Escaping through Japan, they are surrounded by bandits, whom they escape from, only for Ryoko to abandon him out of fear. Eventually, he realises that Hiro has, once again, beaten him to the quest, and teleports out of the past, returning to the present at New Orleans, LA. |
=== Lizards === |
He meets Monica Dawson, whom helps him satisfy his hunger with free food, eventually falling asleep when Burger Bonanza is nearly robbed by a criminal. Nick decides it is too dangerous, and leaves for the airport to return to Manchester, when he accidentally arrives in Philadelphia, PA. Not willing to go back on the plane, he spends the night in a flat, when he is suddenly trapped in a nightmare, which he eventually escapes thanks to some help. |
Nick and Ryoko, the woman he saved, walk through the plains of Japan, when they are suddenly surrounded by a group of armed bandits. Nick collects their weapons and causes them to retreat. Ryoko grows weary of Nick, and runs away from him. He resumes his quest, and stumbles upon Kensei and Hiro once more, watching Kensei get attacked by the same armed bandits. |
He returns to Manchester and meets with his friends, Tom, Andy and Alex, whom all have special abilities (telepathy, phasing and telekinesis), but as they start catching up on old times, Nick accidentally time travels with Tom and Alex one year into the future in New York City, where they meet with Future Andy. Learning of a deadly virus that will wipe out most of humanity, they go back in time to stop it. |

=== Kindred === |
Winding up in the middle of a battle in the Company, they are each single-handedly knocked unconscious by a super strong woman, although they wake up the next day. Deciding to return home once more, they wind up in Searsmont, ME, and witness the murder of a woman by two men while learning of the virus's location - Primatech Paper Co.. Nick and Tom recognise the name, and they teleport immediately there, arriving at the vault, when the two men catch up with them and have a showdown with Hiro, Matt and another. Finally, they accept that others have beaten them in their journey, when they accidentally teleport in front of a familiar face - Sylar. |
Realising that Hiro has beaten him to his quest once again, Nick comes to the conclusion that he must be in the present to stop Hiro's heroism. He returns to the present, appearing in the Burger Bonanza in New Orleans, LA. He stands at the counter, and orders himself a burger from a woman. He chows down, when he is asked to pay - with no money, he is thrown out. |

Nick wakes up in the middle of the street by the woman from Burger Bonanza - she tells him that her name is Monica. Offering to help, she leads Nick to the back of the fast food restaurant, and hands him free food. Nick munches away, and thanks her for her assistance. She returns to her work, and Nick sits down at the side. |
Much later on in the day, Nick has fallen asleep, only to be woken up by a sudden argument between Monica and a man. Nick stands up, and rushes around to the entrance, only to see the man stumble out. He follows the man, and holds him up against the wall, threatening him never to return to the store. The man retreats, and Nick prepares himself to leave. |
=== Fight or Flight === |
Nick travels to the airport, and asks for a ticket to England. He receives said ticket. |
He gets off the plane, and realises that he has actually gotten off too early - he is in Philadelphia, PA. The plane flies away, and Nick thinks about buying another ticket, but finds that he has no money left. Entering the city, he finds $100 on the floor, and decides to rent an apartment for the night. |
Falling asleep, as he thinks about teleporting directly to England, he opens his eyes and sees that he is in his room. He sits at his computer, only to realise that there is no internet. His television melts, and he contemplates watching a DVD on the computer - only to see multiple copies of Signs. Realising that he is having a nightmare, he tries to work his way out of it, but remains stuck in the hallucination until the room returns to normal. He walks out, and sees a man leaving room 9. |
=== The Line === |
Nick gives up, and decides that he has to return to his home. He prepares himself, after watching two men exit the apartment - Nick recognises both as Matt Parkman and Nathan Petrelli. Nick closes his eyes, and disappears. |
Reappearing in his school within the common room, he appears stood on a table. Tom, Andy and Alex stare at him in disbelief, and Tom asks him about where he has been. Nick fails to come up with an answer, believing the date to be November 9. Alex tells him that it is now March. Nick worries, and grabs Tom, trying to get an explanation for this. Tom says that its Nick's ability. Alex reveals to Nick that they all have abilities since he last saw them - Tom has telepathy, Andy has phasing, and Alex has telekinesis. |
Nick finds this great, and shakes hands with both Tom and Alex, when they suddenly appear at Kirby Plaza. Nick watches the litter fly about, and Alex asks where they are. Tom explains that they are at Kirby Plaza, which Alex remembers from Tom's stories. Nick picks up a notice, which discusses an evacuation plan by Homeland Security. Nick wonders what has happened, and then sees the date - June 14, 2008. Nick and Tom look at each other, mutually realising that they've entered another dark future. Alex looks around, and sees a man leave a building - it's Andy. |
=== Out of Time === |
Nick asks Andy what is going on, and he tells Nick, Alex and Tom that a virus was released to the world, and consequently 93% of the world's population was killed. Andy explains that their friends (citing Raouf, Ashley, and Becky), died from the infection. Nick realises that he has to change the past, when Andy explains that he is a member of the CDC. Hazmats suddenly exit the building, and apprehend Nick, Alex and Tom. |
Inside a quarantined building, Nick manages to escape from their clutches by stopping time. He then teleports and grabs Alex and Tom, returning to the past. |
Now back in their original timeline, they realise that they are now, in fact, in a hospital. As they look around, Nick sees a man who he recognises from a few days back. Tom and Alex warn him not to strike, as Tom tries reading the man's mind, only to be forcefully shifted out. Nick, Tom and Alex continue following him, when he enters a room where Matt and a little girl are. As they ready their attack again, a woman slams them into walls, knocking the three out (although Alex tries to apprehend her). |
=== Four Months Ago... === |
Tom manages to escape from the guards after the explosion, and returns back to England as he eludes capture. Taking a plane back to his homeland, he returns to school and waits for Nick to return; but he does not. |
One month later, Tom has resumed his studies, and talks with Alex and Andy about their lives so far. Tom reveals to them that he has the ability to read minds, and presents them with evidence when he hears their thoughts. The bell rings for their next lesson, and Andy says that he has music. As he leaves, he tries opening the door - but his hand phases through. |
Another month afterwards, Alex has since discovered that he can move objects with his mind, and Tom vows to form a superhero team. Andy reminds him that they are already members of Team Annihilation, and that they should be fighting crime somewhere. Before they can, however, they decide to do their homework. |
Eventually, they do form a superhero team, and enter the local mall, where Alex manages to apprehend a potential thief. Tom uses his ability to pull information out of the thief's head, and Andy calls the police. Together, they celebrate their victory over crime. |
=== Cautionary Tales === |

