Heroes Interactive
Hey Ryan, Happy New Year. I'm not sure if you're back yet from your trip. But just in case, I'll be grabbing the interactive for tonight's show.--MiamiVolts (talk) 19:42, 4 January 2010 (EST)
- Thanks. Yeah, I saw the text message this morning, and was hoping you had gotten the transcript. I can't wait to check it out tonight when I watch last night's episodes! :) Thanks, MV. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 18:03, 5 January 2010 (EST)
- I got it, and it's already posted. You can check it out at Heroes Interactive:Upon This Rock / Let It Bleed after you watch last night's episodes. They were rather fun to watch, so hopefully you haven't been spoilered too much. :)--MiamiVolts (talk) 18:37, 5 January 2010 (EST)
- Nope, no spoilers. The only thing I knew about beforehand was that there was going to be a character named Adam Malamut. Oh, and I think Jim sent me an email a few months ago asking if Claire and Nathan had ever appeared in a photograph together. :) Thanks for doing the transcription! -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 22:21, 5 January 2010 (EST)

request a page protection
Hey ryan, hope you had a good holiday. I was just wondering if you could protect Jeremy's ability. As you are probably aware, there has been discussion over jeremy's ability's name. Some people have decided to change it without proper discussion. I've changed it back just now (though its status when you read this may have changed) so I think It may be a good idea to protect it from being moved. The same goes for linderman and ishi's ability, since th two abilities are like the two sides of a coin, if you know what I mean. Anyways, hope you had a good christmas and happy new year. --mc_hammark 19:02, 9 January 2010 (EST)
- I can agree with protecting the page, but for the opposite reason. We don't have any consensus to change it, and it had an in-show source to name it. Going with anything but Healing touch is wrong.--Riddler 19:21, 9 January 2010 (EST)
- Going with healing touch is wrong, cause that's a name given to a part of the ability, not the entire ability. Since there is so much controversy, the best option for now would be the only 100% correct name, which would be Jeremy's ability. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 19:24, 9 January 2010 (EST)
- And in that case, Freezing is also wrong and needs to be changed to "Tracy's ability". Let's not talk about this here, bring it to the talk page. I put my opinion here in support of the lock, but had to note it was for a different reason.--Riddler 19:26, 9 January 2010 (EST)
- If this means splitting the page between Freezing (as what James Walker and Sylar had) and Tracy's ability (most likely to be renamed as "water and ice manipulation" if it is), then that would be ok with me. I agree that the page should be protected against moving, but being listed as Jeremy's ability due to the controversy. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 19:29, 9 January 2010 (EST)
- The name we've been given for Jeremy's ability is "healing touch". Whether it's right or wrong, or whether it only names an attribute or not is not the question. The name was given very explicitly in a canon source (as was Tracy's ability's name). The abilities have both evolved and the users have found new aspects of their abilities. We have never received confirmation that the names of the abilities have changed, though. This applies to Matt's ability, too, and I'm sure there are others. I can't always say why writers choose the names they do, and I don't always agree with the names that the writers give us...but the important thing to remember is that our job as wiki editors is simply to archive. The name "healing touch" was explicitly given to us as the name for Jeremy's ability, so that's the name that should be at the top of the article. All attributes, limits, functions, and descriptions of the ability then belong in the body of the article. I'm not going to protect the page at this point, but I will leave a message on the page's talk page explaining the information I explained above. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 21:16, 9 January 2010 (EST)
- but that name is wrong and outdated. Noah even said that it changed, which is also cannon, is it not? And it also brings up the question as to whether linderman's ability is healing touch and the pages should be merged since that ability name is based off linderman's power, but here is not the place to discuss it. --mc_hammark 07:58, 10 January 2010 (EST)

