Kon! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:07, 25 September 2015 (EDT)
    • Okay, I think I got it now. Will you double check to make sure that it's all correct? Thanks! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:29, 25 September 2015 (EDT)

Getting back into the swing of things....

Watched the 2 hour premier last night; I guess it's time to get back on the horse, and get involved in the wiki again. I thought the premier was very promising. One thing I am missing, is a good discussion forum that hardcore fans discuss the detailed minutia over, like 9thWonders.Com used to be before it died and was reborn as a forumless tumblr page. Ryan, Do you have any alternate forum pages you would recommend that are active and similar to what 9thWonders once was? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 09/25/2015 14:50 (EST)

  • Good to hear from you! I like the Heroes Fans Unite!!!! group on Facebook. There's also a smaller group called Refugees of the 9th. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:56, 25 September 2015 (EDT)
    • Another thing. I just found a blogsite that has already transcribed the 2 new episodes; as well as the new webisodes here: [1] They allow linking to their site, but they are copywritted as far as us siting them here directly. I remember working with you years and years ago, to setup the Transcripts categories and templates and the off-site blogsites that house them for the old shows, GNs, and webisodes; but I cannot remember the login credentials anymore here: [2]. I'm thinking perhaps, if we could just alter our existing transcription blogsites to link to the new transcriptions above, that would work for us....and prevent us from having to redo category templates, etc...and if the show really takes off, the transcripts are gonna be really popular to have. What are your thoughts on the best way to approach this? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 09/25/2015 16:10 (EST)
      • Cool, thanks for the link. I remeber doing transcripts in the past on blogspot. If the other site allows linking, do we need to put linkson the old (dead) site to point to the new site? I would rather just put links on Heroes Wiki to point to the new site. A few new templates or links on the wiki are not a big deal. I'd be more than happy to create something here to take care of it. Then we could link directly to their site rather than trying to force ourselves to be the middle man. Sound good? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:30, 25 September 2015 (EDT)

Create a page headlines

Hey, so I noticed on the little gray boxes that give templates on "character","location","event", etc, there is not "ability" one and I think that this would be very important to have. ~~IHHTalk 15:51, 28 September 2015 (EDT)

  • Okay, I'll see what I can do... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:53, 28 September 2015 (EDT)
    • Alrighty, should be good now. Let me know if you see any issues with the template or anything... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:02, 28 September 2015 (EDT)
      • This looks perfect! There are a few things that I have noticed, but I did not know what to do about: 1) since the abilities have a gallery section, should we not add the Category:Galleries to the template? 2) When I moved Heroes Reborn to Spoiler:Heroes Reborn earlier, I also switched the things that had redirected to HR, however, there were some that I felt like should be deleted. Specifically the ones that say "season three spoilers"..... 3) I have added a promo logo thing to Heroes Reborn like the other Season pages have, however I am not happy with the quality of the photo and Season Four is lacking one and for continuity sake, I did not know if you knew of any that would work on this page? ~~IHHTalk 01:44, 30 September 2015 (EDT)
          1. Adding the galleries category is a good idea. I'll take care of that now. Let's make sure that all the existing ability pages also have that category.
          2. It's okay to have old links point to that page in this case. Usually not, but a lot of other sites link to us. If another site once linked to season three spoilers, but just said something like "check out these Heroes spoilers!", and then we deleted the redirect, it would take the reader to an empty page. In the case of spoilers, it's a hassle to move all those redirects, but I think it's important to keep links live even a few years later in case somebody opens an old link. However, I'll defer to User:Admin on this one if he feels differently.
          3. I'll take a look at that page and see what I can do. It might not be until tonight, though... Thanks for all your hard work, IHH! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 09:58, 30 September 2015 (EDT)
            • Okay, I updated the image (I like the one with the aurora and the shadowy characters -- it's go so much more mood than the red one). I also added an image for Season Four. Hope that works. Let me know if you come across anything else that needs my attention. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:16, 30 September 2015 (EDT)

Recurring Characters

What is our rule for recurring? 3 or 4 appearances? ~~IHHTalk 09:52, 2 October 2015 (EDT)