Nick, Tom and Alex wake up in the hospital, where they find no-one else around. Confused, they search through the complex, entering an office as they do. They find files dedicated to a group of twelve, when they see an assignment on a table about a cheerleader called Claire Bennet. Nick remembers her to be "the cheerleader", and they prepare to leave the hospital. |
Outside, they are in Hartsdale, NY and Nick grabs both Tom and Alex, teleporting them inside a car, next to a Dominican male. Nick notices Gabriel, while Alex looks at the Dominican female. The male kicks the three out of the car, leaving them stranded in New York. |
=== Truth and Consequences === |
Nick, Alex and Tom stroll through New York, when Nick shouts that he has had enough with his constant adventuring, and he simply wants to return home. Tom tells him that he has to follow through with it in order to stop the dark future from happening. Nick reluctantly agrees, and grabs both Alex and Tom, teleporting them. |
Appearing in a house, they hear a woman refuse to tell two men what they want to know. Alex overhears the location of a virus - Primatech Paper Co. in Odessa, TX - and tells Tom and Nick, who remember that they've been there before. They conclude that the virus came from there, and the three teleport. |
Now in Primatech Paper Co., they appear in the lower levels, and search through the constant passageways, which are seemingly never-ending. |
=== Powerless === |
Nick, Tom and Alex find a vault, and they figure that something important is inside. He starts opening the vault, when alarms set off and they hear the sounds of agony from down the hallways. Without any option, Nick, Tom and Alex run around the corner and quickly hide, when the two men walk past them. While they wait, Nick hears Hiro's voice, which irritates him. Matt arrives and ends up being thrown down the corridor. Nathan walks past Nick, Tom and Alex, and confronts Peter. As this happens, Alex figures that they have got the virus sorted, and requests to return home. Nick grabs Tom and Alex, and they disappear. |
Unfortunately, the teleportation goes wrong, and they appear at the end of an alleyway, when Nick looks down the corridor and sees a familiar face - Sylar. |