Chuck
You may have heard/seen the NBC show Chuck, well there is a "Chuck Wiki" and I am trying to help it. Is there anyway you could help make an appearance template thing like the one(s) we have here? I don't quite understand the code and how (after you click new ep appearance) it goes directly to that and I can't get any codes for that. Can you please help? Thanks! ~~IHH—Talk 18:06, 10 January 2010 (EST)
- Sure. Be more specific--give me links either on the Chuck Wiki or Heroes Wiki (or both) to show me what you want to do. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 19:52, 10 January 2010 (EST)
- The appearance templates. And the codes.. ~~IHH—Talk 22:41, 10 January 2010 (EST)
- The appearance templates are just traditional old tables. We use template:appearancecolumn to separate the columns, but that template is just table code. We use template:appearance to format each line on the appearance templates (it's just a basic link template with a few things added in that we need at Heroes Wiki). Assuming the Chuck Wiki has all the same extensions activated, you should be able to just copy the code from the templates on Heroes Wiki and paste it into new templates on the Chuck Wiki. If you're still having trouble, let me know. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 23:06, 10 January 2010 (EST)

Naming conventions
Hey, I wasn't sure whether you were aware or not but there's a pretty intense discussion going on at the Help:Naming Conventions talk page. I was wondering whether you could make a brief statement there to ease the debate down a bit, as it seems to be going in circles. Thanks :)--PJDEP - Need further explanation? 22:16, 10 January 2010 (EST)
- I saw the discussion. I'll take a look there a little later. Right now, I'm taking a break from writing an iStory, and finding spelling mistakes is easing my soul. Sometimes when I make a comment, it riles people up rather than easing the debate, but I'll head over there soon... :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 22:18, 10 January 2010 (EST)

I only stumbled across it because my spell checker was brining it up as incorrect, very strange indeed, :P - Jenx222 | U / T / C | <inlcudeonly>08:00, 7 January 2012 (EST) 23:11, 11 January 2010 (EST)

In America it's spelled "judgment", but it Britain it's spelled "judgement". See here. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 23:18, 11 January 2010 (EST)
Mohinder Drugs!
As I am not a Wikipedia whiz, I thought I'd tell you that I think a page should be added for Mohinder's Sedative in the Drugs section. I don't know how to do it, so maybe you could propose this idea to someone more advanced in this area. Thanks! --Dan 23:15, 12 January 2010 (EST)

{{drugs}}and it goes on the bottom of the page. If ever you're not sure what the code is, just look for the code on the bottom of a similar page that has the bar you're looking for. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 00:43, 14 January 2010 (EST)

New template
Hey Ryan, I just created a new template here, is it okay? --Leckie -- Talk 15:11, 13 January 2010 (EST)
- What's the purpose of the template? Couldn't we just put the information directly on Peter's page? Why do we need to use a template for it? -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 17:56, 13 January 2010 (EST)
- I thought that since he has replicated quite a few already, and since he is bound to replicate more, it would be a good idea to have. Seeing as we have ones for ones hes mimicked and been exposed to --Leckie -- Talk 14:03, 14 January 2010 (EST)
- Ah, I see. I think it's okay just to put the information directly on Peter's page. I think the reason the other templates were created is because the information was needed for a couple of different pages. That way, only one page had to be updated, rather than several. I don't think that's the case with the abilities Peter has replicated. The content looks fantastic, but I don't think it needs to be on a separate template. You could just put the information directly on Peter's page, and then we can remove the template. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 20:41, 14 January 2010 (EST)

Photographs/main characters
Something is effy with it again, in the template which links to the section, most of them are displaying and linking to Template:NBL again, that's happening only when PhotographsmainTOC is in the page, in its own page it works ok. Media template at the bottom also became a link. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 06:43, 14 January 2010 (EST)
- Hmm, I see what you mean. I'll have to play with it to see if I can fix it. Ugh. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 07:52, 14 January 2010 (EST)
- Okay, it looks like what's happening is that there are too many templates being used on the page. Not just templates directly on the page, but all the template:nbl, template:thingnavseealso, template:media, template:epp, and even template:ep. Lots. When that happens, or when the templates become too numerous, they stop working. The best thing to do is to take all the epp templates and to switch them to direct links. So when it says
{{epp|101}}, we just need to change that to says(''[[Genesis]]''). It's a lot of work, but that's the only real way I see around the situation...unless anybody has any better ideas. (I'll put this message on the talk page so it's more public.) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 08:22, 14 January 2010 (EST)- Is there no way at all to disable this template-limitation (perhaps tampering with some MediaWiki stuff)? --Radicell 09:10, 14 January 2010 (EST)
- I've had a mess around and the problem seems to be the length of the template pages (i.e. the "ep" page). The page is so long that the photographs page is having trouble loading and searching through the template again and again. I've fixed the page now so we don't have to change every link but users just need to make sure they manually add the title as a link instead of using the template from now on. P.s the template limitation is in place because using so many templates on one page would just take so long to load that it just wouldn't be worth it. - Jenx222 | U / T / C | <inlcudeonly>08:00, 7 January 2012 (EST) 09:15, 14 January 2010 (EST)

