In [[The Agent chapter summaries#Chapter 409|chapter 9 of The Agent]], a circus ringmaster is spotted by [[Anna Korolenko|Anna]] while he performs a magic act where he has people pick cards and tells them what card they picked. When he finishes his act, he leaves the front performance tent and Anna introduces herself to him. He replies with a hello and continues walking towards another tent in the back of the lot. Next, Anna tells him she wants to help him, but he replies that they are not hiring and doesn't look back at her. She continues that their friend sent her, and he wants her to tell him that the men in black are here. However, the man just looks at Anna like she is crazy and tells her he is busy. Anna replies that she knows he can read minds; and he laughs, saying that is just a trick and asks her to go back out front. She counters that he asked their friend for help, and he angrily asks her to just go away. The magician then turns and walks into a dark back tent. |

A short while later, a mermaid performer spots Anna in the back tent, and she shouts to him, calling him Doug, and informing him that there is a kid in the tent. Doug curses somewhere in the back of the tent. When Anna later shouts out to him that they have to go, and that the government is surrounding the circus, Doug steps out from the back now dressing in a T-shirt. |

Doug asks Anna what she knows about the government, and tells her that the government isn't coming for him. He adds that he believes her now, and that the government is coming for everyone else in the circus. When the "thing" Anna screamed at earlier sits up again and grabs a chair. Doug calls the thing [[Linda (The Agent)|Linda]] and tells her not to use his chair. Some time later, Doug huddles with Anna and the other circus performers in the dark. He and everyone else freeze as they spot lots of people moving around quietly outside. |