Character History
Season One
For an episode-by-episode summary, see Nicholas Hayden: Season One History.
Nick Hayden discovers his ability when he opens an article about New York on Wikipedia and appears there. Finding an exploding man, a comic and the explosion leads Nick on a journey with his friend, Tom, who now believes that Nick has a special power. They travel to America.
Landing in Las Vegas, NV, they see many strange events, such as a man landing outside of a diner, when Nick finds Hiro, someone he saw in the future. Nick and Tom visit Isaac and, with his help, start searching for Kirby Plaza, helping a woman along the way. Once there, they are knocked out by Thompson and brought to Primatech Paper Co., which he and Tom manage to escape from, hiding in the Burnt Toast Diner as cover. Remaining inside, they witness Charlie's murder, and learn of a cheerleader from two men. Nick goes back in time to help.
Six months ago, Nick meets Gabriel in Gray & Sons and they become fast friends, as Nick reads Activating Evolution. Nick minds the shop while Gabriel is away, and meets Isaac again, only to leave to try and save Charlie, who has been saved by Hiro. Defeated, he returns to the present, and he and Tom return to Primatech, where they are, again, knocked out by Thompson.
Two weeks later, Nick escapes from Primatech, seeing Gabriel again, when he learns that Tom has returned to Manchester. Nick returns to New York, and gets a call from Tom, arranging a meeting with him. He then gets an apartment from Simone. Afterwards, he meets Tom at the Los Angeles International Airport and try to go to Kirby Plaza again, only for terrorists to take control of the bus. Nick thwarts them, yet they arrive in Odessa, TX, where they witness a house explode. They manage to return to New York, when they see Gabriel kill Isaac. In fear, the two travel to the future, where they meet with their future selves, only for Nick to be imprisoned. He tricks Future Tom into letting him escape, and he meets with Tom again, returning to the present.
Returning to Isaac Mendez's loft as they follow Hiro, they find Gabriel's paintings, and Nick figures that Ted is the exploding man, deciding to kill him to save the world. They arrive at Kirby Plaza, and are knocked out by Thompson. Waking up in the Kirby Plaza building, they escape using Tom's telepathy, and they wait outside at Kirby Plaza. However, they get the final issue and see Hiro stabbing Gabriel, and leave to warn him at Isaac's loft. Finding a painting of Gabriel battling another man at Kirby Plaza, they rush back there, but the explosion happens. Suddenly, the Company sends agents to arrest Nick and Tom, but Nick disappears and lands outside Kyoto, Japan in 1671 behind Kensei as an eclipse occurs.

Heroes Evolutions
Nick's case file (password: NHbszr48p) at primatechpaper.com contains a personal history about Nick:
Nick was an "ordinary" person who attended his local secondary high school until he discovered his ability to manipulate the space-time continuum, which manifested when he teleported into an alternate future where an explosion occured, wiping out New York City.
He soon visited America with his friend, Tom Millward (see C019), and saw former congressional candidate Nathan Petrelli, and met with painter Isaac Mendez (see C009). Nick was bagged and tagged by the Company, but he assaulted Thompson and escaped with Tom to another destination. His ability has, as a consequence, given him delusions of grandeur, as he has a firm belief that he can save the world. This is evident when he attempted to save Charlie Andrews (see C007).
Nick was apprehended by the Company again and monitored for two weeks until he managed to escape once again, immediately arranging a meeting with Tom. Their traces became unnoticable for a short time, until they were spotted in Odessa, Texas after the destruction of agent Noah Bennet's house. Eventually caught at Kirby Plaza, both Nick and Tom successfully eluded top agents and escaped from New York City. He is currently still a student, but his whereabouts are unknown.
When last under Company care, Nick Hayden was still at the beginning of his ability's manifestation, although he has some control over his teleportation destinations. It is recommended that close watch be kept on him at all times.
The case file also contains a psychological profile:
Nick viewed himself as an ordinary, if out-of-place, person attempting to keep up with the educational system. He was lazy, and had no motivation within his life. His sloth-like nature was remarked upon frequently, which drove him to near-insanity and caused several problems within his life. He also avoided asking questions, as he believed that asking questions made him look like he was not paying attention. He found a calmness when he reached the age of sixteen and became more sociable - it is unknown why this happened.
The manifestation of his ability made numerous changes to his life for the better - he learnt of an alternate future and vowed to save the world; he started to ask others to help him in his quest, and he dragged himself out of his slothful behaviour. His moral compass has not been affected by others' influences, and he always strives to do the right thing. The only time this is not the case is whenever he happens to meet Gabriel Gray (see C004), whom he believes to be friends with.
It's recommended to keep close tabs, especially if he manifests additional abilities or falls under the sway of someone who may pose harmful to The Company and its work.
