In 1925, New York became the most populous city in the world. The biggest event in recent times in New York was the September 11th terrorism attacks which killed 3000 people and caused the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.

It is the home of the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Station, Carnegie Hall, the United Nations building, the New York Stock Exchange, and many other centers of business and culture. Many writers and performers live in and around New York, making it a prime location in literature and film. The neighborhood of Harlem is a mecca of African-American culture. It also has the largest Jewish population outside of Israel.
