A Spoiler-ish matter

NOTE: I have refrained from using spoilers in this message.

Hi! I'm pretty much new here but have been a follower of the site for some time. I've seen on several occasions now that the ad at the top of the page for Sprint, which is giving away a spoiler for 3x18. I myself like the odd spoiler here and there, but seeing as it's on every page (even those not with the Spoiler: prefix) I thought that kind of contradicts the spoiler policy. In the interest of those not wanting to be spoiler-ed I wondered if there's anything that could be done. I'd hate to see the site get avoided for fear of giving away spoilers!   • Thanks for the heads up. I've seen it too, but I didn't think it was anything too big to worry about. In the end, there's not much we can do change the ads--part of our deal with NBC is that an ad banner play at the top of every page. I'm pretty sure Admin watches my talk page. So...theories

I come to you with a proposition, Ryan. Let's rewind a few years ago. Lost is about to air its season three finale. A fan comes into Lostpedia and posts a synopsis for the episode in the spoiler section. Spoilers get completely eradicated from Lostpedia. Back to the here and now, the theories on Heroes Wiki get stupider by the minute. Every time someone dies on the show, there's a "____ isn't dead" theory. Things like waffles, Mr. Muggles, Barbara, Harry Fletcher, etc. are unacceptable and must be put to an end...now. I don't even recall seeing a solid or plausible theory on this site. My proposition: to put an end to this dumb-founded dipshittery we see every day on the theory pages, the theories have to go. They're just a catalyst for silliness and sometimes vandalism, things that are not to be tolerated on this wiki any longer. Think about it.--Citizen 20:47, 1 March 2009 (EST)

  • Fair warning: This is a long post. Like War and Peace long. Skip to the last paragraph if you don't want my to read my rambling stream of consciousness. :)

    One thing I never want to do is to go the route Lostpedia took and completely eliminate spoilers and theories from the entire site, just in an effort to curb such content. I quote from Lostpedia's front page (their front page!): "Spoilers are no longer permitted on the wiki. Any spoilers on the wiki regarding Seasons 5 and 6 will result in an instant and permanent ban." Wow. That would scare the bejeezus out of me as a newcomer so much that I wouldn't create an account. As a casual editor over there, I'm scared that I might accidentally post something that doesn't belong, and then get banned permanently with no individualized warning. And I'm saying that as a fairly intelligent man in my 30s. Then I think of all the younger people (and I mean teenagers and such) who might miss that warning, or might not understand, or might forget, or whatever, and boom you have people being banned left and right (more than 20 this week!). That's very much not the kind of community we're trying to build here.

    Now I know very well how stupid some (okay, most) of the theories are here and how people try to sneak spoilers in on nonspoiler pages. Part of the payment for building a community is that we expect everybody to be on different learning curves, and we spend a lot of time giving individualized instruction to spare those who might actually be trying their best. Maybe Admin has reasons of his own, but mine go right back to my teaching. There's no way I'll ever be able to teach one lesson to my class and expect every single person there to "get" it. I have to try a multitude of ways and try to reach a multitude of individuals, and it takes a buttload of effort on my part. But that's the way it's done. Teachers who try to "teach to the middle" or who expect everyone to fall in line perfectly have the lowest success rates.

    So enough mumbo jumbo about teaching. Here at the wiki, we have a lot of stupidity that creeps into pages that don't get patrolled as often as others--namely the theory pages. (Spoiler pages, too, but mostly the theory sections of those pages.) It's rare that you'll see me visit those pages. In fact, I visited one today, and I think there was only one theory there, and it wasn't a bad one. But it was riddled with grammar mistakes, so I started editing. I could have gone on much longer and taken my editing to other theory pages, but I just couldn't bring myself to do that. Ugh. I generally stay away from those pages.

    Yes, all pages at Heroes Wiki are supposed to be professional in nature. But some have gone so far to the other side that trying to bring them back to a level of professionalism seems like an insurmountable task. I know. My suggestion is either 1, stay away from those pages, or 2, work with one individual at a time to bring up the level of professionalism.