  • Four. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:08, 2 October 2015 (EDT)
    • Although, now that I think of it, this is a short season, so it should probably be three. I'll start a discussion at Help talk:Characters#Reborn. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:09, 2 October 2015 (EDT)
      • So, I noticed that hardly any of the animals showed up in the portals and now I have also noticed that none of the future characters are there either. Should they not also be represented in their own seasons? ~~IHHTalk 17:00, 11 October 2015 (EDT)
        • The future characters shouldn't. They're kind of a weird mix. Since a lot of them are played by principal cast, they can be considered main characters. Since some of them appear quite often, like Future Peter, they can be considered recurring characters (especially when you start adding future plus present appearances). And since some of them only appear once or twice, they can be considered minor characters. For awhile, we used to have the future characters' histories on the same page as the present character. That got really weird when the characters started speaking to themselves, or both were appearing in the same episode (especially Hiro). So we separated the pages, but found it odd to have somebody like Claire become a minor character. So we just made a separate portal for the future characters. The one thing that kind of bugs me about that is not the characters that have present-day counterparts, but the ones that only appear in the future, like the Crane boy or Howard Lemay. I'm not opposed to adding a minor character category to those characters so they show up in minor character portals, but I don't think we should do that for characters that appear in the present and the future.

As for the animals, some are definite characters that even become recurring characters (like Mr. Muggles), but some are references or thematic elements, like the dinosaur or the cockroach. Animals are kind of a weird element, so unless they become recurring characters, we just put them in Portal:Animals. Hope that explains things a bit... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:44, 11 October 2015 (EDT)

          • Yeah, that helps. I was adding Hiro Nakamura (explosion future) to the recurring section of Season One and somehow the category for him being a minor character appeared on his page and I can't find it in the edit part. Can you help me? ~~IHHTalk 17:48, 11 October 2015 (EDT)
            • It's through template:characternav. It's not something we should change in the auto-categorization. Since there are so few future characters that are also recurring, we should just add the category manually instead of through the template. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:52, 11 October 2015 (EDT)

Where are the Heroes?

Where is everyone? Back when an episode came out for Heroes, a million people it seemed like did stuff for it. Now, I feel like five people contribute. Where did everyone go? ~~IHHTalk 00:40, 11 October 2015 (EDT)

  • Ha ha, not sure... Perhaps wikis aren't the medium to use anymore, perhaps the five contributors are doing such a great job that others don't feel like they need to do anything, perhaps there are lots of others just lurking. But we are only 3 weeks in. When Heroes originally came out in 2006, and the site started on October 10, 2006, we weren't getting very many visitors. It takes time to build. I believe in building a strong product, and people will find us. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:52, 11 October 2015 (EDT)
    • Well yeah, but why has no one really returned? There are a few whom have returned but not at all like it was... ~~IHHTalk 15:42, 11 October 2015 (EDT)
      • Not sure. *sigh* -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:43, 11 October 2015 (EDT)
        • I don't claim to speak for everyone but I think a lot of people, myself included, may simply be at a different stage in their lives than they were five years ago, leaving less time for editing, coming on to the wiki, or even keeping up with the show! Having said that, I certainly intend to stay around long after this event series has finished airing to tie up all the loose ends, and I think a silver lining of having a more streamlined group of editors is that there'll still be lots of editing to be done long into 2016! --Radicell (talk) 22:11, 13 October 2015 (EDT)
  • I updated the site statistics for this year. If you look at January 2015 you'll see the general level of wiki traffic for the years Heroes was off the air. Around February 1st you'll see the first bump due to the Heroes Reborn promo during the Super Bowl. And of course you can see the traffic around the Heroes Reborn premiere. You can compare that traffic with previous years and see our traffic right now isn't too shabby at all. Granted these are viewers, not contributors. I believe the contributors will come in time, though there are a few things in my opinion that could be depressing the numbers:
  1. High learning curve. A lot of our pages use templates and can be confusing to new editors.
  2. As Radicell said, many of our prior editors have probably moved on and some may have no interest in Heroes Reborn... or at least not from the editing side.
  3. As a 13 episode mini-series people may not be as invested in it as they were the original series. With 13 episodes it's easier to track and follow all the info than a series that may have hundreds of episodes.

