Flight is the ability to propel oneself through the air.
Characters
- Nathan Petrelli naturally possesses this ability.
- West naturally possesses this ability.
- Nathan's brother Peter has copied this ability. (Don't Look Back, Unexpected)
- In one possible future, Sylar steals this ability.
Limits
Nathan
Although initially Nathan exhibited little control over his ability, his proficiency has noticeably increased over time, despite there being no evidence that he is actively working to improve his flying ability.
Judging from the effects seen in Hiros, Nathan can apparently fly at supersonic speeds. If this is true, a side-effect of his abilities may include some protection from extremes of temperature and atmospheric pressure as well as the ability to perceive his surroundings while flying at such speeds. This may also explain how he was able to survive Peter's nuclear explosion above New York City. (How to Stop an Exploding Man).
Initially, Nathan was unable to stay aloft while carrying Peter's weight, only stabilizing when Peter mimicked his power (Genesis). At the end of Season One, Nathan appeared to be able to carry Peter's weight while flying without assistance (How to Stop an Exploding Man).
Peter
Peter has independently reproduced this power and easily carried Claude with him while flying (Unexpected).
West
West can carry Claire in flight for extended periods of time. He can apparently fly to altitudes of 30,000 feet or more for at least short periods without serious discomfort. He appears to have practiced extensively at using his power.
Selected Examples
- When Peter attempts to fly on his own, Nathan sees him fall and flies up to catch him. Still apparently a novice at the ability, he is unprepared for the extra weight and initially begins to fall out of control. Peter then mimics his power and helps stabilize them both. (Genesis, Don't Look Back)
- On the second occasion that Peter mimics the flight ability, he is seen to literally "walk on air", levitating at a constant height without effort (shown by the fact that he doesn't even realize he is doing it until Nathan points it out). (Don't Look Back)
- Nathan flies into a burning building to save a trapped woman (Trial By Fire)
- When threatened by The Haitian and Mr. Bennet, Nathan shows the strongest example yet of flight. As outlined above, this seems to show true supersonic flight, as a distinctive boom is heard, a suddenly condensed ring of humidity appears around him, and Nathan essentially disappears from view in an instant. (Hiros)
- Nathan appears to instinctively fly (for what seems to be the first time) when his car is run off the road by Linderman's men. On this occasion, he exhibits no control over his powers, and cannot descend once he has flown above the car. (Six Months Ago)
- Peter has a dream in which he is a superhero who can fly. (Super-Heroics)
- When Mr. Bennet and the Haitian attempt to capture Peter and Claude, Peter throws Claude off the roof and dives after him to escape. Seconds later, Peter flies through the air holding Claude. (Unexpected)
- In 2011, Sylar, while still under the guise of Nathan Petrelli flies away from the explosion memorial in order to confront Peter Petrelli and prevent Hiro from escaping back to 2006. Like Nathan, he also breaks the sound barrier. (Five Years Gone)
- Nathan carries Peter to a high altitude before he explodes, preventing the destruction of New York City. (How to Stop an Exploding Man)
- West hovers outside Claire's bedroom window, before flying away. (Four Months Later)
- West picks Claire up and flys her over Costa Verde. (Kindred)
- West flies Claire to the Hollywood sign. When she jumps off it, he flies down and catches her. (The Kindness of Strangers)
- Claire and West come up with a plan to get even with Debbie. West scoups Claire up from the ground, in front of Debbie's eyes, and then drops her from mid-air. After Debbie sees the bloody and broken body of Claire West flies towards her, chasing her. (The Line)
Memorable Quotes

"Mind if I let you in on a little secret, Charles?"
"You can say anything to me, you know that."
"I can fly."
- - Peter, Charles (Nothing to Hide)
"Hey, you know what? I'm just gonna fly off the terrace, yeah? No? Hey, I can fly. Nathan, so can you."
