Leona says they are friends of hers, and that she helped them out when [[Building 26]] became interested in them. The teenagers followed the bikers to Lyneboro, in search of their cousin Amber, who they think might be traveling with that group. |

In chapter 4 of The Civilian, Cole is first introduced sleeping in the yard of Rachel Mills house with his twin sister Mykah. Leona says they are friends of hers, and that she helped them out when Building 26 became interested in them. The teenagers followed the bikers to Lyneboro, in search of their cousin Amber, who they think might be traveling with that group.
Cole gives a tiny diamond to Rachel to give to Amber, telling Rachel, "She'll know who it came from". Later, Rachel finds Amber at the Campfield Memorial Park, and gives here the diamond, who she immediately recognizes as being from Cole. They then go to Mable's Diner, and the two are re-united.