-- (Admin (talk) 22:52, 13 October 2015 (EDT))

  • I'm glad you updated those stats. I'll have to pull out my old files to make those graphs again. Maybe later... Those numbers are pretty revealing. Awesome, thanks. Another point I'll make is something I heard a younger colleague of mine say today -- that he's waiting to watch the series until all the episodes are finished. He prefers to binge watch, and I suspect he's not alone... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:57, 13 October 2015 (EDT)
    • Although binge watching is fun, I feel as though I don't get as invested if I don't watch it week to week. For example, I binge watch this season and then wait one whole year to watch the next and I've completely forgotten who everyone is. Whereas if I watch it week by week, I'm having constant reminders of who everyone is. But that's just me. ~~IHHTalk 23:30, 13 October 2015 (EDT)

Sendhil

Would we go ahead and make Sendhil Ramamurthy a supporting cast member because he has either appeared or done a monologue/epilogue for at least three episodes? I realize Mohinder wouldn't be. But would Sendhil? ~~IHHTalk 04:08, 17 October 2015 (EDT)

  • Hmm, that's a great question. I would say yes, but we should probably open it up to get others' opinions. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 09:08, 17 October 2015 (EDT)

the antagonist page

mr.ryan is that ok if you can make a page and list of the antagonist in the heroes series.for example sylar, arthur petrelli and jessica sanders and erica craved. --Bioleech12 21:01, October 19, 2015‎ (EDT)

  • So a few things come to mind. First off, this might be better as a category vs a dedicated page. Secondly, a lot of characters in Heroes are "morally grey" so the distinction between a protagonist/antagonist might be a bit tricky. Third, Bioleech, you're free to create any pages you want as a subpage of your user page. So for instance you could create the article User:Bioleech12/Antagonists and you're allowed to create it pretty much however you'd like. A lot of users start there and if the pages turn out to be very helpful they sometimes get moved over and made into an article in the main namespace. (Admin (talk) 22:00, 19 October 2015 (EDT))
    • Agree. "Antagonist" tends to be a subjective word, one that causes debate. It's also one of the reasons we do not refer to any of the characters as "heroes", ironically! This would be best to start off as a subpage. Let me know if you need help starting a user subpage and I'd be glad to get you started with it. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:24, 20 October 2015 (EDT)

Saving Charlie/summary

I started a discussion on Talk:Saving Charlie/summary‎ about whether this chapter-by-chapter summaries page should be deleted as it seems to me to be summarizing in depth the for-pay book novel content (electronic, hardcover/hardbound, paperback), and whether we should have a consensus for Heroes Wiki on handling approval of chapter by chapter summaries for such for-pay book novels in general cause I'm not sure whether it is fair use.--MiamiVolts (talk) 16:49, 22 October 2015 (EDT)

  • Okay, thanks for letting me know. I'll leave my comments over there. :) Welcome back!! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:52, 22 October 2015 (EDT)
  • As a point of interest, it's my understanding that Fair Use is an exception/defense of copyright infringement itself. Which is to say that if you take a picture or appropriate the text from a copyrighted source which in the absence of Fair Use would definitely be an infringement that Fair Use still allows that usage in certain cases. So it's really just one limit of what is protected by copyright. On the other hand if something inherently does not infringe on copyright itself then Fair Use doesn't even need to come into play. Granted things are never black and white when it comes to law, however I think this is a reasonable way to look at it. (Admin (talk) 18:50, 22 October 2015 (EDT))
    • Thanks... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:29, 22 October 2015 (EDT)
      • I'm still thinking this over. Admin's explanation of "Fair Use" is not clear to me (the way I understand it is different).--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:17, 22 October 2015 (EDT)
        • Fair Use is defined within the law that defines copyright. It's basically an exception to the rules that define copyright. Simplisticly stated copyright law says you cannot copy someone else's work word for word. Fair Use, which is defined within the context of copyright law, gives a few exceptions where it IS ok to do it however. Now, if you're not copying word for word then your actions do not even fall under copyright law in the first place so you're (for the most part) fine. (Admin (talk) 00:32, 23 October 2015 (EDT))
          • Thanks for trying to explain. My understanding is copyright law also restricts derivative works, and I am thinking a summary might just be considered such a work--that's what is not clear to me.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:08, 23 October 2015 (EDT)
            • Correct, derivative works are subject to approval from the copyright holder, however I believe you need to look at the content that makes up the derivative work. If we copied a transcript of all dialogue in an episode I believe that would be a derivative work since the dialogue is part of the original work and while we are not copying the video of the episode we would be creating a different type of work that derived from the original in such a way as to copy the content itself. In the case of a summary the original content is not being copied so it's not (as far as I know) derivative. (Admin (talk) 01:21, 23 October 2015 (EDT))
              • Thanks again--that's not the way I understood derivative works, as satire/parody can be considered derivative even though it has its own text.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:19, 23 October 2015 (EDT)
                • I believe a parody is generally considered a transformative work and not a derivative work (though as always I am not a lawyer, though I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night). That's a much more subjective area, though. :) (Admin (talk) 02:42, 23 October 2015 (EDT))
                  • Congrats on the Holiday Inn Express... I think a transformative work is normally a kind of fair use derivative work, but I agree it is subjective and I am also not a lawyer.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:54, 23 October 2015 (EDT)

Luke's ability page

I apologise if i made a mess on Luke's ability page.I was only trying to change the name into heliokinesis.I found out what Luke's ability is.Please don't block me --Bioleech12 14:33, October 30, 2015

  • No worries. Mistakes happen. Communication is the key. Don't worry about it! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:23, 30 October 2015 (EDT)

H.E.L.E.