- Radicell, I don't know. That's really a question for Admin, or maybe Miami. That's not really my area of expertise, to be honest. :(
- I added some of my thoughts to the related thread in Talk:Portal:Photographs. Radicell, I think there may be a way to increase the template limit by setting a variable in the startup file, but increasing the limit increases the amount of server time it takes to load a page so that's not really the best option. If this is becomes a problem with other pages using lots of ep or epp calls, we could probably create multi-level substitution-type templates that substitute in the value of the ep or epp call when saving the page. Then a simple replace all usage in notepad or another text editor could be used to change the ep calls to use the substitution that substitutes in the hard-code value. There's an example at Wikipedia:Help:Substitution#Includeonly. I've not had much success to get such substitution working, but I think it could be doable if we want to go that route.--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:14, 16 January 2010 (EST)
- It only affects a handful of pages. I'd rather just directly write the episode name than use template:epp, if the solution is really that simple. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 09:45, 16 January 2010 (EST)

Watchlist
Hi Ryan, how far back will the watchlist go? Because I'm going to be gone all next week, and would like to know what I missed... ~~IHH—Talk 16:36, 14 January 2010 (EST)
- If you get the changes sent to you by email you can see all the changes since you last visited the pages, and they only send one per page so your inbox doesn't get clogged up. This means it won't matter about how long the watchlist is. If that doesn't help theni'll pass you over to someone else. --mc_hammark 16:43, 14 January 2010 (EST)
- So it won't go back ten days? (It's oly going to be six or seven, but I just threw a number out there) I know my email gets a notification every time some thing gets edited. But after five days, it gets clogged up so I didn't know if the watchlist would go back that far because I am the type of nerd that will sit there for hours checking each page!! ~~IHH—Talk 19:12, 14 January 2010 (EST)
- Are you worried there is an expiration date on how long a page will be watched? If not, then I'm way off topic, lol.--Catalyst · Talk · HL 19:30, 14 January 2010 (EST)
- No, I want to look at each editted page and see the differences, like I do whenever I log in. I look at my watchlist first. ~~IHH—Talk 19:34, 14 January 2010 (EST)
- I can't get the watchlist to show more than 10 days worth of recent edits. Mc_h has a good idea though--if you set your preferences to "E-mail me when a page I'm watching is changed", then you'll have all the emails (which presumable don't get deleted from your inbox". Then, if you're going to be go more than 7 days, you can just check the emails rather than check the watchlist. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 20:46, 14 January 2010 (EST)
- No, I want to look at each editted page and see the differences, like I do whenever I log in. I look at my watchlist first. ~~IHH—Talk 19:34, 14 January 2010 (EST)
- Are you worried there is an expiration date on how long a page will be watched? If not, then I'm way off topic, lol.--Catalyst · Talk · HL 19:30, 14 January 2010 (EST)
Streamy Awards extended nominations deadline
Just thought I'd leave you a note that the public nominations for the Streamy Awards have been extended through Monday, Jan. 18th, 2010, 11:59PM PST. I updated my posting regarding it on the Community Portal talk page.--MiamiVolts (talk) 21:33, 15 January 2010 (EST)
- Cool, thanks, Miami. -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 22:47, 15 January 2010 (EST)
Hey Ryan, I've just been on to the Heroes Wiki Facebook page and noticed that it hasn't been updated or that in about 10 months. Is there any chance that it will be updated again, or is there just not enough time to do so. If you want then I'd be willing to take over it for you. Just thought I'd offer, cause there are still people who seem to come to it, ask questions and all that. Anyway, think about it. --mc_hammark 15:31, 16 January 2010 (EST)
- I've noticed that, it was last updated (I think) when Dual aired in america, which i think is like April 08! As well as Mc hammark, I'd be happy to help with it. --Leckie -- Talk 16:05, 16 January 2010 (EST)
- Yeah, I've kind of forgotten to update it. Thanks! -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 16:44, 16 January 2010 (EST)
Ability supercharging split.
There is a lot of support (mine included) for the splitting of the page to form Ability augmentation and Ando's ability. We've been waiting for more input from other users and an "admin's blessing." At the risk of having you rain on our parade, would you take a look from here down and give your two cents, please? Thanks. --SacValleyDweller (talk) 19:40, 17 January 2010 (EST)
- Will do. And I actually agree with the split. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 19:41, 17 January 2010 (EST)
heheheh, an in joke
Hey ryan, i was just looking at the Heroes Wiki:Site Statistics page, and saw that there are 5 admins, which is 0.05% of the registered users. What do you think of making some more to bring it up to .07% ? lol, i'm joking btw... --mc_hammark 07:31, 18 January 2010 (EST)
- Lol, I think there was a time when Ted was an admin that it was .07% once made me chuckle when I saw it. Can't remember when it was though :) --Leckie -- Talk 14:00, 18 January 2010 (EST)
- :) To address your joke with a serious reply, it's important that we have a lot of good, strong patrollers. There's no limit to the amount of patrollers we can have, provided that the quality of their patrolling is high. (It's probably time I promote a few more...) But an administrator's job is really just to block users, delete pages and images, and change MediaWiki pages. There's never such a huge need for blocking and deleting or editing MediaWiki pages that just a handful of people can't take care of it. So having only a few admins doesn't really mean much more work for us...it's the patrolling that is the real lifeblood of the wiki and requires so much work. We need to make sure we have strong patrollers who 1) have a good understanding of English, 2) have a good understanding of Heroes, and 3) have a good understanding of policies on Heroes Wiki. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 14:55, 18 January 2010 (EST)
- Leckie is correct, I remember I mentioned that to all current admins at that point. Someone was rather slow to notice it when I pointed it out. Ryan, Miami or Admin, it was one of these three. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 16:03, 18 January 2010 (EST)