    Now all that jazz having been said, there are a bunch of yahoos and idiots who will still be jerks and put stupid stuff on some pages. I've seen about a million theories about the drug dealer and Harry Fletcher. I don't have the energy--or desire--to go through the history and find out who did it, and then to give the person a proper warning. So it continues. (If anybody knows who the db is, please give them a kind but firm warning--and if they give you trouble, let me know.)

    I know this is a superlong rant, but my point is to kind of give you the place where I'm coming from. I don't think getting rid of the theory pages altogether is a good idea, as it's a hook for a lot of people (myself included) to join the site. And just because there are a few jerks who hog the pages with inane theories doesn't mean we should cut off our nose to spite our face, so to speak. The theory pages themselves aren't innately stupid. It's the content that can be, and so it's the content that needs to be removed or modified. This should probably be discussed at the community portal, but maybe we need stricter guidelines for the theory pages (see Help:Theories). Maybe we need to dedicate one or two patrollers to just working on the theory pages. Maybe somebody has another idea... -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 21:11, 1 March 2009 (EST)

        • Wow honestly didn't realise there was such a problem. As of now I'm done with any "silly" theories and whatnot, and to try and make it up to everyone am going to go and clean up the Drug dealer's theory page and check any of the spoiler pages for drug dealer theories and the like. New Main Page ideas

I think it would be good to have links to both the latest Behind the Eclipses and Beaming Beemans on the Main Page. They are both great resources for information about the Heroes-verse and it would make it easier to know when the new ones are up. It would also make it easier than going to the links section and it would help users understand where some of the new/unexplained information is coming from (eg. how Matt has precognition, why Sylar held onto telekinesis when he lost his other absorbed abilities). --Elemental Manipulator [ U | T | C ] - When in doubt, ask BTE 04:51, 2 March 2009 (EST)

  • I concur. This is a great idea, and it would encourage newcomers to the show/wiki to read those interviews. I'd rather go to the main page for these links than to the interview page. As to where they would go, I think it's time to take away the "Did you know..." section. It hasn't been updated in such a long time.     • Yeah, I don't think adding those links on the main page is a bad idea. They're both wonderful resources, and I think publicizing them a bit more is a good idea. I'm not in favor of removing the DYK section. If it hasn't been updated in awhile, the remedy is not to remove it, but to update it. I added the links to the news section where there are other "see also" links and other external links. Not commenting on a page that should pretty much be watched by everybody and that has been bumped a sufficient number of times--well that to me implies that nobody's opposed, otherwise they would have commented.     • The pages look really good. A few notes:
      1. Each page needs an introductory line. Something like "The following memorable quotes were said by Sylar in Season One." should be fine.
      2. The names of the pages seem odd to me. Should it be "Sylar/Memorable quotes from Season One"? Or "Sylar/Season One memorable quotes"? And really, we might want to think about listing all of Sylar's most memorable quotes--regardless of season--on one page. Then we could just call the page "List of memorable quotes from Sylar" or something a little more straightforward like that.
      3. There doesn't need to be a heading on each page that says "Sylar". In fact, if we put all the quotes from one person (regardless of season) on one page, then the headings should be "Season One", "Season Two", etc.
      4. Template:MQ will need to be updated once the titles of the pages are decided.

      2. I think having them all on one page is a good idea, but some page (I'm thinking Sylar, who has amazing quotes every episode) will get excessively long. But I think this is a good idea, if we do merge them it is easy to name, just Sylar/Memorable Quotes.
      3. To bo honest, there wasn't supposed to be a heading, I was bulk coping and some of them might have got caught up, my bad.

    • Eh, we deal with them one at a time. It's the old "How do you eat an elephant?" adage. I don't think it matters too much if Sylar's quote page gets too long. We have pages that are much longer with little or no consequence. If you need help with template:MQ, let me know.   • You have to use the code subst: in the template. That substitutes everything in the template right onto the page. What you would type is {{subst:newepchecklist}}. Target Daphne