I'm not sure if you saw, but I had a similar article related to the H.E.L.E. up for renaming since Oct. 24th (User:MiamiVolts/Scorched Earth future). I'm going to change my userpage to be for the Renautas simulation (which will still need to be moved to the userspace) since it looks like you are doing the event--the event I think should go in the future events portal for now (and not accidents and disasters just yet).--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:44, 31 October 2015 (EDT)

  • Yes, you're right, it belongs in the future events. I'll move it now. Thanks! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:45, 31 October 2015 (EDT)
    • No problem; to clarify, I guess I need to request a rename for my userpage to User:MiamiVolts/H.E.L.E. similation before I can request to move it to the mainspace. I think that's how it works... been a while. :)--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:52, 31 October 2015 (EDT)
    • Sorry about the typo and long recentchanges comment. The correct move is from "User:MiamiVolts/Scorched Earth future" to "User:MiamiVolts/H.E.L.E. simulation" as is correctly indicated in the rename tag. Or if you want to move it straight to the mainspace, remove the events template, and polish the article up, that would be fine with me too.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:55, 1 November 2015 (EDT)

Hiro's New Picture

Hey RyanGibsonStewart! Sorry bout that, kind of new here but I'm in love with Heroes! Totally agree and your new picture is waaay better! Thanks man! --Jashezilla (talk) 17:07, 2 November 2015 (EST)

  • No need for sorries. :) Thanks for bringing it to my attention. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:10, 2 November 2015 (EST)

Matt Parkman and precognition

Tim Kring (User:TimKring) is who made the change, noting in the change summary: "This is basically an adjustment made due to the fact that Matt Parkman was in Africa and obtained the mutual ability of Isaac Mendez and Usutu".--MiamiVolts (talk) 18:46, 16 November 2015 (EST)

At present we don't have confirmation that User:TimKring is the man himself, so until we know for sure it'd be best just to go off what's already been established by the writers, which is that Matt's ability developed to the point where he could access the same plane of consciousness as precogs. So Matt doesn't have precognition, just a very developed form of telepathy. -Kon (talk) 18:49, 16 November 2015 (EST)
Regardless of whether the user is Tim Kring, an assistant, or someone else entirely, this is a new user so I would recommend explaining the undo on his/her user talk page.--MiamiVolts (talk) 18:59, 16 November 2015 (EST)
What Kon said. I think I sufficiently explained it in the edit summary. It's also been talked to death years ago and confirmed by staff writers. But thanks for the recommendation. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:11, 16 November 2015 (EST)
FYI I doubt it's him, so don't let the name trick you. :) (Admin (talk) 21:56, 16 November 2015 (EST))

Note on Molly Walkers Page

Hey! You put the note about Molly's actress being the only one changed and asked us to check that. The only one I can think of is Claire because I think it's pretty certain that that is not Hayden in the hospital. But we don't really have the name of the actress so I guess we can't prove that. ~~IHHTalk 13:35, 5 December 2015 (EST)

  • Similar situation I think for baby Tommy and Malina.--MiamiVolts (talk) 14:03, 5 December 2015 (EST)
    • Well, Tommy and Malina were never in Heroes... ~~IHHTalk 14:17, 5 December 2015 (EST)
      • Regarding Tommy and Malina, I was just noting that they've changed portrayers too and we're still missing their credits--you are correct that they were not in Heroes so that does not apply to the note... However, I think the note needs to be reworded slightly to "is normally portrayed by a different actor in each series"--that also allows for stunt actors. Also, "Alexa Nikolas" played a younger Angela Petrelli (then she was just Angela Shaw) in 1961 (Cristine Rose is the normal portrayer in both Heroes and Heroes Reborn).--MiamiVolts (talk) 16:07, 5 December 2015 (EST)
      • I've changed the note as I mentioned in my above comment.--MiamiVolts (talk) 16:17, 5 December 2015 (EST)
        • The Claire in the hospital is just a dummy, not an actress. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:23, 5 December 2015 (EST)