Haiti
Hey Ryan, I just saw your change to your sig and followed the link you put in it. I watched the video of Jimmy Jean-Louis and thought I wanted to help. Thing is I live in England and I'm under 18, is there any way I can help? If you know that is. --Leckie -- Talk 15:00, 18 January 2010 (EST)
- Same for me, i'm from the Netherlands and i'm 16 years old. -- Yoshi | Talk | Contributions 15:16, 18 January 2010 (EST)
- Leckie and Yoshi, if you do not have the funds to donate, you may be able to help by volunteering with your local chapters of the Red Cross. The British chapter of the Red Cross (see here) has special programs for young people. Yoshi, the Netherlands also has a Red Cross chapter (see here); not sure about their programs, but you can probably call or e-mail them to find out. If that doesn't work for you, you can also see if there is a local chapter near you of the Salvation Army.--MiamiVolts (talk) 18:17, 18 January 2010 (EST)
- If you're on facebook and can't afford to pledge money, then join this group, the creator donates $0.05 of their own money for every member there is. --mc_hammark 18:36, 18 January 2010 (EST)
- And here and here. The only thing is that you can't garentee that they will, but just for the chance they will. --mc_hammark 18:38, 18 January 2010 (EST)
- Great links, guys. Thanks. The best thing to do is give what you can...and then encourage others to do the same. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 22:47, 18 January 2010 (EST)

Sullivan Bros twitter
hey Ryan, do you know if the sullivan bros twitter is an official nbc source. I asked them about joseph's ability and they replied saying that "In the same way some telepaths push thoughts, Joseph could push emotions." I just want to know if this would be a source for naming his ability. --mc_hammark 08:55, 19 January 2010 (EST)
- Probably not. If it's not listed here (I don't see it there), then it's probably not somebody associated with the cast and crew. But even if it is somebody associated with the cast and crew, we don't know who it is, and not all sources are the same. For instance, if it were Tim Kring or Adam Armus running the Twitter feed, then yes, it would be a valid secondary source. If it were somebody like Dusty Sorg running the feed, then no, it would not count as a source at all. If it were Andrew Connolly, then we could discuss the source...but I'm not even sure it's a cast or crew member. :( -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 10:43, 19 January 2010 (EST)