Good call on the pseudo Daphne not being Daphne...the real Daphne showed up in tonights Target gallery. I will work on updating pics and stuff tomorrow on the gallery. Whew, they completely redid the board this epi also, but they didn't give enough clear and discernable frames of it to re-do the template...I know there were around 4 or so 'new' targets added this episode also...not sure where to put them in the template. Don't think I can re-organize it yet either; not enough clear caps of the entire thing.   • Judging from last week's BTE and Nathan moving pics around this week (and moving pics from ep to ep), we probably shouldn't try to make the template look like the board. It's a board that keeps changing, and it's probably more trouble than it's worth. How about just a gallery? Or how about just keeping the images in the template nice and small as they are, but putting them in alphabetical order, with all the unknowns at the end?   • Well, you look like you've got the signature down, right? That's not too bad! Now, for linking things, all you do is add two square brackets one each side of the word you want to link. So if I want to link the word "Sylar", I will type [[Sylar]] and I get Sylar. If I want to link to Sylar's page but use different text, I separate the link from the text with a pipe, like this: [[Sylar|a serial killer]] and I get this: a serial killer. Check out this help section for more information. And if you're still having trouble, feel free to stop on over and ask me. Heroes renewed

Hey, did you hear that people from NBC said Heroes will be back for the 4th season? It's not official, but they've said they'll be back. So, we can stop worrying! :) And they've said they're thinking about how many seasons Heroes will have so we'll probably know when this series will end (as we already know when, for example, Lost and Grey's Anatomy will end). They don't want it to end with the next season cause Heroes may not be the most watched series in USA but it is in some other countries as Japan.       • Ultimately, I think we're seeing a shift in how people watch television. To be honest, there are only two shows that I ever watch live: Heroes and Lost. And even then, I'll watch them later that night with my wife if she works the late shift. But an increasingly large amount of people watch their shows in alternative ways (TiVo, DVR, Hulu, NBC.com, iTunes, DVD, etc.) It's the same with the music business--people listen to music differently than they did in the past. It takes awhile for the industry to catch up.           • Not always the first, but definitely high up there. They rank very high for shows watched online and on DVR. Entertainment Weekly publishes those kinds of statistics quite often. Sometimes there are only a handful of shows (like Lost and The Office) that beat Heroes in alternate viewership.             • I've read somewhere that, overall, Heroes has the highest number of views with those alternate ways. Yeah, it's not always the first but they say Heroes is the number 1 show with those kind of views. If only I could remember where I've found that information so I could confirm it with a link... Created pages

  • Adding a comma to the "character" field makes it say "characters". (The same goes for many of the fields in the character box, like "parent/s", "child/ren" etc.) When there's more than one character, the links must be done manually, though.         • It's an honor to be able to offer it to you! ... With IMDb pictures, they no longer allow you to right click and save the image (or at least I've never been able to figure out a way to do it). Instead, you have to take a screenshot of your computer, and then crop (and usually shrink) the image in an image editing program. Normally, I upload all the new actor images the night the episode airs. But this week has been tough for me. My graduate class ends on Friday, so I'm working on a few papers. Sunday is also a payment deadline for the camp I run, so I've got people calling with last minute questions. Assignment Tracker 2.0 Template

  • Not a stupid question at all. If you go to the usage section of the template page, you'll see a template format with all the variables listed. Copy and paste that into a new page (if you're creating a fan page, you'll want to do it under your user namespace, so the title of the new page will start with "User:Sylar Fan09/TITLE" where "TITLE" is the rest of the article's name). Then fill in all the variables. Play around with it a bit to see what changes--be sure to use the "show preview" button before saving so you can see what it looks like first. To see an example, click on pretty much any of the pages listed here (or at least the ones that say "(inclusion)"). Take a look at the code for this really good page for an example.           • No need to be sorry. For the control index, just type in a number between 0 and 100. It should look like this:
            | control = 65
            For the similar person, just type in the name of the person. It should look like this:
            | similar person = Echo DeMille

  • Just add the image's name to the correct field. For instance, add 
    | image = At C001Photo.jpg
    to get an image of Hana. You can only add images that have been uploaded to Heroes Wiki. For editing images, I suggest Gimp. It's pretty much all I use, and I find that it has everything I need. Hope that helps... -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 21:46, 11 March 2009 (EDT)

