Shattering is the ability to make objects explode or "shatter" by pointing at them.
Characters
Confirmed
- Trevor Zeitlan had this ability. (Villains)
- Sylar stole this ability from Trevor (Villains), but lost it after being infected with the Shanti virus (Kindred).
- Pearl possesses this ability. (Purpose)
Unconfirmed
- The unborn child of Francis Culp and Taylor Kravid may possess this ability. (Company Woman)
Limits
Trevor is able to explode glass from at least a few meters away (Villains). The exact mechanism behind the exploding is unknown. He has only been seen to explode glass items; what effect this ability would have on less fragile materials is unknown, although he did seem to think it would make an effective weapon when threatened by Sylar. However, Sylar was wearing glasses at the time, and Trevor's effort may have been to blind him. It's unknown whether it can affect non-solid objects.
To use his ability, Trevor aims at his target with his index finger and "fires" by dropping his thumb like the hammer of a pistol. Trevor apparently needs to make this gesture to use his ability, as he was unable to defend himself when Sylar telekinetically pinned his hands to the wall.
Pearl has shown that she is able to cause many objects to shatter with just a point and "pull" of her hand. By motioning her hand like a gun, Pearl was able to successfully "fire" a sort of invisible bullet that zipped past John Mulligan and destroyed, or shattered, an old sink. She has also shown to be able to shatter several light bulbs.
Like Trevor, Pearl's preferred manifestation of this power is to target with her index finger and fire by dropping her thumb, similar to a pistol or gun. Also like Trevor, Pearl hoped she would be able to harm John Mulligan if she used her ability on him, however, this was not seen as he moved out of her "target range". (Chapter 5 of Purpose)
John claimed that Pearl's power was rare, dangerous, and a wild card.