              • It was just because I like wolves growing up, and I was always taller and more hairy than other people and it just became a playful joke.                 • Yeah, I like to keep track of new images that are uploaded, and I find that putting them right on my user page helps remind me to check up on them. To edit a picture, you'll have to do that in an external program. I like Gimp. There's an option on gimp to change the levels of the colors. Simply add more blue and play around with it until it's the way you want it to look. Then reupload the image over the old one.   • "Breaking the rules" is a bit of a negative way to say it, especially since people usually don't mean to do wrong.           • Totally scared. But exhilarated, too! I taught fourth grade my first year, and then moved to third for two years after that. I love it. I still get that feeling of excitement when I wake up in the morning. There are hard days and it's a lot to juggle, but I love it, I really do. I can't imagine myself doing anything else!...My best (unsolicited) advice to you while you're still in school is to sit back and soak up as much as you can (especially about how to do planning). Then realize that once you start student teaching, that's when your "real" learning starts. I learned more in my first three days of student teaching than I did in all my college career. Then realize, too, that once you start teaching on your own, the book is totally rewritten and you'll have to start all over again.   • I don't think that section should be on the episode pages. It's never been on before, and it's a recent addition. I don't think it's ever been properly discussed--or at least I haven't ever seen a discussion about it. Ultimately, I don't think it's needed at all.     • Back in the day, there were about six or seven wikis that focused on Heroes. Most of them have become defunct (here's one that's still around). The one at Wikia is still around and is pretty current. They've taken some of our content (well, our images and our templates--see here), but I'm not too miffed by it. I've certainly taken a few templates from Wikipedia, and a lot of the images I upload come from sources like IMDb. Incidentally, Wikia has approached us in the past about partnering with them. Tar emission

  • You're not doing anything wrong. When an article is moved, it creates a redirect. Once that redirect is edited, the article can't be moved back until the redirect page (or the redirect page that was edited) is deleted. That can only be done by an administrator. So the only way you can move an article over a redirect is if the redirect has not been edited. (At least that's the way I understand it.) However, neither the title "tar emission" nor "oil emission" has consensus. If we don't have consensus on another name, according to our naming conventions, it will have to be "Howie's ability". -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 19:13, 17 March 2009 (EDT)

Holidays

      • For what it's worth, I came up with a holidays and observances template to list the various holidays and observances, but it's just on my user page for now since it wasn't desired for the main page or current events (being deemed unnecessary). I doubt minds will change for the main pages, but if you want to work on adding an opt-in option to change the user infobox colors for holidays (i.e. orange and black for halloween, shades of green for St. Patrick's, red and green for christmas, etc,), that is a possibility my template could allow.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:56, 18 March 2009 (EDT)

Heroes = 2nd?

  • What do I think about Lost? It's hard for me to compare seasons of Lost, just like it's hard for me to compare Lord of the Rings movies. Not only are they all great--even a "bad" episode of Lost is better than most everything else on TV--but really, all the seasons tell one giant story. I can't break it up in my mind. But yes, I am loving this season. I actually woke up this morning a little sad because I didn't have Lost to look forward to tonight. (It didn't help that I'm in withdrawal mode since Lost wasn't on last week, and Heroes wasn't on this week!) :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (new comment) 01:13, 18 March 2009 (EDT)
    • I told someone once that although Heroes and Smallville were my favourite shows, Lost and Supernatural were the best that I watch. Lost is incomparable - intelligent, lots of continuity, etc. Although I may have come on a bit late, nothing else I watch will ever compare to Lost. -- Tristan0709 talk 01:18, 18 March 2009 (EDT)
      • Totally agree. I didn't start watching the first season of Lost until the summer after it aired (I caught it during reruns and then filled in with the DVD after that), and I'm just glad that it aired while I was at an age where I could truly appreciate it.           • Lost is a pretty good show (it's my 2nd), although for seasons 1-3, I was more guy in the room while my grandpa watched emgrosed than fan of any caliber, only getting back into it knowing that there was an end and thanks to the strike. Oddly enough, he dont like the show very much now, with all the time travel and the flashbacks/forwards. Interesting that they got folks off the island last season (after four seasons of that being their quest), only to put most of them back mid this season. And whatchu talking about, Willis?
